Farewell and adieu...

Hi friends! Like you might have noticed I have not been active at all around here lately. I wanted to officially say that I'm taking a break from this blog. I simply can't find my muse right now, and although I love writing with all you lovely people it doesn't feel right to leave you hanging. I can still be reached at @soeven and I'm not deleting this blog. Hopefully I will find my muse again, maybe this summer, maybe in the autumn...

Until then, much love to you all!

The composure of a lifetime of practice falters. Cracks form in the marble of Washington's impenetrable mask. He could take seeing anger and defeat in his men, he could take the sadness of their women, but he cannot take this disappointment in one he would consider a friend. And even though she might not know his feelings or how she has wounded them, as she turns to walk away Washington leaps after, clinging to a last resort. "Ms Strong," his hand brushes ever so lightly against the fabric of her dress, fingers colliding with the sturdiness of her arm, before he remembers himself and pulls it back. "I- understand me correctly. I see that it is a good idea. This is simply not the time for such... Actions."

Unerring eyes spare the General no quarter in their disbelief, nor do they resign themselves to be content in yielding. She had been anticipating validation. However, what she gets is far different. She is met with judgmental silence before being dismissed.

Betrayal warps her features. How much more must she do to prove herself capable and trustworthy? How many more sacrifices must be made before she is considered enough?

Anna's lips press resolutely together to entrap the damning torrent of words she is burning to express but knows she can not. Clenching her jaw until it twitches, the brunette turns to abandon the tent.

Her assured, stormy stance suddenly seizes-up as a hand reaches for her. Sufficiently halted in her evacuation by the unexpected movement, startled orbs flash upwards to hone in on his softer ones. No little confusion etches across her countenance when he actually sees fit to address her personally. Sucking in a breath, she turns to face him. "It--- it is?" Her tremulous voice presses, still steeped in puzzlement.

Her stance softens considerably at the encouragement. "I--- I thought you hated it--" She confesses. "When?" She dares to prod. "When would be a better time? And -- And if I may, how can I help until the time arrives?"

One would have to search far and wide to find someone as resourceful and stubborn as Anna Strong. Of course, the American cause had no shortage of resourceful women, but there was something in the rebel spy that surpassed them. Perhaps it was her history with the cause, perhaps simply her fearlessness drove her further than others would venture. It never ceased to impress the General, and truth be told, he was not entirely sure how to address her ideas.

"Indeed, I think you have found an advantageous point. However, I am unsure of the right time for it." Expression wavers between validation and uncertainty, but carefully avoiding dismissal. He wishes he knew how to direct her fire to use its true potential. Had she been a man, Washington would have put her in charge of a troop. Now, all he can offer is a needle and thread to mend the soldiers' clothes. "Perhaps you could speak to Mrs Washington about this? She has organised the other women in helping the camp." He doesn't say that Martha might know how to better put Anna's ideas in use, but he hopes the two women can speak heart-to-heart in a way he cannot allow himself to.

Lafayette once had departed from the general's office went to lie down. He was quite fatigued from the day's festivities, but in his mind, thoughts of being promoted appeared then disappeared. Would he ever be good enough to show Washington his true love for liberty? Probably not now. The general seemed to not like the idea of being so forward and desperate to fight. Sighing softly, the boy covered himself in a light blanket. Sleep had taken over and those thoughts eventually disappeared into nothing . Flashbacks of his deceased father appeared in one of his dreams.." Kiss my son for me..." a tear ran down his cheek as he fell into a fitful slumber

The General was rushed out of his sleep by urgent voices. A message was conveyed, that made him forget all fatigue and get dressed in haste. “Gather the generals,” he commanded while buttoning his shirt, “And wake Lafayette. We are in need of his strategic mind now.”

At the tactical meeting the air trembled as suggestions bombarded the General. Some were saying they should run, others were arguing to strike now that the army was gathered. There was no shortage of emotion, and soon the generals were bickering between themselves who had the best strategy. Washington listened with a calm demeanour, giving neither side his support, and not looking at anyone in particular. He was waiting for the last person to show up. The boy was no doubt tired from that feast they had organised the previous night. Washington hoped he would still be fit for duty even in this early hour.

