Today's pick: not the map (a lovely Coronelli Madagascar) but its dedicatee, the Florentine librarian and bibliophile Antonio di Marco Magliabechi (1633-1714). Coronelli would give sought his favor as a scholar and correspondent, but we are struck by his character as preserved in this bust by Antonio Montaiuti. So if I were to guess who would invent an imaginary island dictatorship, with a history, leadership, armed forces and order of battle and make a set of meticulously detailed maps of the place, IN ESPERANTO, I would have expected it to be a Dungeon Master. I would NOT have expected an NSA crypyanalyst and world famous virtuoso flautist. Learn something every day in this biz. Do yourself a favor and Google Lambros Demetrios Callimahos. This guy was amazing. These maps were material for Callimahos' secret NSA cryptanalysis course which ran for 22 years to 12 students at a time. It must have been a hell of a class. #jamespick is one of his hands-down favorites: the first acquirable modern map of Europe, by Sebastian Munster. The cataloguing of this map is usually pretty sloppy, as the states have not yet been fully catalogued. That changes, now. This is a first block example (of two, not counting the 1588 map after Ortelius.) Guys, this one is nuts. 1893 real estate in San Francisco, (Sutro Heights, now known as Vista del Mar) owned by the future mayor, sold by a real estate huckster who three years later would be on the lam for embezzling FIFTY GRAND in 1896 dollars... mostly from his wife. Yes, she divorced him for that. And when the dust settled, he almost died in the Klondike rush. Super rare, because the printer's shop burned to the ground the year it was printed. So much winning!
