-Contributed by Charu Dhasmana
Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy and live a full life. But for many families in India, having a child diagnosed with a serious condition like a congenital heart defect (CHD) can be overwhelming. The emotional stress, the social pressure, and above all, the financial burden can feel too heavy to carry alone. That’s where a foundations working for children step in — becoming a source of hope and support when they are needed the most.
What is a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD)?
In simple words, a congenital heart defect is a hole in the heart. These defects are of different types and vary in severity from mild to complex. One of the common methods for treating heart defects is open heart surgery. But with the advancement in technology, doctors are now able to provide non-surgical heart treatments to the patients. These are non-invasive procedures performed in the Cath Lab. For many families, access to these treatments remains out of reach as the average cost of such treatments lies in the range of Rs. 2,00,000- 4,00,000. That is where foundations working for children across the country are stepping up to change this reality.
A Children’s Healthcare Foundation Giving Hope to Young Lives
Genesis Foundation, a children’s healthcare foundation working for children who are diagnosed with a congenital heart defect (CHD). They provide financial resources for heart treatment for underprivileged children under 18 years of age and for families with a monthly income under Rs 20,000. Over the last 24 years, they have supported over 5,000 children, giving them a chance at life. One of the most unique aspects of Genesis Foundation is that 100% of individual donations go directly towards a child’s treatment, with zero allocation towards administrative costs.
How is Genesis Foundation Transforming Young Lives?
Genesis Foundation creates real social impact by ensuring that their support makes a difference in the lives of young children. A successful heart surgery or procedure means a child can run, play, and dream without the limitations of illness. It means a child can live a normal life like any other child. Given below are some of the stories of kids supported by Genesis Foundation that are living proof of how medical care, when made accessible, can truly transform young lives.
Harsh (name changed), a two-year-old boy was diagnosed with a serious heart defect, Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). He required urgent heart treatment. For his parents, the cost seemed out of reach. With the help of their generous donors, Genesis Foundation was able to provide life-saving treatment to Harsh. Today, he is healthy, active, and medication-free, full of energy and smiles.
Genesis Foundation supported an open-heart surgery for the 8-year-old Kasturi (name changed) in FY 2021-22. As a part of their work process, this children’s healthcare foundation conducts impact assessments of the children they support for three years after the treatment provided. As per her latest impact assessment in FY 2024-25, Kasturi is thriving and is now studying in the 7th grade. She dreams of becoming a doctor one day.
A ventricular septal defect survivor, Vaanika (name changed) was operated on when she was thirteen years old. She had regular complaints of breathlessness during any form of activity which went away after intervention. Vaanika kept up with her follow-ups and went ahead to pursue a B.A. (Hons) from S.O.L Delhi University. As of today, she has started her own organization and teaches lesser privileged children.
Kartik (name changed), a one-year-old boy is the only child to his parents who hardly make Rs 6,000 per month. The baby was evaluated and diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with Absent Pulmonary Valve and was advised total correction. With generous support extended by one of Genesis Foundation’s CSR donors, Kartik underwent successful heart surgery. Post recovery, Kartik is a healthy and very naughty boy as says his mother. But he is the apple of his parents’ eyes, and they are very grateful to the children’s heart foundation.
