Round 1: Always In My Heart

To set the scene, Louis was first seen with Eleanor in pap pics from Niall’s birthday party in 2011 that were released on Sep 14. Several weeks later, pap pics of Louis and Eleanor at a park in London on Sep 30 came out the following day. This is why the fandom was aware of Eleanor, but Louis had made no mention of her up to that point.

Round 2: Always You

Elounor 1.0 was reported to be over on Mar 22, 2015. A little less than 2 years later, Louis and Eleanor started following each other on social media again, there was some Instagram interaction around a similar hoodie that Eleanor and Louis wore on Feb 16, and news of them hanging out in LA on Feb 13 was released belatedly by fans on Feb 24. These things, along with Louis posting 2 unusual selfies of his feet on Feb 18 and 19, were taken by fans as signs that Elounor 2.0 was likely on its way.

Louis posts “Always” on Twitter which has no particular meaning as a word on its own and immediately brings to mind his AIMH tweet because of its popularity in the fandom (the 2nd most retweeted post ever).

Only minutes later, he follows up with a black and white selfie (both black and white pics and sad selfies already being signs Louis uses to mark things that aren’t as they seem on the surface), and the word “You” which has little meaning on its own until you add it to the “Always” Tweet.

daisy buchanan: the original manic pixie dream girl

if you think you aren’t familiar with the manic pixie dream girl (MPDG), you’re wrong. you’ve seen her, written and rewritten in almost every movie or tv show you see. she’s taken over entertainment, being perpetuated by all those lonely, bitter men who had a falling out with their MPDG.

a manic pixie dream girl is that female character who is very cute, “unique”, likable (before closer examination), and serves as a woman for the male protagonist to project his fantasies on to. she has no real substance, and she only exists to change the life of the hero. her only impact is through the love life of the male character.

if you’re familiar with “the great gatsby”, you know the character daisy buchanan. and here we have a classic, manic pixie dream girl. this literary classic is often referred to the great american novel. Frances Scott Fitzgerald is said to have written the character after his own past flame, the same way many authors get the inspiration for the MPDG character.

Daisy is a beautiful flapper girl who comes from money and married money in the form of Tom Buchanan. The marriage is not faithful, but lasts due to similar interests. Daisy knew Gatsby as a young girl, and the two fell in love, of course, until Gatsby had to leave to fight the war, and Daisy got tired of waiting.

your first impression of Daisy is, delighted. she is beautiful and exquisite and you can’t resist her charm. but the more you get to know her, you realize there is no substance. Her feelings are seen as minor details in the grand scheme of things, and for the most part, she is just a lost, shallow girl who will never grow past her naive youthfulness. it is as if she is perpetually stuck in the mind frame of a 19 year old.

You conclude Daisy is just a mystery, and that adds to her allure, but if you really think about it, try to dig deep, it’s like digging in wet sand, it just caves in and never goes further than a couple inches. There’s nothing there; there is no substance to her character. she is only a spoiled little girl who relies on men to make an impact at all. Daisy is only an obstacle, a challenge for Gatsby, which he ultimately fails. Daisy is a conflict in the form of a character, she is a problem, not a person.

In the end, that’s all the manic pixie dream girl ever is; a conflict. She isn’t seen as a person, she’s seen as a problem. That’s how our entertainment portrays the vast majority of female characters; problems. and if thats how we see our population of female characters, how do we see our population of real females?

Marianne Doesn’t Actually Change that Much

I think some part of the problem people have with Marianne/Brandon, or even just Sense & Sensibility, is that Marianne supposedly has an unrealistic personality transplant after a life threatening illness. While I think the experience matured Marianne, it did not alter her “in essentials” as you might say.

Marianne suggests that instead of chasing after boys/being dramatic, she will wake up at 6am and spend her whole day in improving reading etc. Now these people went to bed quite late, so this plan is entirely passionate and unrealistic, or to put it another way, very Marianne. Something Elinor laughs about internally.

The scene at the Netherfield Ball with Caroline Bingley is very interesting to me because I think Elizabeth Bennet, by saying that Darcy was behind it, entirely misinterprets what’s happening. We also know that what Caroline says is entirely true (this is the important part in between the snobbery): Let me recommend you, however, as a friend, not to give implicit confidence to all his assertions; for as to Mr. Darcy’s using him ill, it is perfectly false; for, on the contrary, he has always been remarkably kind to him, though George Wickham has treated Mr. Darcy in a most infamous manner. In my opinion, there are three possible explanations for why she did this, and two of them are praiseworthy:

She was trying to protect Darcy from slander (Good)

Caroline knew her brother was interested in Jane and was trying to keep the Bennet family from getting worse

Caroline was surprised by how much Darcy hated Wickham and decided to tell Lizzy about it, despite it being against Caroline’s interests. Rgency girl code! Added bonus that it might shame Lizzy (still a good deed)

It makes absolutely no sense for Caroline to tell Lizzy just to make fun of her, Caroline is smart enough to know that the best way to get rid of a rival is for them to be into someone else. It’s even better in this case for Lizzy to like Wickham because Darcy hates him. And she has ample other things to make fun of Lizzy about! Her family is making an absolute embarrassment of themselves all over the ball.

I think the real point of this scene is to show how people disregard information if it comes from a source they dislike. Lizzy falls for Wickham’s charming flattery, but she dislikes Caroline’s haughty sneer and therefore totally ignores the truth.
