He holds his hands up, a gesture of mock surrender, he knows that he was caught in his general statement. She has a point, but he also knows that not many people would actively research and seek out alternative sources of caffeine. “You got me there.” He chuckles lightly.

“If not a mental thing, then what else? Are you referring to the physical affect caffeine has on us?” The inquiry is partially out of curiosity, because he genuinely doesn’t know what she was referring to.

“Yes, I am. Caffeine is an addictive substance and the body will go through withdrawals if you tapered your intake or drastically changed it.” Though, that could be said for many things, and why moderation was always spoken of.

“For example, if I skip a cup of coffee for a day or two I’ll feel off and can even get a headache.” For the most part, Genesis was fairly careful, but coffee would be the one vice she’d allow herself.

JOSHI, RONAV.

For a moment, his eyes looked anywhere but directly into hers. Their arrangement hadn’t needed that type of information, but Ronav didn’t expect her to call him out right then and there, though, he did enjoy her sharp tongue– literally and figuratively. “You got me there!” he chuckled, “So I guess I should ask, what’s your favorite flower, Genesis?” Paired with a shrug at her next question, he added, “I mean, I won’t tell you it’s for that, but I don’t think it’d be polite to go to a concerto empty-handed.”

Ronav allowed the contact to cease, though his mocha hues refocused on her. “Food is always good,” he agreed. It was a neutral meeting ground, and if things became awkward there was always the solace of drinking water to gather one’s thoughts. “La Bibimerie is around here, if Korean food sounds good to you. If you hate it…,” he shrugged, “it’s on me. Does that work for you?”

Truthfully, Genesis hadn’t been entirely sure how or why their arrangement had been so cold. To the point where they made no effort in getting to know each other at all. A smile curved her lips and she thought about it for a moment. “Magnolia’s are my favorite. What are yours?” Ronav was difficult to read, he inquired and asked questions yet his body language gave off disinterest. It made the brunette unsure how to respond. “You’re attending to listen to music, you’re not obligated to bring anything.”

With a nod, she agreed and thought a change would be good. It’d been some time since she enjoyed Korean cuisine, and Gen appreciated the mix up. “That works for me. I wouldn’t hate it, I’ve loved it the times that I’ve tried it. Plus, they’re good with spicy.” And the pianist loved food with some flavor and heat. “Shall we go?” Gesturing to the door, she smiled once more.

He gives her an awkward smile, still trying to recover from what just happened. He knows that he shouldn’t be so hard on himself, but it ended up costing this woman a few minutes and him a few euros. If he had been paying attention neither of them would have had their time or money wasted.

He makes a sound of assent at her words, they’re very much true. “Yeah, it does cause us to rely on it. But, given the boost of energy caffeine gives our bodies, I’m not sure we’d be able to do without it even with rest.” With his words, he takes a sip of his latte. “It creates pathways in our brain and becomes a chemical dependency, more than just a mental thing.”

Considering his words for a minute, she sipped her fresh drink and let her head bob in a slow nod. “Maybe, but there are better alternatives than getting the boost out of coffee.” But, given that she didn’t want to come across as some health nut, because she wasn’t, Gen didn’t add on about the natural caffeine one could add to their water.

“Yeah ---” A slight chuckle. “Wasn’t thinking it was a mental thing.” Lifting her drink to him, she tipped her head slightly. “Thank you for the fresh drink. Hope the days gets moving for you with the boost.”

Beyond yoga, beyond what anybody could’ve ever imagined Keziah finding pure moments of joy in — the symphony had always called to her; and when she came to Paris, regardless of the time, she would always find a way to attend a concert. Watching the nimble fingers of musicians move along their instrument, performing a wondrous melody for the crowd, and the night before, she found herself in complete and utter reverence of a stunning pianist. She had never been the type of person to wait outside the stage door, hoping to catch a glimpse of her favorite artist — but something about Genesis drew her in, wholly captivated her, and she couldn’t help herself.

