THANATOS from HADES

okay he may be death incarnate but thanatos is the god of peaceful death so he’s relatively non-violent

to the point where achilles remarks he wishes he had met thanatos and not uh, the others

he’s also mega tsundere, particularly with zagreus; bad at feeling emotions so he avoids them by teleporting away

takes his job really really seriously - and expects others to do the same

big mama’s boy, and his mom is literally the night personified. in greek mythology he has a dad but in hades he does not. only mom.

Is she your familiar?" Perhaps that would make this individual a witch, but Thanatos could not be sure. His own family engaged in such activities, but not any he had seen in quite a long time.

(Of course, he had his own enchanted doll that he had given to Zagreus), a fact of which he remembers with a touch of embarrassment.

"She seems quite...Happy." Or, well, her face was certainly put on her that way.

Golden eyes squint at the wheel as it spins around, a small ball moving around, flitting over each pit in the wheel precariously as both spun almost away from each other. Odd, then, how excited each of the humans were to see the wheel spin. Moreso than they had been to see a god accidentally spawn in their midst among smoke and haze.

"It's a...game?" He asks nobody in particular, shifting to see as the wheel began to slow down. The sign above the table said Roulette.

Her sword was fascinating. So unlike the weaponry he normally saw, and something more akin to the Infernal Arms he saw Zagreus wield than a typical blade.

(If one could even call it a blade, it did not seem sharp, nor did that seem to be the purpose it served.)

His thoughts that this sword was unlike many he had seen were interrupted when he heard the sword...Speak? Speak!

Certainly then, similar to speaking through the boons of the Gods - he was alert that there may be something - or someone watching them here.

"Your...Sword. It spoke."

Bare feet touch grass having quickly cooled from the moonrise many hours ago as he ascends the hill. It's quiet, save for the wind moving through the flora. Things he was unused to being around, feet above the ground as not to disturb living things with his presence.

(He disliked being so mortal, and yet it gave way to many new experiences. It was, like much else, complicated.)

There is slight surprise on Death's face as he sees another so late. Mortals can be nervous at a quiet approach, so he considers it lucky that his feet are touching the ground.

The silence doesn't bother him, but he does realize that his hooded appearance can be...Disconcerting. He should express he meant no harm.

"Usually I find myself alone up here at this hour." Awkward, but it would serve.

Luckily, the prince was hardly difficult to find this time, given he was apparently in the home next door. While he could simply appear, it seemed others may be living in these quarters - which he remembered from last time.

He did feel his face flush, considering that there were scant few walls separating himself from his lover, but that was after he confirmed they were sharing the same memories.

Swallowing, he touches the doorknob. His feet are warm against the ground, he considers that it is not nearly so cold as it was the last time they were here.

Turning the knob, taking a deep breath, he enters the so-human abode.

"Zagreus?"

Red. The color of life and blood and the color of his counterpart, as well. Spirits of slaughter that one could not tell if they were clad or covered in it.

While he did not feel ill toward them, he, himself, was a god of gentle death. Of a spirit quietly slipping through the window on a cool breeze in their sleep. Ever since he was a child, really, hair long an bare feet quietly perching on the windowsill. Making nary a sound as humans waited for him to arrive.

They fear him more, now. A figure seemingly stalking the battlefield, when he is simply...There. Drawn to it by necessity of profession and not by desire to do so. Becoming less gentle by virtue of his charge and not by his own nature.

And thus the other, clad in red, made him feel ill at ease. Not living, but not quite dead. Something that existed in between but was not of the Underworld.

“What are you?” The unnatural reverberation of his voice gave his question an edge he did not full intend. But curiosity in the mouth of a god of death could never truly be dulled nor without an edge.

The damned place was cold, and he remembered it well as his bare feet hit the pavement and he felt himself become so decidedly fragile that he thought he might break as ice, simply by virtue of being frozen.

At the very least, he thought to himself briefly, there would be a way to keep warm. For there was hardly anyone warmer than the flame-footed god himself. Rather than walk, he remembered that here he had his teleportation, limited though it may be, and so he appeared behind Zagreus.

But it was in that moment he had considered how this place...Behaved. Not unlike both nothingness and everything - in fact he had simply felt as though he had gone to sleep and awoke once more on that platform. Albeit for a long time, given the surroundings, and that blasted device he had tossed out reading an entirely different year from how he understood it.

And then one must consider the ramifications of time existing outside of its domain. Time had passed here, and yet as far as he could tell his memories of home were...

Well, he supposed they were the same. And yet had it been so long...?

He could feel an anxiety welling in him, and all of this occurred within the moment before he uttered the name of the other: “Zag?”  And in the moments following that, an anxiety at the familiarity.

For, what if the Zagreus before him existed outside of his own time? There had been legends, rumors, among mankind for a long time that such things happened. And his own reading upon his previous time here left him...Disconcerted.

“It seems we’ve returned.” Good, simple. Doesn’t give too much away and becomes a way to determine if this Zag was...

