“The professor I had lived with, his children, their noses, they were always running. Their hands — there were always mud or food… he did not know how sick it made me…”

“I’m so sorry Simon. That must have been miserable for you. I can make sure Duvet stays out of your items and doesn’t touch out if that makes you feel better.”

*Time is not a river, but a water system for all of humanity. It is a complex network of branching chronologies, running over and into itself at a million junctures. It is everywhere it needs to be at once — if one can waste it, they are among the infinitely fortunate.*

*Time can never repeat itself in full. Every interaction will change its makeup, if even in the most imperceptible of ways. Yet, it will always recycle itself. There will always be another chance. And yet, there will always be another tragedy…*

*So here Viktor sits again. The stone sitting in the stream of time. Unmoved, but shaped by its mechanizations. The hairline cracks deepen with every second. Still, he is uneven. Only fitting admits the quarry from the surface.*

*It’s a new year, and everything is worse.*

*This Christmas, there are no presents or stockings. The snow has not fallen. The carolers have gone silent.*

*Yet the cold remains. It remains, impenetrable. It remains in the empty office — in the looming shadows that hang over what was once his greatest source of joy. It radiates from him — everything he touches is infected with it.*

*Under his touch, a bitter chill has festered within the delicately wrapped gift he had meant to give his beloved — a meticulously crafted puzzle box. Tucked within is a slip of paper containing the first clue of a house-wide scavenger hunt, ending at the collection.*

*There, lit by thousands of electric dots of light, a miniaturized monument of himself and Jerry.*
