theartfulthatcher:
… Well, damn. Osei actually had actually managed to raise a semi-valid point. That happened so seldom that it’s occurrence was practically grounds for a national holiday. Thatcher was impressed. Disappointed and irritated as well, of course, but there was definitely a begrudging niggle of appreciation for the fact that the older man had managed to piece together a theoretic lapse in his own presented argument.
"No, I didn’t think it was," Thatcher conceded first with a pleasant smile. It was an outright lie; he always felt that on some level his intelligence, his ability to manage his own life, was being called into question. That despite the endless sea of evidence to support the basic fact that he was capable of bringing himself into adulthood, people still viewed him as only sixteen (and those were the worst words, those small and inconsequential ones: only; just; not), which was why he tried his best to cut those foolish thoughts off at the knees with the sharpest sentences he could formulate.
Now, though, his concentration needed to shift to a more important problem.
"Uh," Thatcher paused. The problem with never actually having attended Ward’s class was that he had no offering to bring to the pyre meant to burn the man. This was an unforeseen complication. The teenager frowned thoughtfully, dusky blonde hair finally drooping a bit as he tilted his head to rest his jaw in the palm of his hand.
It took a few seconds (much longer than normal) for everything to snap neatly back into place.
"Unfortunately, Ward won’t divulge the content of his syllabus to me. I refuse to indulge his megalomaniac tendencies by submitting to having my abilities neutered - which is illegal, by the way - so you’ll just have to take my word that it’s far beneath my intellectual capabilities. Not that I’m trying to get a free pass here, Osei, because I’m not. I wrote Professor Ward two weeks ago when I first arrived, proposing that he give me an itemized list of required assignments so that I could complete the coursework. It’s an arrangement that I’ve already made with Professors Evans, Weymouth, Lee, and Sorrels. The benefits are noteworthy: I can complete the work faster without the distraction of unnecessary lectures and advance to something actually worthwhile, and they avoid the tediousness of having to attempt to challenge me while also dividing their attention amongst students who’ve been rightly placed at this particular scholastic level.”
Thatcher shrugged. “I still see no reason why this can’t be considered a suitable alternative, outside of the fact that Ward’s an inflexible imbecile who won’t even consider it.”
Initially, when George first looked over Thatcher's academic records, he thought the boy was nothing more than a slacker. Smart, but ultimately too lazy to do anything about it. Over time, it was clear to see that it was his arrogance that held him back. He waited patiently for Thatcher to gather his thoughts and present them with the moral indignation he'd come to expect from his student.
From what he could tell, Thatcher greatly valued his freedom and independence, and he thought very highly of his own academic capabilities. However, George did not share his belief that school was strictly about academic competence.
"Respect, Mr. Soddensee." He reprimanded his student coolly. "I understand you are frustrated with how Professor Ward handles his business, but he is still a member of this faculty. If you cannot manage that, at the very least do not actively speak with such disrespect to my face, hm?
"Now, I find it strange that your professor does not give you access to his syllabus, but on the subject of his powers--have you considered the fact his methods are not meant to cripple you, or any other malicious act? Do you find it odd that the staff has allowed him to continue his practices?" The head of house smiled gently as his ward, wanting to redirect his anger through reason. "Think about it, Mr. Soddensee. We are an institution full of uniquely gifted individuals. There are bound to be students who take the easier road for themselves and cheat on their coursework with their powers--telepathy, mind control, the possibilities are endless with creativity. Professor Ward's ability undercuts that neatly. There are merits to his ways, and I'm sorry if you do not feel that same.
"There will come a time when mutants are openly appointed positions of power and influence. Perhaps they will be one of your classmates. Perhaps even yourself. And when it comes time for you to form the laws and regulations to protect our rights and better the quality of life for mutantkind, you must keep in mind the powerlessness that those without our powers must feel. They have lived centuries believing they were the superior species, and when mutants were revealed, they now see their power and privileges threatened. Like yourself in Professor Ward's class, they may feel vulnerable and hostile. If their position is not understood or empathized with, it may lead to disaster. As mutants, we cannot take by force. We cannot use our powers to solve all problems. Your class provides you with the unique opportunity to work as if you were side by side with non-mutants. To understand and work around their limitations with your intelligence. What you could do alone with your powers, you may find that now you must work together with others to achieve. It is about mutual respect and cooperation, Mr. Soddensee. Something that I believe our government sorely needs."
