binged episodes 1-7 of tadc again and I have thoughts so below are the largely disconnected and unorganized thoughts of a sleep deprived autistic girl if anyone is interested lmao
trying to keep this spoiler free for the finale but I have seen the leaks and maybe that influences my perspective so this is a warning
okay so I want to start with my main criticism of the show which is that I think it could have used one more episode, specifically to actually resolve Pomni and Ragatha's conflict on screen instead of just letting the audience pick up that they talked off screen between episodes 6 and 7, and to give Zooble some more focus. Zooble really doesn't get much time to shine, everyone else has a focus episode or a large role but Zooble really only has the spotlight in The Mystery Of Mildenhall Manor and They All Get Guns. Episode 3 was supposed to be their episode along with Kinger, but I really think Kinger overshadowed them completely in it. I don't think that would be a big deal if they had more later, but they don't really have that episode for them. I think the show does a really good job at giving all the characters focus within the individual episodes, but the actual focus of each episode doesn't feel that well distributed and I think Zooble is the main victim of that. I don't think their issues are resolved off screen entirely, their talk with Gangle about loving yourself is a big turning point for them, but I'd have liked to see more. just one more episode before the Escape Adventure dealing with both them and Pomni and Ragatha's relationship would have been nice, and I think those two plot points could both fit within one episode without overcrowding it
besides that I really liked rewatching it!! shocker that I went from loving the show before my fourth rewatch in 2ish month and loving it after that rewatch but I had a blast. the show's best strength is the characters, even the ones I like the least are still really fun to watch and I do like seeing them have their moments and time to shine. there's no bad character here, all of them are great and I love seeing them interact together and their different dynamics and roles.
I'm obviously a Jax fan and a huge believer in the theory that she's trans but I think she's super interesting. I think we're seeing her at her absolute worst, hardcore repression + the circus being hell + her friends are fucking dead it makes sense for how she got to a point that she's as bad to the others as she is now, and I can see her being a lot better to be around in the past and that being a part of why she's still put up with now. at the same time that doesn't excuse her actions, she's horrible to everyone around her. even if the physical side of it isn't as bad as I thought on my first viewing (Ragatha just walks off being tossed in a deep fryer and I have burnt myself with those before the circus has a whole different level of physical tolerance) the mental side is so much worse. this is a world where the mental state of someone is the only thing that keeps them alive and Jax tormenting them is awful. it's really interesting to me though, I don't really need characters I like to be good people because when they're as much of a mess as Jax is I find it really interesting thinking about how they got there and what could make them get better or worse. not going to go into too much beyond this because finale spoilers but wowie I love Jax she's a mess
the rest of the cast is also really good though!! Ragatha's constant need for approval and wanting to be there for people is extremely relatable to me, she's not literally me exactly, I save that label for characters I brainrot over and are not me at all, but there's plenty of overlap in that part and I like seeing those things explored. Zooble is non binary which is great, I don't see many nb characters outside of media that specifically has a queer focus so I like tadc including them and once again their struggles with body dysmorphia is also real. I like seeing them work through it and I wanted more. plus their relationship with Gangle is really sweet!! I love them and seeing their relationship grow throughout the series it's a lot of fun. I don't have much to say about Kinger and Caine but they're also both interesting I just don't really know what to say but I like them they're cool
speaking of Jax cannot call herself the Funny One while Kinger and Bubble exist sorry but she's third place
also it was great seeing the animation improve throughout the show!! it's wild how much of a glowup the show has gotten without it ever having felt bad in the first place. it looks weird after I got used to the later series but it's still good and well done. it's a similar thing to the humor where I thought it was funny in the pilot but it got funnier in episode 2 and then 3 and on are just full of things that actually made me laugh out loud I don't do that often it's great to see
okay those are all my thoughts at the moment but it's past midnight and I have things to do in the morning with paperwork and being an adult so maybe I'll show up again later to ramble into the void again but for now goodnight chat
the first time I watched tadc I spent the first 3 episodes being really annoyed by Jax and didn't understand at all why people liked him, then episode 4 happened and I slowly started to realize over the next few episodes wait she's really interesting I'm going to brainrot over her
always blows me away how fast some fanfic writers can get things out, like I cannot make myself sit down and do things that I want to do 90% of the time how do they do so much so fast