What a peculiar sight in a land of peculiar sights. A young boy, who was nearly see-through, and with little spectres floating around him. Tilting his head to the side, he approached the boy, looking down at him. “You are...A shade?” Child shades were not so uncommon, although they were handled by he and Charon differently than adult Shades.

“Have you not been escorted across the river?“ Concern crossed his features, brow furrowed in contemplation.

“If not, then as there is no Styx here, I suppose your well-being is partly my responsibility. I am sorry my family and I have failed you.” Ah, this was more than he was used to speaking, but he bowed his head. To leave a Shade on the shore was oft necessary but sad. Sad for them, as neither Thanatos nor his psychopomp brethren could not stop to feel remorse for every human who was unable to cross over.

But here he felt a particular kind of sadness, since while that was not his job there was absolutely no way to do his job. Somehow, he thought, that made him feel more responsible for an inability to do a lifelong task.

This was not Mermaid Cove Mall.

A scuffle broke out nearby and spilled out into the street, leaving from place with big, glowing, red lights outlining some word he didn’t quite recognize and the blazing neon caused him to look away, pulling his hood tighter around him as the two men fighting rolled into the road.

This was definitely not Mermaid Cove Mall.

He gathered his own energy, and then heard the first gong but...Not the second. Thanatos blinked, still seeing the same red neon glow on the ground in front of him. Had his miscounted?

“What...?”

Looking around, he was still standing in the middle of the same area. Completely in the same area, standing in the middle of the street, completely dumbfounded. And still without shoes.

Golden eyes blinked in confusion at the shopkeep standing in the doorway. Pearl Street was high end, and he couldn’t help but til his head as he was trying to understand what the problem was. Dressed in dazzling gold accessories, draped in his finest black robes, too.

‘No shoes, no service.’

He did look down at his bare feet at that. It had been warm, and he had forgone the wrappings he normally wore since he had simply teleported where he needed to go.

“That is...Why I am here. For sandals.”

‘You’ll need to have shoes before you come in.’

“Erm...I understand. So, how...Would I...?” The shopkeeper looked understandably exasperated. But the Greek god did not seem to understand the problem. Nor the notion of online shopping.

And so time moved on in the most fascinating of ways. A subtle kind of calm only brought to those who had led a life consisting of the exact opposite, although his interest in this place did not subside. Zagreus’ restless nature fueled his own interest in answers, and his lack of any work of official duties had led him to the library in Cotes.

More than others, he felt relatively welcomed here. The odd creatures did not pay him much mind, and he was leafing through a book of obscure language when he looked up to see someone else in here.

“Most of the books are not in any recognizable language.”

“Although you can cross reference other books to discern something.” Not that he was inclined to be necessarily helpful, simply that he had not seen the other around before. Thanatos pulled his hood over his features and went back to his own reading.

The chocolates and flowers are nearly shoved at Zagreus, mainly to hide the flush on his face. “I heard from a one-eyed young woman that today was a holiday on the Surface that was meant for couples. These are the traditional gifts.“

“And...Well. Yes. Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Badou blinks once, twice. Then lets out a little chuckle. 

“Yeah, I’m as human as they come– ten toes, one ass, the usual.” Waves a hand, wave, wave. “I’ve been in this place a long time, so I guess I’m used to weird things like that. I don’t even sneeze at it.”

Don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. Sometimes you can’t react like you’d want to, with fear and knees-knocking and screaming (okay he still does that), because it could cost you your life. Those precious seconds. 

Even if it isn’t so permanent here.

Thanatos tilts his head to the side, considering the words that the young human was saying. “Well, I have those characteristics, so it is not entirely for humans...” He trails off, considering many of the other gods. Although it was unsurprising, and he’d met plenty of humans before. Although it was at the end of their lives.

“Regardless, it then seems as though this is a normal occurrence, then? The dead rising, mirages of castles, so called Reapers patrolling the streets whilst gods descend from eclipses in the sky...” He sighs.

“...This place becomes stranger and stranger the more I dwell in it.”

      ✽ ❝ T-The prince? He’s here, too?! ❞ the gorgon soon blurts out once more, her focus becoming blurry as she attempts to converse with the death incarnate. Though his words aren’t lost on her, well… It’s still a lot to take in. Still unused to having hands once more, Dusa places one upon her cheek before flinching ever so lightly, glowing gaze looking back at Thanatos once more.

      ❝ I-I-I mean!! I’m glad… To hear that! That you aren’t here because of me, I mean. ❞

      ❝ Oh! But, u-uhm… Yes! I-I just arrived here recently… ❞

“Yes, the Prince is here.” Thank goodness, really, now that he thinks about it. Honestly, he’s not sure how well he would have been able to personally cope here, or become remotely well adjusted, if he hadn’t been able to be with Zagreus.

Oh, he’s getting distracted. He clears his throat, pink tinting his cheeks.

“Anyway, regardless.” Catching himself, he awkwardly tries to steer the conversation back to Dusa. “Yes, well, I am out of work, unfortunately. I have been investigating myself, but honestly, we are simply stuck here. All of us.” And Dusa....Wait, he blinked.

“Eh...You have your body back?”
