Today We Start a Worm Factory 360
We have been working with a homemade worm condo for quite sometime. We are certainly not unhappy with the solution as the worms breed and it's working as we'd hope. Today we decided to start working with a commercial product from Nature's Footprint. We have to admit, the folks at Nature's Footprint have a pretty polished product that can sit in your kitchen. There's great documentation to get started and the setup is easy. Let's see how it compares to our home-brew to the commercial product. So far...I do like the commercial design.
Taking an hour out of the day, you can get this up and running easily. Then, perhaps a few minutes a week you will be feeding your waste into another ecosystem that will benefit the big picture of your urban garden.
Life always seems to find a way
Today I was doing some work on one of the media beds and decided to replace and upgrade to a larger bed. I also decided to take a look at the sump tanks. Seems the fish has been a little busy... we found a few tilapia and a few goldfish hanging out. Nice little surprises.

Water resource question
Repost: February 2, 2015 by Isabelle Roetcisoender at 4:16 PM in Opinions
Today, I asked kids around my school how much water was left in the world. None of them could answer me. I was greeted with confused looks and raised eyebrows. My best friend, Laura, asked me why I didn’t look it up. The reason why I didn’t look it up was because I already knew. I wasn’t asking for me, I was asking for them.
Now, if you’re curious, I’ll give you the answer. There’s only 0.036% of drinkable water left on this earth ("Human Appropriation"). In website articles you choose to look up, they’ll pass it off like it’s not a big deal. “Oh, there are still tons of lakes and rivers that make up this percentage. We won’t be running out anytime soon.” However, water is a limited resource, yet we flush it down our toilets as if it were worthless.
How can America be known as the most forward country when children in Silicon Valley don’t even know the state of our current world? Unlike past experiences in history, this is a situation we will not be able to come out of. There is no rebound. That’s why we have to start acting now before it’s too late and the first step is spreading awareness.

Local Harvesting
Repost: January 12, 2015 by Liz Kim at 10:04 AM in General
The other day while sitting in my backyard watching my girls' antics and laughing at them, I noticed that many and I mean almost every one had fruit trees in their backyards. Many of these fruit trees had so much fruit on them, they were falling off the trees and rotting!!!! We have an orange tree and are still waiting for them to ripen (strange) and then I saw the most awesome persimmon tree. It was stripped of all leaves and only the fruit hung like the most beautiful ornaments only Mother Nature can provide. They were not being eaten (I knew because I know the couple who lives there and they admitted they didn't like the fruit - at least he composts it).
I started noticing more and more of these types of trees in my neighborhood. I had to do something about it. I knew if I knocked on my neighbor's doors, they would have absolutely no problem sharing their bounty with those who had none. i contacted Local Harvest and they have an organization already in plan!!!! I'm doing this for sure!!!
I hope you get to take a look around and sometimes you may not even know it is edible (like stinging nettles - high in vitamins once cooked a little) and be able to provide fresh food to people in need while making sure nothing goes to waste. What can be better than that?!!!!
WWOOFERS-USA: Our Experience
Repost: January 11, 2015 by Liz Kim at 10:42 PM in General
We are new to being a part of the WWOOFER-USA Association. We decided with my tennis elbow (I don't even play tennis!), Jason and I needed someone to help us with some projects.
Our request for a Wwoofer was answered by Paul. He was amazing. He is a young man who wants to improve the world and make people happy. He had never left his home town and was raised with limited outside influences such as television and internet.
He was a breath of fresh air. His excitement over Thai food, Indian food and all the diversity blew his mind. It made me see what a wonderful place we live in. I've been to parts of this country who have never seen an Asian person before (yes-I know) and I haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg in seeing all the states known as the great country the United States of America.
Paul gave us much more than just helping us on our projects, it made us stop to appreciate where we live, the community we live in and what a wonderful place this is.
I guess sometimes it takes someone special too come into your life and show you something that is right under your nose. Hmmmm...love life want more experiences as isn't that what this is all about?
Update With Our Farm and Thoughts
Repost: January 9, 2015 by Liz Kim at 6:38 AM in General
We have learned so much in 2014! What a year full of opportunities and incredible experiences. With our meetup group, we've met the the most wonderful people to share and learn together. We thank everyone, the speakers, the group, our family, friends, and neighbors for helping us achieve so much!