That singular decision to do something different lead to this moment: watching the last of her final class for the day usher their way from the studio, leaving Keziah alone with the woman she’d watched only the night before, perform. In all honesty, she held little expectation that the brunette would show — in fact, she thought she was kidding herself, any speck of hope was foolish. And yet, she was proven wrong, and my God, was she grateful for that. The dimly lit studio felt charged somehow, and she tugged at the strap of her sports bra, making a timid approach towards Genesis. Darkened hues of brown lingering on her face, “I hope I didn’t work you too hard,” she started, darting her tongue over her bottom lip in a rush, “Though… I admit, I didn’t think you could stretch like that. I’m impressed.” In fact, she was more than impressed.

Meeting Keziah Emem the night before following her show, the brunette found herself captivated and drawn in by beauty and grace. The conversation might have come across as nervous, perhaps a little awkward, but the yoga instructor was so stunning that Genesis bright green hues could only stare. Somehow they’d gotten around to an exchange of information, and it was perhaps the softness of Keziah’s skin in her hand that made it a challenge to remember any words --- but it suddenly didn’t matter what was on her planner for the next day, she’d clear it to see this woman show off her flexibility. It seemed salacious, yet when she was home later that night Gen found her best pair of yoga pants and top.

Of course, the brunette hung in the back of the studio so she could peep and admire Keziah as she led the full class through stretches and poses. The instructor was long legged and limber and at least as a student her eyes could linger on the slender figure without consequence. From the moment their eyes had caught the night before there was a current between them and Genesis could feel her heart pounding, blood pulsing and it wasn’t due to being put to the test with the session. The pianist was fit, enjoyed dancing almost as much as walking and was grateful that was enough to get her through the class. As people began departing following the end, she pressed the hand towel she’d brought to her face and neck --- watching Keziah the whole time as she said her goodbyes and eventually made her way to stand in front of her. “No,” her Zapopan accent ever present, “it was a breeze. You were nice and gentle for my first time.” Mossy green hues followed the movement of Keziah’s tongue across her lip and Gen’s chest visibly rose as she took in a breath. “I suppose dancing all these years has done me well.” With her gaze moving slowly down her figure then coming back up, she wet her own lips. “Do you have somewhere to be, somewhere you’ve got to run off now?”

JOSHI, RONAV.

Tongue peeked through his teeth as he accepted their newfound position of hand holding. It still felt nice, this familiar intimacy with her, and it may have been the past talking but he thought about falling back into their old habit. “I don’t believe I’ve been,” he said, “maybe when I was younger, but nothing in my memory is standing out. Which…you’ll have to remind me about your favorite flower,” Ronav suggested.

With a playful roll of his eyes, Ronav brought her hand up to his lips, gently pressing them against her knuckles. So they weren’t done with each other. “Of course,” he murmured, nuzzling his head against her hand. Ronav had every intention of reaching out to her– her affection had always been a good thing in his mind. “I suppose my real question, however,” he could feel his face burning, though he continued to gaze upon her. “would be if you wanted to continue this reunion somewhere more private, or if you wanted to wait for me to reach out to you?”

“Remind you?” Brow quirked, the simper on her lips conveyed the chiding she was on the verge of sending his way. All in jest, still, Genesis couldn’t resist an opportune moment. “I don’t recall you asking in the first place.” Not a whole lot of talking had taken place between them, hence why he was still a stranger in so many ways. The brunette loosened her fingers, having caught his discomfort. “Please don’t tell me it’s so you can bring flowers to the show ---” It wasn’t that she minded, as that did happen a lot, Gen was perhaps a little surprised.

Pale green settled on Ronav, watching his affections mirror a cat in the way he rubbed his head against her hand. It put a smile on her lips, but she had to pull her hand away to reach for her phone in her pocket. Since the left was staying protected in her pocket. With what he proposed and the way his cheeks turned him into a tomato, Gen could only assume that he wasn’t asking her to just hangout. “Well ---” It felt awkward to just jump right back into bed after so much absence and lack of contact. “Are you hungry? I’ve got some free time and I’m starving.”

JOSHI, RONAV.

“You haven’t done anything,” his voice was quiet as he reached out to grab her wrist as he had done many times before. “I wasn’t aware that I missed you after we went our separate ways and when I saw you through the glass,” Ronav’s eyes were soft and slightly sad. “When we…split,” he licked his lips, choosing his words delicately. “I didn’t think you’d be back.” History would show that people didn’t come back in Ronav’s life– granted, that was because they were either dead or dealing with grief in their own way. “I was just taken aback. But I am happy to see you. Truly.”