George lifted an inquiring eyebrow. "But if his methods feel so invasive to you, then why not drop the class sooner? It is not our intention to ignore your rights, in fact, you had every right to drop the class if you did not agree with it. Writing the professor two weeks in advance means you should have had sufficient time to receive his answer, which I assume was to deny your suggestion, and yet you continued on with the class. Why?"
eviljezebel:
"Is starting a war such a bad thing?" Jezebel’s eyes lifted to him, curiosity lacing together her words. "There are people out there who would want to hurt us, and they will before they try to understand. That fear you speak of is already there, and it’s enough to fuel the violent actions towards mutants. There are probably some out there right now being tortured by the very people you want us to coexist with. But I don’t think that’s possible. War, maybe. Or complete avoidance of one another. But never coexistence. Innocent lives could be lost in the process of that as well." She understood where he was going with this, he wasn’t wrong in the sense of that was something that should be achieved, but humans were volatile and that alone would be the cause of destruction.
"I suppose I’m just uncertain as to how my power could be used for something good. Even if I could simply touch my cheek and caress your own… there’s not much good with that. It just is." There was no cynicism in Jezebel’s tone, just a lack of understanding. The teacher probably thought she was nothing short of a moron, and she knew she couldn’t help that. The outside world — the world beyond the farm she’d grown up on — was a culture shock to say the least. Even trying to socialize with people made little sense, and she found herself constantly at a lack of things to say. It didn’t exactly bother her though, there was no bitter taste of inadequacy on her tongue. Being alone was just fine, it was much preferred over the life she had once lived.
"You… have a very intriguing mind, professor." Those hazel eyes of her skated over his face, reading the weathered lines that had been carved into his skin as naturally as the water had carved out the Grand Canyon. It was perplexing to think that anything could carve skin in a gentle manner. "You have a very fascinating way of thinking. I enjoy listening. What is your religion?"
"Wars generally should be avoided, yes. Just because we are capable of destruction and ruin does not mean we should strive for it. I'm rather fond of cake. I'd like the keep this world around for as long as I can. There is more to humans than pain and cruelty. There exists a vast array of beauty and pleasures, love and goodwill." Speaking of cake, he could go for another. His adaptive muscle memory meant he had to keep in shape to perform physically demanding tasks his wanted to mimic. And that meant he had to consume a lot of food to fuel his body. At least, that's what he told himself to justify all the desserts.
He understood her skepticism in some ways--many new students arrived thinking they could never control their powers and hurt someone with them. "At the moment, perhaps. But give yourself a chance and you may be able to find other uses for it. Open your mind to the possibilities."
A few of the comments she'd make would have George wondering if she meant something more by them. He wasn't sure how to feel about that, but for the time being, assumed it was safer to interpret them in a neutral manner. "I respect that religion plays an important role in society, but as for myself, my views are agnostic. My family has lived in places all over the world, and I have been exposed to many religions. Enough to feel I should not commit to one, maybe. And what about you?"
violet-donova:
Violet rolled her eyes, this man was the definition of a dad, all dad jokes and laughing at his own jokes. “Of course not Mr. Osei.” She said, an expression of mock innocence on her face as she pressed a hand to her chest as if actually offended by his words. Really, in his class, he may not like google translate, but that was basically all she did. French wasn’t one of her main concerns right now, she just needed language credits. But, she’s not mean enough to say that to his face.
This time she didn’t even try to stop her eyes from rolling. This man is too much, way too different when compared to her own father.
Excellent, his first eye roll of the day. And another! He was on fire today. If only he had a bigger audience to torment. Chuckling to himself, George clasped his hands behind his back. "Right, carry on then. Be careful if you're heading out. I've heard it might rain."
theartfulthatcher:
Thatcher stared at Osei with a blank expression that had once given people an eery sense of misgiving, the depth in his blue eyes the only tipoff that there was a serious amount of consideration going on in his head. If he’d been inclined to gambling, the teenager probably would have been able to make a killing at the poker tables. As it was, he had a solid foundation laid for a future in international mediation - not that he intended to involve himself in any sort of career which involved untangling the tedious disagreements of the general populace.
"It’s beginning to sound suspiciously as though you’re trying to make this more complicated than necessary, Mr. Osei," Thatcher leaned back and steepled his hands on his knee. He tipped his head toward the form. "That satisfies the official requirements needed to promote action. In fact, it’s much more elevated and civilized than what I might have written, had I stooped to the average level of someone of my age group, which would have been that I want out of Ward’s class now, because thatman is an unreasonable, invasive dick.”