Our aquaponic units are going fantastic!! We have managed to not kill one fish, our backyard is producing enough greens to feed us and to share with neighbors and family. Now we are at the point we can feed three families out of our small tiny backyard. We are really growing out of room and need more space!!!!
We have been so fortunate I cannot thank the Powers That Be enough for the abundance of knowledge and love we have received in 2014. We hope it continues in 2015.
Our chickens are still laying full force even though it is winter and we do not provide artificial lighting. We have four hens, Ethel, Oko, Lucy and Monroe and they are still pumping out four eggs a day!!!! I love seeing them everyday and they bring so much joy!! I consider them my girls and they provide hours and hours of entertainment for us. They also teach us so much by us just watching them run around the yard.
The fish in our units have grown incredibly large!! They too are very funny and provide entertainment. In the morning when I get up to check them they are all looking up at me with eyes that say "feed us!!!" and I love the joy of feeding them and having them jump around for the food.
We have not set any New Years Resolutions except to keep learning, practicing, and improving our lives so we can be healthier and share that same knowledge so we can all live happy healthy lives.
We would like to move to a location where we have more space to do more seminars and teach more classes and do more meetups. I would love to take our meetup group on a special farm tour at a commerical aquaponic farm.
I've been up since 4:00 and giving a lot of thought and reflection on our journey since we've started and we've come such a long way but it wasn't overnight. It did take time, dedication, and hard work. I look to others for inspiration and boy there are so many out there!
We hope to leave something behind when we leave this earth to continue our journey so the future of our children and generations will have a start on alternative healthy and happy lives. If we can do it for one person, we consider it a success.
Well, those are my thoughts and have never been so content about it in my life. I hope everyone will have or already has this feeling.
Holiday Season
Repost: December 21, 2014 by Liz Kim at 6:03 AM in General
During this holiday season I see so many good things. People are all donating, giving, pitching in so everyone and I mean I hope everyone gets a good holiday season. It's rare to get everything you want or give everything you want to give but knowing that we are all part of a group to improve the earth and in the end help people around the globe is a priceless gift which we are all doing.
It's also time to look forward to 2015 and think about other ways to improve our world. I am excited to hear and learn from everyone and that includes each and every one of you so we can experiment or improve what we know so we can share our experiences and knowledge and hopefully spread the word.
What better gift than the gift of knowledge and knowing that people care and in loving the earth we are loving everyone. This is the real spirit of the holidays.
Thank you to each and every one of you who have shown an interest, come to the meet ups, joined our group, and the conversations on our site just to keep the juices flowing. You are Genesis Clock Farm's present. We believe this is the best gift we have ever received. Thank you again.
Pressing the Self Destruct Button: Humanity versus Humanity by Isabelle Roetcisoender
Repost: December 12, 2014 by Isabelle Roetcisoender at 9:34 AM in Opinions
Have you ever been told you're overweight? Have you ever been told it's all your fault? Have you ever been told you should be eating healthier and you should be exercising more? Your weight is your problem and you have to learn to deal with it on your own! Do those words sound familiar?
In a recent documentary I watched alongside my mother (Fed Up), it turns out, none of it is your fault. The media likes to blame victims for many things…and obesity is one of them. However, obesity is becoming a widespread epidemic, and no matter what our doctors tell us, it's like we're just not getting better. So whom do we point our fingers at? Well, when we start delving into more research, the answer becomes easy. I think we all know it deep down, but never bothered to look because it just tastes so good. The answers to the ones responsible are available if you look at grocery stores, street corners, malls, and more. So who is it? You guessed it! It's the big, mean, food machines! Coca cola, McDonalds, Burger King, and even Kellogs are all part of the cause of the epidemic. If you were to turn on the television, I bet you wouldn't be able to see one commercial that does not feature unhealthy food from one or more of these companies. All these advertisements are colorfully displayed and posted wherever we look. The prices are cheaper than healthy foods, the stuff is engineered so it's easy to get addicted to, and eating is a must for everyone.
So the question we must ask those industries and ourselves is how it's our faults. How is it our faults when our addictions are waved in front of us constantly? How is it our faults to be unhealthy when we are only given once choice? How is it our faults when we have to dig for the truth?