She was living in the city? For…years? How oblivious could he be? He tried to rack his mind to recall if he heard anything about her from anyone, but after speaking to so many customers in a day, all the conversations tended to sound the same. “That’s amazing, Gen! Would it be weird if I came to a performance?” He grazed over her hand as a smile began to spread across his face. She came back.

“I do,” he looked away for a moment, blushing. Her name had the honor of having the pillow emoji next to it, something he couldn’t delete. There had been multiple nights where Ronav hovered over her name, unable to commit to sending a simple ‘hey’ because of the nature of their relationship. “Do you still have mine?” he asked, curiously.

The touch was cause for Gen to pull in a breath. Contact hadn’t been expected but the pianist's lips curved when she looked down at familiar fingers around her wrist. As the brunette listened to his explanation, she found it made sense and that eased the tension she was feeling. More relaxed, those green hues of hers lifted to that soulful brown she’d stared into many memorable times. “When we split I thought you didn’t want to see me again.” At least that was what had been assumed of the arrangement, and that Ronav had carried on when he’d no longer needed the connection. “So, I didn’t reach out. It’s nice though, that you’re happy to see me.”

Seeing the smile stretch across his lips comforted Genesis even further, and a faint dusting of pink warmed her cheeks over his interest in possibly seeing her play. The brunette slowly turned her right hand in his gentle grasp so that she could move her fingers over his skin, instead she’d hooked their fingers together. That left she was so protective stayed in her pocket. “It wouldn’t be weird at all. I’d love it if you came. Have you ever been to a concerto before?” Unlike most, Gen played her own music.

The immediate smile and giddiness she felt compelled her eyes to fall on the space between them, hiding the reaction as best as she could at learning he still had her number in his phone. Maybe that meant nothing, but she chose not to think of the negatives. “I do,” she squeezed his fingers a little, “but I’d prefer you to reach out.” Not for any games, this was her way of confirming his intent was real and not just because of suddenly and surprisingly finding themselves in each other’s presence. The last thing she wanted was something out of obligation.

STARTER: @genesisdelrazo LOCATION: Genesis’ home, evening

It had been a while since they had both seen each other. Tiago had barely recognised the girl - or woman rather - when they had bumped into each other last week. The striking colour of her eyes was as distinctive as always and the reason he could place her. Genesis had been the younger sister of an old friend, someone he had always considered affectionately, but now she was older and time had made them distant. Of course, he still cared for her, their families having been too close not to and memories of summers together growing up. However, he had spent a decade away from that and a lot had changed, for both of them.

The ease of their reunion did prove that life friendships could stand the test of time, but the news of her injury that he had discovered accidentally whilst at work, also proved that that distance and her maturity also led to secrecy. Tiago could recall the day when the young girl would have told him anything, simply to have his full attention and now she had chosen to hide something major like this and he wondered if he had done something to make her feel like she couldn’t rely on him.

Now he was sitting beside her, unpacking the Chinese take-out he had brought along, eyes flicking to her trying to work all of this out. Her hands were her livelihood, her soul. How could she sit facing him in that coffee shop that morning, knowing she was suffering like this? Knowing that he could help? It hurt him - probably more his ego - but also because he cared. Not that he had shown it the last few years, ignoring her invites and forgetting to keep in touch. “Gracias, por invitarme (Thank you, for having me over).” She didn’t need to allow him back in her life, but when she had replied to his text, he was grateful. It was kind of her to let him back in, even if it was just to share take out.

Over the years Genesis had heard of Tiago’s success in becoming a doctor. As a young girl she looked up at him with stars in her eyes and belief that he could do anything. The man now had been a friend of Cynthia’s back then, understanding that her older sister and him had dated yet were mostly friends. Their families were friends. So, she saw him often but never enough for a girl who proclaimed she was going to marry him some day. Not only was Tiago handsome and charming, he actually gave her the time of day and showed interest in being friendly with her too. Never once treating her as Thia’s kid sister who stared at him too much.

