In simple words, a hole in the heart is a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). These defects are of different types and vary in severity from mild to complex. It is one of the most common birth defects in India, affecting a staggering 200,000 births per year. This article aims to explain briefly the causes, common symptoms, and treatment options for various congenital heart defects in children. 

What causes CHD?

The human heart begins its steady, rhythmic beat just weeks after conception, maintaining circulation to the vital organs in our body. The development of the heart occurs through a series of convoluted steps, a phase so crucial that even a small mishap can lead to long term complications in the baby.

Hence, it is fair to say that CHD primarily arise from any insult to the development of the embryo, which may be genetic, environmental or a mix of both. For instance, babies having genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, Turner syndrome or DiGeorge syndrome are more likely to have heart defects at birth.

Bringing a child into the world is a huge milestone in any human’s life. It is a time to celebrate and cherish. However, learning that your newborn baby has congenital heart disease (CHD) can bring this joy to a sudden halt. This takes an immense emotional toll on parents.

Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, uncertainty, and unawareness are the emotions/feelings described by parents taking care of their child, post cardiac surgery. After the diagnosis and exhausting experience of surgery, parents are expected to be caregivers immediately. In such sensitive times, parents are usually left to fend for themselves. The pain of watching your newborn undergo surgery is indescribable. It is a rollercoaster of emotions. One experiences joy, that the child has survived the surgery, but also anxiety and confusion about the future. Their emotional journey post-surgery is a sinusoidal wave, full of ups and downs. Happiness and hope are often accompanied by fear and despair.

During hospital stays, parents feel supported by medical staff, but this support often fades once they return home. Post-operative care is a tricky situation as parents are in a constant state of worry. A sense of waiting and watching for something to happen. The worry of an emergency that could happen at any time. Parents feel insecure about their parenting and are in a constant loop of second-guessing, if they are doing enough, or if they are doing it right.

The baby was evaluated and diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with Absent Pulmonary Valve and was advised total correction.