A muscle in Thatcher’s jaw ticked as he clenched his teeth together. “Are you gonna help me or not? I mean, it’s just your job, but that doesn’t seem to mean a lot around here.”
George mimicked Thatcher's actions by steepling his fingers in front of his face to hide the twitch of his smile. Clever boy saw through his ruse. Granted, it was a fairly transparent one, but he was banking on the boy's emotions still running too hot to notice. Perhaps a different approach then.
"Your vocabulary is not in question, Mr. Soddensee. I am familiar with your intelligence, and as such, I am responding to your complaints seriously--one of them being that you do not believe you are adequately challenged. As your teachers, we are tasked with educating you to the best of our abilities, and if your needs are not met, then is it not fair to say we must raise the bar to meet you?"
He nodded toward the complaint Thatcher had filled out. "What you have currently provided me with are two main premises that do not correlate to form your conclusion. 1) Your educational needs are not met, and 2) Professor Ward is--as you have so succinctly articulated--a dick. Now based on these two premises, you have concluded that you do not need, or want, to be in his class. Your opinion of Professor Ward's particular personality is not grounds for withdrawal, therefore, the only argument you have left at hand is that your educational needs are not being met." George met his students hostile gaze calmly. "Believe it or not, Mr. Soddensee, I am here to help. If you wish to remove yourself from Professor Ward's class, you must provide proof it does not benefit you and propose an alternative. Should you like to expand your argument, more details are necessary."
theartfulthatcher:
Finally, someone who was actually invested in their job. Were he any less devoted to maintaining a visage of decorum at all times, Thatcher might actually have shed a tear of gratitude for Osei’s infusion of fellow feeling into his professionalism. Though it ought to have been self-evident, the sad fact was that the majority of the staff here seemed to forget that in addition to being educators, they were also meant to be advocates for the rights and dignities of their students.
If more people remembered that, Thatcher thought darkly, measures such as this wouldn’t have even been necessary.
With a hum of agreement, Thatcher leaned forward and tugged the form closer. He helped himself to one of the pens on Osei’s desk with a merry sort of dedication, a cat about to dive into a vat of canary garnished cream. The pen sailed across the sheet of paper.
R. Ward (heretofore referred to as ‘educator’) employs illegal methods of containment within the borders of his assigned classroom, directly violating the primary pillars of basic humanitarian principles.
Educator refuses to take into consideration the varied educational needs of his students.
Educator is unsympathetic to the ethical concerns of his students.
T. Soddensee (heretofore referred to as ‘primary complainant’) is beyond level of coursework and is not being challenged by curriculum.
Primary complainant does not feel comfortable accepting input from individuals who crassly disregard primary complainant’s right to make personal decisions.
Even taking care to use small script, Thatcher ran ot of room before he’d even gotten through half of what he’d hoped to convey. It was disappointing but he supposed that there was only so much that could be processed at a single go. He slid the sheet back toward Osei and then neatly capped the pen.
"That ought to suffice," Thatcher nodded. "Should I sign it for authenticity’s sake?"
To his credit, George did actually look over Thatcher's complaints. Looking thoughtful as he reviewed the boy's reasons, a skeptical hum rose from his chest. "You have a start of a good case here, but--" George made a small shrug with his mouth, tilting his head to the side. "Professor Ward is known to get his way." Not wanting to oversell it, he simply rubbed the short beard along his jaw.
Retrieving blank paper this time, he offered it to Thatcher. "It may help to specifically list your grievances so that the appropriate action can be taken. Illegal methods of containment can be very broad, you see. Success is in the details, Mr. Soddensee. Should you have enough room to elaborate the various educational needs that apply to you, I have a better chance of pushing this through the proper channels to find something suitable."
If the boy actually took the bait, George would shout hallelujah for a day and a half. There was so much that Thatcher's young mind had the potential for--so much good he could accomplish. His natural intelligence and ability with languages could one day unite mutants and non-mutants on a global scale. If only he would start to work with his instructors rather than against him...
theartfulthatcher:
"No, that would be redundant," Thatcher replied instantly, oblivious to Osei’s delicate sarcasm. The boy blew out a curt chuff of breath, hands rising to rake through his hair - which explained the state of it - and paced to the window and back. There was a frenetic sort of energy humming around the boy. Thatcher felt as if there was a fire in his belly and he reveled in it: the burn of righteous indignation, what a sweet curl of emotion.
