Aspen Trip | Day 1

When the other said they would like a cup of tea, she filled it with enough water for two people plugging the kettle in. Keila then searched for mugs. “It must have been fun coming up here.I am from Iraq. We don’t get snow.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know if I will ski. Haven’t thought about it. Will you?”

“Not this time,” Genevieve unwrapped the scarf from around her shoulders, revealing the sling constricting her left arm, “I was made to promise not to touch the slopes this trip. But you definitely should try it, it is a lot of fun.”

Aspen Trip | Day 1

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Genevieve. I’m Keila.” She strolled into the kitchen in search of a tea pot. “This is my first time up here.” It was beautiful, there was no denying it. “Would you like a cup of tea?”

“Nice to meet you.” Genevieve rolled her bag up to the door of the bedroom opposite the one Keila had come out of, and left it at the threshold. “I would love a cup, thank you.” She rubbed her hands together, it was definitely colder up in the mountains.

“I used to come up here as a child, often, with my family. It’s really quite something,” she moved toward the kitchen area of the cabin and took a seat at the table, watching Keila as she made the tea. “will you be skiing this weekend?”

Aspen Trip | Day 1

Keila didn’t know either of the woman she would be sharing a cabin with. She brought her in bags that she had on the bus. She was the first one to arrive and decided to take the room that had the king size bed. She unpacked a little, placing a few books on the nightstand. Coming out of the bedroom she saw someone walking through the doors. “Hello.” She smiled at them.

Genevieve wasn’t positive about taking the trip to Aspen. She’d been pretty down since her sister-in-law and niece had moved away from Denver and wasn’t sure how up to a trip she’d be. Deciding at the last minute it might be nice to get away from the empty apartment for a while, she packed her bags and called a car.

She’d arrived later than she thought she would - the traffic had been dense - and rolled her luggage behind her as she stepped into the cabin. It was sweet and warm, and she heard rustling coming from one of the bedrooms and was soon greeted by a young woman.

“Hi, I’m Genevieve,” she smiled at the stranger, who was either Quinn or Keila, “I always forget how beautiful it is up here,” she mused, looking out the window at the mountains.

It had only been a few hours since she’d gotten the call from Becca, saying that she and Alana were leaving to help her mother in Florida. Genevieve understood, of course, she would do the same for her mother. But the timing on a personal level was not one that settled well with her. She’d moved back to Denver mostly for the comfort she knew having Becca near by would bring, and now? She was on her own again.

The hallways were surprisingly quiet as Genevieve walked up and down them. She was doing anything at this point but going home to her apartment. She wasn’t ready for the empty quiet. Her stress was relieved a bit, however, when she spotted a familiar face.

“Casey,” she called out, walking toward the young brunette who she spotted on the other end of the hallway. She wasn’t sure if Becca had called and told her, so she wasn’t sure how Casey was doing at this particular moment, either. She knew how close she and Becca were.

cupcake mix-up // genevieve & emmett

Genevieve had always put her faith in the local bakeries in her hometown of Denver. In NYC, there were so many customers at all times, you never had the face time with the baker, the personal connection wasn’t there. But in Denver, Genevieve recognized the faces of each worker in Big Fat Cupcakes, even from stopping by over the years for Holiday treats for the family. For twenty years she’d never had a problem with them, but the theater themed cupcakes she ordered turned up in the shape of a vanilla frosted, plain-old cake. Not quite.

She’d promised to have the cupcakes at the event she was helping with, so she quickly ordered an Uber, cake box in hand, and made her way to the bakery.

Genevieve arrived at the same time as the person on the other end of the mix-up, she assumed, because someone was standing in front of her with a box shaped for their cupcakes. She didn’t get to him before he went to the cashier and they took the cupcakes back from him.

“Hi,” Genevieve came up from behind him, “I’m sorry, I think those were for me,” she turned to the stranger beside her, placing the cake on the counter so she could open the top, “does this look like your order?”

“I’m sorry ma’am, we have to take them back and remake your order, since they’ve been taken out of the store. Store policy.”

It wasn’t like she was going to stand and argue with the girl. She was annoyed, sure, but it wasn’t as if she had anything to do.

Nevada nodded, “Basically, though the mountains and trails brought me here as well. I’m teaching music education, at a school here in Denver. I work with troubled kids and ones with special needs.”

