Listen it's so funny because Sasuke has an innate and objective sense of goodness and kindness, it's just that he cannot indulge it when his own circumstances are so unjust and require so much of his attention. During his team 7 days we see no overt declarations of love and support, but we see over and over the little details of care. He got worried when Naruto didn't eat, when Sakura was feeling insecure, and he went and did something about it. During his Orochimaru days he acts cold and aloof, but won't kill anyone he fights in training despite his stated goal being he'd do anything for power. He has a very clear moral compass, he just can't consciously examine it or declare it because it gets in the way of his ambition to avenge his family.
Meanwhile Naruto? Needs to be taught his ideals. Over and over again we see him struggle with himself. Haku taught him the idea of "precious people," Sasuke taught him sacrifice when he wanted to run against Gaara (honestly kind of a bad thing but not for this post). Naruto sneers and derides the villains he fights and then needs to connect their strife with his own to care, to extend his empathy. He has to learn to care.
Sasuke just....does.
And it's so funny because for Sasuke it holds him back! If he didn't have this moral compass he could do so much more! In fact, his ambition to kill Naruto was supposed to be a symbolic end to his morality, which is why he pursued it so much, but when push came to shove he just simply couldn't go through with it; his morality innate.
Meanwhile Naruto's morality is so tied to Sasuke that to see him die would feel like a moral failure, and that's why he goes so hard for him! He's Naruto's moral center: he discovered his beliefs through Sasuke. He just simply cannot believe Sasuke is evil and irredeemable because so much of his own sense of righteousness is built on what he learned through Sasuke.
Sasuke's sense of morality is innate to him and it gets in his way, while Naruto's sense of morality is learned through Sasuke and is what gets in the way of writing off Sasuke as a bad person (like everyone else does).
when naruto asked, “can you kill me calmly, sasuke?”,
he got his answer at their final fight: no, sasuke cannot.
love stored in the
Sasuke: Crushes are the worst.
Naruto: Right. Whenever I’m near someone I have a crush on, I start acting stupid.
Sasuke: You’re always acting stupid.
Naruto: Yeah… don’t think about that too hard.
Naruto, on the second day of the academy:
I’ve only had Sasuke for a day and a half, but if anything happened to him, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.
remember when sasuke destroyed naruto with a single sentence? iconic™
Truth was, I just wanted to be like you. You were my idol.
we don't talk enough about how baby sasuke portrayed what it was like to be a mentally ill toddler, like he was 7 and murderous, suicidal, literally going insane from anger, hated the government, and was honestly kind of a little shit,,, he was so iconic. who's doing it like 7 year old sasuke? nobody, exactly
leaving this off my main blog, but i'm thinking about that flashback naruto had of him and baby sasuke sparring at the academy, and even baby naruto was like holy shit this guy is mentally ill. i'm ctfu, how insane do you have to be to freak out naruto "i vandalized a hypernationalist military state's monument in broad daylight for attention <3" uzumaki
how quickly would we all end up in prison for arson talking about sasuke if all sasuke URLs had a party in the same building
a lot of people consider naruto and sasuke's relationship one-sided on naruto's part, which i can maybe see how you get that from a very surface evel reading. naruto is obviously much more vocal about his feelings and wears his heart on his sleeve, so it might appear like he's chasing after someone who doesn't care about him. but sasuke doesn't express his emotions in the same way naruto does. he appears to be a very subdued individual, but it's clear that he feels very deeply, especially about naruto. the entire crux of the conflict in their relationship centers around the fact that sasuke does care for naruto, and he can't deal with that fact. he wants to be alone, and naruto gets in the way of that because he, in sasuke's words, is his one and only friend. if sasuke didn't care about naruto just as much as naruto did for him, hw wouldn't consider him worth cutting off
Naruto’s panic attack after learning that Sasuke will be killed