Seeing him the week prior in the café around the block from the hospital where she was due to have a physical therapy session on her hand, her cheeks burned a bit in the reunion with the former crush. It had been exhilarating to see Tiago again, not only because of past connections, but because adulthood had taken them far away from each other. Beyond her infatuation he had made a big difference in her life in how he treated her. Since she was a small child she was performing for big audiences, and as much as she was passioned with music and playing the piano, Gen had little to no childhood and was always surrounded by adults who had treated her as a business. Tiago stood out amongst that.

Despite having given him her phone number in hopes that this time they’d keep in touch and she’d actually get to see him --- something she gave him a hard time over last week with him dodging her shows and whatnot in the past --- the brunette hadn’t expected that she’d hear from him so soon. That morning she’d woken with a soreness and stiffness that had her popping pain killers and icing her hand off and on --- it was bad enough that she couldn’t even practice this day. As she waited on Tiago to arrive, she thought back to how they’d not only seen each other at the cafê but she ended up running into him at the hospital after her therapy session. Unfortunately, she handled the moment with little grace and panicked, getting out of there as quick as possible.

The apartment she’d called home for the last four years in Elysée was beautiful and spotless, with a stunning grand piano in the living room. She kept opening and closing her hand, flexing her fingers and putting as much movement into them as she could. It hurt but it seemed to help with hopefully not appearing too obvious to the doctor. This injury she hadn’t been handling well mentally and emotionally, though outwardly she had to appear strong and unfazed. “Hola entra y ponte cómodo. (Hello, come in and make yourself comfortable.)” Genesis opened the door wide and wore a smile, happy to see him and bright green gaze searching for what takeout he’d brought with him. “Déjame tomar eso. (Let me take that.)” Reaching for the bag as she let him in, she quickly pulled back with her left hand and smiled, switching to offer her right. Customary, the brunette moved in to kiss his cheek in greeting and led him to the couch and coffee table. “If you prefer to eat over there,” she pointed at the dining table, “we could, just thought in case you wanted to watch something ---” For some reason a bit of nerves settled in her stomach.

Not long after the words have left her mouth, he’s back at the counter, ordering another americano for this woman. It’s the least he can do really, it’s his own fault for not realizing it wasn’t his. He yawns as he waits for the coffee to be made, along with taking his own when it’s ready. Soon, his name is called out a second time and he brings the freshly made drink over to the other.

“Sorry again, I think I’m just having a hard time this morning.” He gives her a sheepish smile, hoping she isn’t too annoyed with him. “I blame myself for not making coffee at home, I swear my brain doesn’t function without caffeine.” Even though he’s joking, he is being partially serious. With how busy his life can get he honestly needs the coffee in order to get through the day, otherwise it might be game over.

With brows raised in surprise, Gen watched as he wordlessly walked away and went to order a new americano. Rather than stand awkwardly following the exchange, the brunette pulled her phone from her pocket and returned a couple of messages before he came back with a fresh drink in hand. With a smile, she graciously retrieved it from his grasp.

“Thats the downfall of caffeine ---” Finding familiarity in his words she let out a sigh at how much coffee intake impacted her day. “It makes you dependent on it. Maybe if we learned the art of proper rest we wouldn’t need the boost so much as so often.” A single shouldered shrug as she spoke conversationally. “Thank you for this,” Gen lifted her drink, “I hope your day gets better. Let’s hope this coffee does the trick of making us feel more alive.”

JOSHI, RONAV.

He matched her smile as he leaned against one of the racks, causing it to wobble slightly. Wasn’t the back and forth compliments how they developed this…relationship? If one could call it that. “I remember you liking my charm,” he spoke quietly, as if not to reveal their past to the two other customers in the store. Brows raised and he shifted from one foot to the other– it wasn’t easy for him either but he was the one who initiated it. “I guess next time I see you I’ll keep walking then,” he said, harsher than intended. The confusion of Gen being here didn’t allow for Ronav to think about what he said and how he said it.

Ronav remained against the uneven rack as she changed position. Leaving was always an option– they could say goodbye and remain civil, hopefully to never have this uncomfortable interaction again. “Thanks,” he ran both hands through his hair. “Nothing’s changed. Still making coffee, still…uh…you know. It’s just me,” he shrugged. There wasn’t anything more to tell her. There shouldn’t be anything more to tell her. His brown eyes connected with her green ones, admiring just how bright they looked in the light. “A while?” he repeated, slightly surprised.