“Music education, that’s wonderful.” Genevieve’s ears always perked at the sound of an arts education, she was a sucker for any form. “I did a lot of work with the theater community in New York, if any of my musical colleagues happen to be in the area I can give you a call. I’m sure they’d love to stop by and talk to the kids,” she offered.

“Well, if you ever need to get out of the house because it’s driving you crazy you can always come and visit me down at city hall. I can’t promise it’ll be very interesting but there is a really good coffee truck outside that does the best in the city. In my opinion.” Casey said with a small smile, kindness in her eyes as she looked at the blonde. It couldn’t be easy to go through everything she’d been through and then start again in a new city, even if you did have family there. “That’s so great, so would you go back to charity work? Maybe you could put on a charity performance of something on at Queens. I know everyone in the building would love that.”

“In city hall? I guess Becca didn’t tell me everything, what do you do in city hall?” Genevieve appreciated the invitation. She was looking forward to finding a new support system and close friends in her hometown. Aside from Becca and a few family members, everyone closest to her had “gotten out” as they’d put it at the time. On to bigger and better, or so they thought.

“I would love to!” Genevieve exclaimed at the idea of a charity performance, “I have so many lovely connections in New York, as well, I’m sure I could guilt a few of them into coming to perform. I’ll have to look around for a local cause.”

“Oh, that case?” Brighton said, glancing behind her for a second. “That’s my travel case for my snowboarding gear. Though I will be honest, It’s kind of my go to luggage when I travel anywhere since it’s easy to pick out in baggage claim.”

“Snowboarding, wow,” Genevieve remembered the ski weekends getaways she used to have with her husband, she had never been very good at it, “well you will get plenty of use of that here.”

The phone in her hand buzzed, Becca was home and waiting to get lunch, “I have to run, but it was nice to meet you, and thank you for rescuing my poor phone,” Genevieve smiled.

Nevada shook the blonde’s hand, “It’s nice to meet you as well. Do you go by Genevieve, or something short for it? Thank you, it’s a beautiful city. I couldn’t resist moving here.”

“Just Genevieve, usually,” she smiled awkwardly, the only people who ever used nicknames for her were her husband and her sister in law, none that she really loved though. Genevieve chose to ignore the cooling food in her hands, opting to potentially have another friendly face in her building, “What brought you here? A job?”

Casey didn’t push the question, simply let the woman think about her answer as she sat in silence, looking at her softly. It must be a huge change to up and move across the country after something so tragic had happened. She wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d said she didn’t know, Casey herself probably wouldn’t at this point. 

She smiled as she said she wanted to spend as much time with her sister in law and niece as possible, it was sweet how much she loved them and how close they all were. “Physical therapy, of course that’s going to be taking up a lot of your time. It’ll give you something to focus on though, which will be good right?” Her voice wasn’t hounding, just conversational so as to keep things like. “And i’m sure there are lots of things you could do in the theater community. What would be your ideal role?”

Genevieve hadn’t put this much real thought into her move until now; everything up until this point had been fairly spontaneous.

“Yes, physical therapy will definitely take up some of my time, which will be good. Keep me out of the house and focused. I honestly don’t feel like I’m ready for it, but doctor’s orders, you know? We must comply,” she lightly teased her circumstance. “I would love to go back to a similar role I had in New York, I was more of a producer, I found or provided the funding for the productions. I also did a lot of charity work, which is what I spent my time on before all of this...”

“I’ve never taken an Uber, I usually just drive myself everywhere, or walk.” He smiled softly, though Nev was sure there would be a time he might have to use one.  “If I bump into you again, I’ll tell you what I think. I’m Nevada, by the way”

“Please do, I hope you enjoy it,” Genevieve held out her hand, “Genevieve, it’s nice to meet you. And welcome to the area.” Viv felt so lucky to live in a place with such friendly people, it was such a turnaround from New York.

“Old habits die hard, I suppose but sometimes it’s bet to just disconnect from all of it and have your phone lost for a few hours. I love when I’m on the mountains for the day when I go out and don’t have my phone on me. It just feels great to not have someone constantly in your ear about what plans you had or whatever.” She smiled. “Phew! That’s good and yeah, don’t mention it.”

