Cobb reservoir dam
That was our first view of the man-made reservoir lake. Further down it supplies a hydropowerstation (owesome stuff, dude)
We’will spend four days in this area to recover from the exhausting Abel Tasman Great Walk. Just kidding, we need to take some time away from german backpackers. Enjoying the solitude

Day 4
This day, the sky was as grey as these pictures. After a more or less uneventful walk with views over some more bays and a pretty wet lunch break with drizzling rain we were finally glad to finish our first Great Walk! Got some ice cream as a treat day sort of thing.
Abel Tasman
Day 3
Again quite fine weather and an enjoyable afternoon stay at Cleopatra’s pool. Just a bit crowded....of course. But beautifully clear waters. Simon the little fishy underwater. A long finned eel stopped by to say hello. And last but not least: Smoked mussels for dinner. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Abel Tasman
Day 2
Great weather indeed. Amazing views, hiking through lush forests and we even got a gourmet dinner, - thanks to low tide and the fact that mussels do not run away when you go for them. Our second mussel meal, after yesterday’s mussel dinner. Go for the proteins! And the taste.
Abel Tasman
Day 2
As the Abel Tasman coastal region is known for its tidal range of up to 6m we had to go up at 4:00 am in the morning to make the tidal crossing in time. Hiking in the dark, finding your way in shallow waters through fields of mussels without hiking boots....what a fun. But we got well rewarded with another day of perfect weather.
Abel Tasman Great Walk
Day I
After our late start (just after 1pm) we still had a section of 24km ahead. Nevertheless it was a perfect start: Perfect weather, empty beaches .... hiking through paradise. Simon was so excited he literally climbed a tree, - with his 20kg backback.
Takaka
Last ‘real’ lunch before starting our 2nd multiple day hike at lovely dangerous kitchen.
JANUARY 2017 - 4 days of hiking in the Abel Tasman National Park
Cooking time
After scrubbing the mussels clean, which took quite a while, we were ready to prepare this delicious dinner: Roasted Kumaras (Sweetpotatos) and Mussels in white wine sauce. Enjoy! (Last dinner before our next great adventure: Our first great walk, 4 days in the Abel Tasman National Park)
Kaiteriteri
Spending a lovely day at Dummy Bay (Kaiteriteri) on the Abel Tasman Coast. We even found our dinner here: Delicious green lipped Mussels!
Nelson Checking out the sunniest city of NZ on a not so sunny day. Simon is busy pitching projects, while I am playing with the GoPro Capture App. “Smile!”
Say hello to this big insect
A cicada (maori: Kihikihi) claims my wool sock. Nice pattern on this interesting insect, but you don’t want them to sing. It is deafening.
You have to see them on a rainy day!
We reached the highest point on the track. Still, we couldn’t see Berlin
An amazed Leandra - Nature is a wonder ¹
¹ Actually, Simon had the camera, asking me to pose for a picture: “Make a funny face.”²
² Nevertheless, she was amazed by that crack³
³ Damn, you got me!