Finally, Lafayette showed up, and Washington awarded him with a swift smile. Rising from his chair, the General spoke up, “Gentlemen, now that we are all here, let us inform everyone of the situation and the plan of attack.” The room fell silent. “We have information of the English moving in on our camp. In approximately two hours they will reach us, and by then we must be ready to put up our best fight.” Washington’s gaze fell around the room, “I have heard what all of you have to say, and I believe we should meet them in an open field, they will not expect that.”

“What do you say, Marquis, will you ride out with me?” He said, turning now directly to Lafayette, with an eagerness in his eyes.

Tiny hands touching the shiny buttons of his coat reminded him of little Patsy, his wife's daughter. It warmed his heart that was clenched with sorrow over seeing someone her age in the street. The little girl in front of him looked just like Patsy, a frail wild flower in a field, she could blossom or dry out. Washington could not let the latter happen. He knelt down and wrapped his hands gently around the girl’s shoulders. “Oh, little one, I am sorry about your family.”

As her expressive eyes filled with tears, George found that he was close to crying himself. She was an orphan, poor thing, and with the state of the orphanages around town she would be practically living in the street. “Where do you live? Have they no food there?” he asked calmly, although his insides were burning with discontent -- how could anyone let a child go hungry?

His grey eyes peeled away from the girl for a moment and looked around, searching for a place with food. There was a bakery nearby, with the chimney smoking with baked bread. “Come with me, let us buy you some food.”

He stood up and offered the girl his hand. Then he walked, keeping his strides as short as possible for her to keep up, towards the bakery. The smell of fresh bread filled the air several paces from the door. He got her a wheat bun, glazed with honey, and the size of his palm. It would no doubt be a feast for her. “Here, eat this, you can have the whole thing,” he said, smiling. “Heavens, where are my manners?”, he exclaimed suddenly, “I have not introduced myself. My name is George. What is your name, miss?”

A soft redness crept across Washington's neck, cheeks and ears. The sudden rain of kisses was a welcome surprise, kicking out all other thoughts from the General's mind and sending it spinning. "Dearest, what-" he chuckled as another kiss was warmly planted on his cheek. "You are a sunbeam on a cold spring's day. What have I done to deserve you?" he asked most affectionately and leaned in to kiss Martha's lips.

The young Frenchman smiled when he saw that Washington was not angry at him for declining the offer. “ I would rather try mon tactics 'ere in front of 'ou Général instead of being some miles away in a strange land I know nothing of.”

A tired yawn suddenly swept over the teenage boy and he covered his mouth. He knew when that happened it was time for rest.“ If 'ou will permit it, I would rather be under 'our command then anyone else Père. I- I mean..” It had slipped out. Feeling embarrassed, Lafayette immediately apologized for the mistake. “ I meant Général. ”

His face reddened with embarrassment, as fatigue had decided to take his tall muscular athletic built body. The clock struck midnight, making a small ding which meant that it was time to sleep. “ I will be ready at a moment’s notice.” Giving a tired salute and a nod of 'Goodnight ’ to the commander in chief.

“Of course,” Washington said softly, a smile fluttering on his lips like candlelight. He could understand Lafayette’s decision, and truthfully he was happy to have him remain by his side. The only thing troubling him was that Lafayette might be disappointed if he was not promoted after all the things he had done for the American cause. The boy would have to decide for himself what he valued highest - the proximity to power or power itself.

Father. The slip of Lafayette’s tongue was not lost on Washington. The General chuckled lightly, eyes glowing with amusement at the tired boy, but he did not reply. His throat had tightened at hearing the word, and despite his cheerful demeanor, he felt a pang of sorrow. He silently watched his aide de camp leave the room. Was he cursed to send all his sons to fight his battle? They were not his sons by birth but by choice, they had joined his closest ranks and would go where he ordered. He loved them as though they were his own blood, and he feared most of all that he would lose them to the war.

It took a moment before Washington gathered his thoughts and left the office. The conversation between him and Lafayette echoed in his mind as he fell asleep.
