2025: Arkaroola, in South Australia, has some magnificent (and complex) geology. It is not close to anything but is worth a visit. These views are taken from Acacia Ridge, and show Cryogenian sediments of the Oodnaminta syncline. Ref: Australian Stratigraphic Units Database
2026: Bingie Bingie Point igneous suite, where there are a couple of episodes of felsic and mafic dyking (aplite, dolerite, basalt) into the Devonian Tuross Head tonalite and an associated gabroic diorite.
2025: Mt Hoei is a flank volcano on the south-eastern side of Mt Fuji that last erupted in 1707, causing extensive damage. There are two craters left. There is a fab but strenuous loop walk up to the Hoeizan summit from the Fujinomiya 5th Station.

2025: The Ediacaran geological period is named after the Ediacara Hills, which are found on the western fringes of the Flinders Ranges, 500km north of Adelaide in South Australia. The Ediacara are included in the recently-established Nilpena Ediacara National Park (2023) which preserves and showcases the Ediacaran biota found in the Rawnsley Quartzite (580-541 Ma) exposed there. They may be not the oldest Ediacarans but they are certainly the most diverse. The park has heavy security; and to visit you must take a tour. Certainly worth it to witness in situ some of the earliest complex life found on the planet.

2025: Spectacular rippling in Ediacaran ABC Range Quartzite at Buneyroo Gorge, Flinders Ranges. As per usual, sunnies for scale.
2025: Chevron folding in Ordovician turbidites at Horsehead Rock, Princess Beach, Narooma, NSW. Another reunion for Sydney Uni geology majors 1983!
2025: Cuestas of the stromatolite-bearing Trezona Formation (see previous post) around Enorama Creek, Flinders Ranges, with some emus thrown in for good measure.
2025: Great exposure of a stromatolite bioherm in the Trezona Formation (upper Cryogenian, approx 640 Ma) in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia . Sunnies for scale!

2025: Although very faint to the naked eye, a 14 second exposure allowed me to capture the comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) from Hallidays Pt, which is about 300 km north of Sydney on 26 January 2025 (Australia Day). EOS1DX with EF-24-70mm.
2023: Nothing cuter than a wombat joey. These wombats, and many others, are found on Maria Island (pronounced "Mar-ai-ah"). It is a magical place to visit, an hour's ferry ride off the east coast of Tasmania.
2024: Stuðlafoss
2024: Agath Platte, a Jurassic limestone peak so unique that it has its own beer label, overlooking the lake, Seeaplsee.
2024: The bizarre but spectacular Icelandic waterfall that is Brúarfoss, found about 10 min drive southwest of Geysir.
2024: Stuðlagil ravine on the river Jökla. Lucky the drone was handy as we had come down on the west side and you can see bugger-all from the farm there. Best to approach on the eastern side, park at Stuðlafoss, and then walk the remaining 2km up to the canyon.
2024: Grjótagjá, Iceland. This is rift faulting in basalts on the eastern side of Lake Myvatn. I was able to swim here 27 years ago but it is now too hot. For GOT enthusiasts, it is the place where they filmed Jon Snow and Ygritte becoming very close, special friends.
2024: Psuedocraters (or rootless cones) found at Blátjörn, on the western side of Lake Mývatn in Iceland. These are thought to be formed as the result of steam explosions from a fluid lava flowing over a wet surface (such as a swamp). I used a Mini 3 Pro for these shots.
