March 12th 1912: The Girl Scouts founded

On this day in 1912, the Girl Guides - who would later become the Girl Scouts of the USA - were founded. The organisation was founded by Juliette Gordon Low, after she met the founder of Scouting - Robert Baden-Powell. The first Girl Scout meeting took place on March 12th in Savannah, Georgia, with 18 girls attending; there are now over 3.2 million members. Low wanted to give America and the world “something for the girls” and aimed to encourage girls to become active citizens and to develop their full potential. They soon became an important group in the USA, with Martin Luther King Jr describing the Girl Scouts as “a force for desegregation” in the 1950s and 1960s.

On funerals

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the deaths of both my grandfathers and an aunt. All three deaths happened within 9 months of each other. When people you love die, you burry them and have a funeral, and for me it was dreadfully sad. But now I think that the worst funerals happen later - when you’re sitting in a meeting or eating alone, wherever or whenever. Loss hits you in the chest, smothering. It’s not as fresh but it’s heavier maybe. These “later funerals” for the dead really refine you as a person, making you more sensitive to everyone’s pain. Then I started realizing these “later funerals” on the inside are what you have to do for the beloved friends who drift away or quit doing life with you. When a relationship dies, you have to funeral it. Those interior burials of phone calls that won’t happen again, car rides that won’t happen again, songs that can’t be sung without sad attachments – those are the other funerals I have some days. Sometimes you have funerals for people who have died. And sometimes you have funerals when you realize you may be dead to some people you loved.