He didn’t think he’d ever see her again, but there she was. He shouldn’t have been thinking about seeing her again; they were supposed to be on their separate ways. “Nothing’s going on,” Ronav said, laughing lightly. “I just, if you’re here for a while would you want to get together one night? Catch up?”

“I did, and I probably still do --- just need a reminder.” The words hit the space between them with a playful lilt, meant to tease and perhaps meant to convey that she missed their short lived physical affair. A moment later she was reeling from the bite of his words. Clearly the jest hadn’t gone over well and the brunette took into account that it was likely too early into a reunion to fall into a place of familiarity and comfort. The fact that Ronav hadn’t expected to see her ever again, especially since he knew how to reach her, spoke volumes. Not that she had been upset about it, they’d each had their needs met and moved on. Genesis simply didn’t think it would be this awkward and uncomfortable. “Don’t,” she twisted her lips for a second, “it’s good to see you and talk to you.”

The coldness kept throwing her off. Had they gone their separate ways with something negative lingering between them and she had been too oblivious? The brunette didn’t want to think too deep into it, and rather than overthink the connection here --- “Is something wrong? Have I done something to upset or offend you?” At this point, Gen didn’t care about the other music patrons. This between the two of them right now was making her stomach uneasy. Since there wasn’t much to do with the shortness of information he’d offered in his reply, Genesis let it be. With them gazing into each other’s eyes, hers held a look of caution. “Yeah, I live in Paris. I play at Théâtre Edouard VII once every other week and have been for a couple of years.” It was possible he’d missed the advertisements.

Despite the laugh that fell from his lips, Gen still had to consider his question --- the current tension wasn’t something she wanted to continue. So, maybe, catching up would make things better. “Do you still have my number?” There’d be no judgement if he deleted it. “We can figure out a time and place. I think catching up would be nice.” Not that they had ever really done much talking in the past, but maybe this was a new thing. A good thing.

JOSHI, RONAV.

The lump in his throat could have been avoided had he kept walking. He slid his thumbs through the empty belt loops on his pants and chuckled nervously. “Yeah, I didn’t think I’d see you again,” he repeated. It wasn’t a bad thing that they had run into each other– Ronav just thought he’d see the gates of Heaven before seeing her again. “You still got a nice smile,” he commented quietly.

Paris was a big city. On top of the size of the city, it tended to be overrun with tourists, unfamiliar faces that he would never see again. It made things easier that way. “Historically, the odds have never been in my favor,” his eyes met hers, a bit of humor hiding behind them. They knew each other well enough to tease lightly, but it didn’t make the air any less thick.

“I’ve been well,” Ronav answered as he cleared his throat. It wasn’t a lie, but life was tricky– there were ups and downs. Ronav was employed, had shelter, and managed to smile at least once a day– that seemed to fall under doing well. This wasn’t the scenario where Ronav wanted to become vulnerable; that wasn’t how they worked. “You uh, you look great,” a shrug. Was it necessary to say? “How long are you here for? A weekend or so?”

Something Gen had appreciated about Ronav was his honesty. As ugly as the truth could be sometimes, it was much better than ever being comforted with a lie. “And you haven’t lost your charm.” The compliment had only prompted the curving of her lips to return, and as he stood there before her now, the brunette took him in. Nothing really seemed to have changed, though she supposed she hadn’t expected it to. In fact, there’d been no expectations held between them.

A small chuckle bubbled up and green eyes turned away from him for a moment, suddenly aware of the very public place they stood awkwardly. With her gaze bouncing around from customer to browser then returning to Ronav, her tongue was gently poking at her cheek. “Looks like you’re keeping your streak. But ---” A tsk sounded off the roof of her mouth. “It’s not like this moment is easy for me.”

Keeping her left hand in her pocket, Genesis turned slightly and angled toward a catalogue of records. Her head bobbed at his words and a striking shade of green glanced his way every now and then. “That’s good to hear. You look well. Has, umm, anything changed since the last time I saw you?” Meaning in his life, nothing else. The question made her chuckle and with her hand resting atop the records, Gen turned to face Ronav once more. She had been living in Paris for four years and had a residency at Théâtre Edouard VII where she’d performed regularly until her injury. “A while I think. Longer than a weekend for sure. What’s going on?”