He twisted suddenly and loped back toward the desk. Jesus, who the hell had decorated this place? Frowning, Thatcher pushed aside the inconvenient lamp so that he had a clear view of Osei.
"You’re head of house, you can support my decision and issue an official recommendation for a withdrawal" Thatcher said. He waved a hand through the air, forestalling any protests. "I already checked, if you’ve any concerns I can email you the relevant passages from the Academy’s administrative policies volume. So," eyes bright with a furious determination, Thatcher sat back in one of the chairs placed before the desk, "when can I expect to have a new class schedule issued?"
If only Thatcher applied the same fervor to his studies.
"Ah." George nodded understandly. "Well, if the administrative policies volume says so..." He rummaged around his desk for the petition for withdrawal form along with a pen. Looking over it casually, the man made a marking on the paper and passed it over to the student. On it, the section titled "Reasons" had been circled in blue ink. "If you could just fill out that bit for me, we'll be well on our way."
Leaning back in his chair, George settled in nice and comfortably for the next bit of comedic gold. He was half-tempted to turn on his ability and respond with Raleigh's mannerisms. It gave him a good chuckle in his head.
eviljezebel:
They came from somewhere. She’d learned to like that idea; coming to Morgana she’d learned things like the Big Bang and evolution. Those concepts were so eye-opening to Jezebel — the idea that stars collapsed into themselves and exploded, died, to create life, it made the concept of her existence something she could more easily grasp onto. The thought that these powers came from somewhere too made them easier to accept.
His suggestion that she had the ability to do more was also baffling to her. There was a type of ineptness that stayed in Jezebel’s mind despite how she had hold of something so many people didn’t. Years of pain were enough to beat a girl down to numbness, and she didn’t really understand the reality of potential she could possible have.
"Does it not… work in the sense of a spiritual or… cosmic balance? When someone has sinned, they are to be sent to Hell. God does not forgive sinners that besmirch His good name or the things He has built. God punishes to protect the people He has created, and those who do not obey will suffer." She blinked, her fingers curling around the pentagram that hung low on her chest, almost like a type of support she needed to keep herself together. "When one only uses their power for malicious intent… for… revenge… to hurt others… wouldn’t He… or whatever Voodoo spirits… keep such power from developing further. To keep balance? Wouldn’t people who don’t use their power responsibly not be able to use it for the good things you speak of?”
George listened carefully to her confusion, getting a better idea of what this particular student faced prior to her arrival at the academy. If she believed in God, it wasn't his place to dissuade her of it, but her assumption that balance could only be kept through punishment was something that he could not let go of.
"Not so. There are spirits as toxic as the people they came from. There is no shortage of them who would lend their power to one who wished to use it. While it may be entirely possible that we live in a world with spirits aiding and guiding us, we are the ones who make the choices. Us. Humans." He licked his lips, trying to choose his words carefully. "No matter what higher power we choose to believe in, it is ultimately our responsibility to exercise our wisdom and decide if we carry out their will or not. Are there consequences for defying a power greater than yourself? Undoubtedly so. But it is still your choice to weather such consequences or defer to their authority. Needless to say, one path is more difficult than the other.
"Indeed, punishment is often a consequence of defying a higher power. That much has been documented throughout history. But within us, there is something far greater than punishing one another. There is forgiveness. There is mercy. And, that, is far greater than any force one can use to coerce a person to your bidding. We are a species filled with mistakes and cruelty--walks from all different paths of life. When we come together, conflicts and violence inevitably arise. But harmony is not achieved through force or punishment. It takes understanding and kindness--a willingness to forgive wrongs and learn about each other in order to come together and move forward as a people.
"As mutants, many of us have suffered unjust, and often violent, discrimination. But if we were to punish those who hurt us in return, what would that accomplish? Putting more fear and hatred into the hearts of others? That would start a war. Hurt innocent people as well. As a teacher, my job is to provide a safe environment to give you students a space to understand yourself and your powers better. It is then our hope that you go into the world better equipped to handle it. To change the way mutants are perceived in a positive manner so that the generations after us never have to face the hardships we do."
By now, the cigarette he lit was all but a smoking stub between his fingers. George leaned back in his seat and flicked it away with a small sigh. "But easier said than done, yeah?" He flashed her a wry smile.
theartfulthatcher:
"Osei!"
