Just popping on here after a literal eternity to scream about DEXTER COMING BACK!!!!!!! I actually can’t believe it and was so surprised to see this.

I didn’t hate the ending itself as much as many other people. It actually did make sense to me (except for Dexter thinking it a good idea to put Harrison into Hannah’s care) but I just thought that the overall writing quality dropped so much in seasons 7 and 8. Which is a double shame, because I thought there was some really good plot points and acting in there. Hope the revival will be back to form, writing wise.

If I’m honest it’s really only that one thing that bothers me and that needs to be corrected in season 9: That the show made it out as if Hannah wasn’t dangerous for Harrison in the end. Which she clearly was. And it wasn’t just that Dexter didn’t see it in his infatuation, the writing made her go a 180° and that makes no sense whatsoever. Please, I need closure.

The betrayal of “Anne with an E,” a new CBC-Netflix adaptation, isn’t in the aesthetics but in the emotion.

Interesting. Here’s an alternative view.

I’ve never read the book, so I have nothing to compare the show to. But when I recently recommend the show to a friend, I described it as “wholesome, populated with overwhelmingly good (if flawed) characters, but without the sugary sentimentality and denial of reality that we find in those kinds of stories like Little House on the Prairie”. It’s not wrong to enjoy a story like that from its historical context, but there is no reason to make another version of it that denies the hardships of such a life to the point of ridiculousness. I have enjoyed every one of the changes that have been made in this adaptation as a current version speaking to current concerns. It’s unflinching and has no filter, but at the same time leaves you with a sense of optimism, that there are good people in the world, and that hardships can be overcome through lust for life. I really wonder in what kind of sanitized world the author of this piece lives that they cannot see this in this adaptation.

I might be a bit biased here as I don’t enjoy clubbing at the best of times and under the best circumstances. But that #unitedwestream initiative may just be about the saddest and dreariest thing I’ve ever seen.

Who would have thought that my normal hermit lifestyle would at some point be considered socially responsible? I’m kind of stunned at the number of people though, who seem to dread the idea of staying home for a few days that much. Have you no imagination whatsoever? Honestly, I’m just annoyed that I have to go out once a week to buy food. Stay home and stay safe, people!

It’s so ridiculous how much more expensive Apple products are in Europe than they are in the US. The cheapest Macbook is a whopping 265€/296$ more (1249€ vs. 1099$). Is that really just taxes (ca. 27%)? And you don’t even really get good Black Friday deals for them here, either.

Ignoring the fact that I’ve never asked my browser or youtube to translate anything (it keeps doing it randomly anyway, don’t know how to turn that off), whatever engine is responsible for this seems to be quite confused. It seems to think my English isn’t good enough, but I’m probably absolutely fluent in both French and German.

All the hip young kids that discovered activism yesterday: “Boycott Black Friday, just symbolically, you can get back to your regular shopping next week and make a statement. Things should have value, so pay full price!!”

Me: “Oh well, I really do have a knack for making unpopular choices ... “

Doctor Who. Coming early 2020.

I love this trailer, and after taking some time off I’m ready to start watching more Doctor Who again. Just started streaming season 2 again, and am excited to make way through the entire (again). Looking forward to new episodes!

Emma Watson was just nine when she was picked out of a line-up of would-be actors in her school gym to star in a film that would change her life in unimagina...

She is just such a lovely person, everytime I see her in an interview I’m just blown away by how genuine, kind and yes, smart, she is. Love her!

And to everyone giving her grief because when she started her activism she wasn’t on top of every single discourse at the time and she wasn’t always aware of her privilege: shut up! In case you didn’t know, it IS a journey, and I think she has sufficiently proven that she is always open to new ideas and to changing her perspective and becoming aware of these things. That’s actually a sign of intelligence. And she is genuinely trying from a perspective of kindness, which cannot be said about a lot of people these days.

Musing about Harry Potter and time

I think it’s so interesting that the most Harry-Potter obsessed generation is not the one that was growing up while the original books and movies came out (the original HP craze), but rather much younger. Because I’m actually that original generation. I read the first few books around the time the 4th book was released because they were all the rage back then and I also remember seeing the first movie at the cinema as a young teen. I remember that people around me who liked to read read Harry Potter (I myself enjoyed it, but also didn’t really get into it that much). Looking around my own generation now, most people (probably around 70-80%) have read at least some of the books, but they’re not obsessed at this point (and most of them they never really were).

But the generation that is now my students (born usually between 1997 and 2003, aka too young for the original round), whoa boy! HP is gospel to them! (not all of them, obviously, but noticeable numbers, among my students/on youtube etc.). Is that just because they’re younger and still in a phase where you’re more obsessed with things? I kind of doubt it, it’s not like you turn 30 and suddenly become pragmatic. I don’t know ...

But very interesting, indeed.

Streaming subscribers are sharing passwords and cheating systems in increasing numbers, creating an expensive problem for the services.

They seem to assume that everyone who has access via someone else’s account would pay for their own if they couldn’t access it this way anymore. I don’t think that’s true. Particularly now that competition is increasing between different streaming offers. People may use several of them if they’re paying nothing for some or only a fraction of the share, but they wouldn’t pay for all of them full price. I get a feeling that the whole business if kind of doomed, or at least the idea of constant growth and revenue, which might be good thing.
