Over the years Genesis had heard of Tiago’s success in becoming a doctor. As a young girl she looked up at him with stars in her eyes and belief that he could do anything. The man now had been a friend of Cynthia’s back then, understanding that her older sister and him had dated yet were mostly friends. Their families were friends. So, she saw him often but never enough for a girl who proclaimed she was going to marry him some day. Not only was Tiago handsome and charming, he actually gave her the time of day and showed interest in being friendly with her too. Never once treating her as Thia’s kid sister who stared at him too much.
Seeing him the week prior in the café around the block from the hospital where she was due to have a physical therapy session on her hand, her cheeks burned a bit in the reunion with the former crush. It had been exhilarating to see Tiago again, not only because of past connections, but because adulthood had taken them far away from each other. Beyond her infatuation he had made a big difference in her life in how he treated her. Since she was a small child she was performing for big audiences, and as much as she was passioned with music and playing the piano, Gen had little to no childhood and was always surrounded by adults who had treated her as a business. Tiago stood out amongst that.
Despite having given him her phone number in hopes that this time they’d keep in touch and she’d actually get to see him — something she gave him a hard time over last week with him dodging her shows and whatnot in the past — the brunette hadn’t expected that she’d hear from him so soon. That morning she’d woken with a soreness and stiffness that had her popping pain killers and icing her hand off and on — it was bad enough that she couldn’t even practice this day. As she waited on Tiago to arrive, she thought back to how they’d not only seen each other at the cafê but she ended up running into him at the hospital after her therapy session. Unfortunately, she handled the moment with little grace and panicked, getting out of there as quick as possible.
The apartment she’d called home for the last four years in Elysée was beautiful and spotless, with a stunning grand piano in the living room. She kept opening and closing her hand, flexing her fingers and putting as much movement into them as she could. It hurt but it seemed to help with hopefully not appearing too obvious to the doctor. This injury she hadn’t been handling well mentally and emotionally, though outwardly she had to appear strong and unfazed. “Hola entra y ponte cómodo. (Hello, come in and make yourself comfortable.)” Genesis opened the door wide and wore a smile, happy to see him and bright green gaze searching for what takeout he’d brought with him. “Déjame tomar eso. (Let me take that.)” Reaching for the bag as she let him in, she quickly pulled back with her left hand and smiled, switching to offer her right. Customary, the brunette moved in to kiss his cheek in greeting and led him to the couch and coffee table. “If you prefer to eat over there,” she pointed at the dining table, “we could, just thought in case you wanted to watch something —” For some reason a bit of nerves settled in her stomach.
The more time Tiago spent in Mexico the more he learned about the Del Razo family, especially when he had grown closer to Cynthia. She had been his first real girlfriend and he had fell hard, even though it had only lasted one summer. It was young love - fast and fleeting but unforgettable. The time spent at their home, he had also grown closer to Genesis, a cute kid who always hung about when he was over. The crush was obvious and for some it might have become bothersome but he had always been great with people, a trait that made him excel in his job. Tiago would go out of his way to spend time with the girl, happy to give her the attention she so craved if it brought a smile to her face, a smile that didn’t seem to shine as bright when her family were around. They were close and he would always go out of his way to invite her on dates with Thia, recognising that the young girl barely had a life outside of her career. Summer fun fairs or trips to the beach to play games or whatever else she liked to do, he would happily let her tag along.
That’s why seeing her again had been hard. They had both grown up and apart, something he knew had been mostly down to him. The summer after breaking up with Thia, the relationship with her family had grown difficult, and then soon he was studying and the blissful summers in his families homeland became a distant memory. The more time passed, the more he felt like he couldn’t reach out, and all the invites she sent for her shows in Europe went unopened - Tiago not sure how he was supposed to explain his sudden absence in her life. That could be traumatic for young kids and he felt guilty. A guilt that only heightened when his co-worker told him about her injury, like a dagger to the heart.
Enough time had passed ignoring her and hearing the news that day, it was a wake up call to the doctor that he needed to be a better friend. It’s why he had contacted her straight away, needing to make up for this lost time as soon as possible. Plus, he needed to know what was going on as he wanted to help. He respected his colleagues but he also knew that not many cared for their patients like he did. If she wasn’t receiving adequate care and support, then he would fix it.
Brown eyes noted the switch of hands but said nothing. He couldn’t exactly jump to that right away when they were almost strangers now, he had to warm up to that question. “Thank you.” Tiago also kissed her cheek, memories of how she would stand on tip toes to kiss his cheek as a child coming back, now she simply had to lean. So much had changed. “Here is fine,” Tiago said, smiling at her as he sat on the couch. “I thought it might be nice if we talked -- catch up since it’s been like, what? Ten years or so...” A sadness coloured his expression, realising how long he had ignored her, time passing so quickly with his studies and job. “How have you been?” His eyes fell to her injured hand but quickly flicked back to her face, careful not to give anything away.