“Exactly,” she smiled, noting her mention of the mountains, figuring that must have to do with what was in the black case, “I have to ask because my curiosity is getting the better of me, what is in that case?”

Casey gave the woman a soft smile when she said she’d love the baby so much she wouldn’t know what to do with herself, she was looking forward to that feeling if she was honest. To have something to pour all her love into would be a lovely experience, she knew it was going to be true since she already loved the unborn child and she’d never even met him. “Well, i was pretty intimidated when I wasn’t on my own too so at least in that respect it doesn’t make much of a different.” She admitted, reaching over and picking up the glass of water Genevieve had got for her, taking a couple of sips.  

“Well, Becca is amazing, she’s already been amazing to me regardless of how things are going forward.” The girl was very grateful to the red haired woman, seeing that her sister in law knew how great she was as well. “So, what are you planning on doing now you’re in Denver?” She asked, moving the topic a little so as to not let herself get emotional. 

Genevieve leaned back in her chair, carefully, at the change of topic and considered the question. What was she planning on doing?

“Well, for starters, I will be spending as much time as I can catching up with Alana and Becca,” she had missed the two of them unbearably, “and I start physical therapy soon, so that will keep me busy. I suppose eventually I will have to go see my parents... and I’m hopeful that I can work my way into the theater community in this area. Anywhere I can be needed.” It seemed she knew more about her plan for the coming months than she thought she did.

Nevada felt his stomach grumble louder, “Veggie egg rolls, Mn. They sound good. Curried coconut noodle bowl? Jeesh, that sounds amazing. I think I know were South Broadway is if not siri should.”

“I’ve learned every Uber driver in this city knows exactly where to go when I say Twin Dragon, no map needed,” she laughed, she hadn’t been here very long but she’d already had three separate drivers take her to the Chinese restaurant, “The noodle bowl will have to be a must for your first time, just trust me.” It felt nice to banter with a stranger, this was not something she would be caught doing in New York.

Casey looked at her softly, her heart breaking at the womans words. She knew all too well what she was talking about because she’d been through it herself. Not with a husband, but with members of her family, and it was a pain that never truly left. The lawyer reached out and took the blondes hand, giving it a light squeeze to show she was there for her. “Please don’t be sorry I absolutely understand, and it’s not depressing it’s just life. I lost members of my family about six years ago, and it never quite feels real. It just…the pain dulls. It becomes easier to manage. I’m sorry you’re going through this.”

She took her hand away, placing it on her stomach when Genevieve mentioned that she was pregnant, nodding with a small smile. “I’m just shy of four months. It’s…yeah it’s exciting but also quite a daunting experience. Especially since I’m on my own.” She just ripped off the band aid and told the woman about her singleness, there was no point pretending otherwise. Maybe it would help them bond, they shared something. 

Genevieve appreciate’s Casey’s empathy. It felt nice to be listened to, and note responded to with the strangely common “at least you’re alive” statement most of her New York acquaintances gave her when she told them the reason for her departure.

When Casey said she was alone, Genevieve couldn’t help but feel for the girl. Becca had told her that Casey was having a somewhat hard time, but she hadn’t given her details.

“It’s very intimidating, I won’t lie to you,” Genevieve smiled warmly, “but it will be the greatest thing you do. You are going to love that baby so much you are not going to know what to do with yourself,” Genevieve cursed the tears that welled up in her eyes briefly, hoping they went unnoticed by her guest, “and with Becca in your life, there’s no way she will let you be alone. Not for long anyway.” If there was one thing her sister-in-law was, it was reliable.

“Really? That’s something you don’t here in this day and age. Normally people can’t breathe if their phone isn’t in their sight for more then a minute or not even on their person.” She told her as she handed back the phone with a smile. “I hope it didn’t crack or anything, I know what a bitch it is to get them fixed and all that.”

“Oh yes, I’ve been scolded many-a-time for not keeping my phone on and on me at all times,” it was never a high priority on Genevieve’s list to reply to text messages right as they came in or be in constant contact with everyone at all times. With a life that pretty succinctly belonged in her apartment in New York, there wasn’t much to keep up with. She turned the phone over and surveyed the screen, “Not a scratch,” she sighed a sigh of relief, she did not need another thing to take care of, “thank you for calling me back.”