The office door burst open like a thunderclap. There had been no warning of an impending storm, nor was there any consideration given to the notion that perhaps someone else had actually had the forethought to make an appointment with the Zeta head of house, but that was the way of recalcitrant weather, wasn’t it?
On cue, Thatcher stalked in and once more employed vicious use of his right hand to shove the door closed behind him. It went easily, probably grateful to put some distance between itself and the irate teen, who looked as though he’d just gone gone ten rounds with a particularly unforgiving gale force wind. Thatcher’s hair was pushed back, sticking up in a harrowing example of true, irritated frenzy, and high colour stained his cheeks.
"I want you to tell Ward to let me drop his class. No," Thatcher’s eyes narrowed and he sliced the blade of his hand through the air. "Don’t ask: command it.”
In the center of the daily calamity that its residents referred to as Morgana Academy, there existed one bastion of peace that George took solace in: his office. He usually enjoyed reading a new book or catching up with a show without interruption when his office hours were over, but today, it would appear that the storm came looking for him.
The man blinked at the lanky young man who carried with him the fury of a tornado that refused to be ignored. George blinked again at the sudden demand. What was he, a genie? Picking up the table lamp to his right, he placed in at the front of his desk between him and a clearly agitated Thatcher before leaning back in his leather chair. "Would you care to restate that in the form of a wish?" He asked calmly with a raised brow.
While he wasn't opposed to granting Thatcher's...request, George needed a little more information if he was to pull a student from a class after the window of time for dropping a class expired. Especially if he were to go over Raleigh's head.
PRIVATE GARDEN // DRIIS (AKA ACTOR IDRIS ELBA)
eviljezebel:
When he lit his cigarette, Jezebel took one out of her pack and let the burning end of his touch hers for a light. She listened contently, though it began to confuse her. Her powers weren’t religion, they were a mutation, at least that’s what the school had taught her. The concept of religion in general was very confusing, purely because the idea of faith had been the reason for her torture her entire life. Jezebel didn’t know how to feel about religion, and she clung to Satanism because it was a sense of comfort, something that was the opposite of what caused her so much pain, but it was less of a religion to her and more of a philosophy — a reminder of her freedom when she felt weighed down by the past.
"A book would be lovely." The woman gave a nod before taking a drag from the cigarette, pondering the impromptu lecture.
"But what… does all that have to do with my power?" The sentence curled up into the air, similar to the smoke that spilled out from her lips. "I understand it’s the history of Voodoo, but I’m… not actually part of it, am I? I mean. I figure the name of the power is because of my similarity to an object from the religion, a voodoo doll?" She’d done some googling — a really remarkable resource — when she’d found out a little information from the school. “But my power isn’t… for good. No one can feel a touch. Like if I were to focus on you but touch my skin, you wouldn’t feel it. Not unless I were to hurt myself… to hurt you. I figure it’s just… a name to compare.”
He'd been trying to push away the image of her face so close to his when she leaned in to press her unlit cigarette to his. It didn't escape him that some people referred to it as a kiss. Maybe she had little regard for personal space, but it did set his eyes wandering subtly over her beautiful features. The arch of her lips formed a question that he focused on instead.
"Because your power did not spontaneously manifest. Throughout history, you will find mention of our many different mutant powers in some form of myth, legend, or faith. Who is to say some high priests or priestess were not actually mutants? These stories came from somewhere." He smiled gently, his voice rambling in soothing tones.
"You are not alone in this world. You have experienced one side of your powers, but what if there was more to it? What if you could discover another side to it as you master your talents. The key to unlocking different aspects of your power may lie in the practices of old, you see. You may not be a part of the religious aspects, but that matters not. What is important is to know your powers are a part of something that people have great respect for. You are not limited to what you can do now. With time and dedication, who knows what you could accomplish, hm? But how you choose to use your powers is your responsibility. I can only try to provide you with the options."
eviljezebel:
With wide eyes, she listened to him, hanging on every word. It wasn’t normal for Jezebel to get so into anything ever said, she kept herself very detached from others, the gap between her and society as wide as the Grand Canyon. But she couldn’t help but listen, marvel at the knowledge he provided her. Until right then and there, her powers had always been exactly what he described Voodoo: barbaric. Her family were the very Christians those invading Europeans were, and she knew what he spoke of first hand.
"I wish you wouldn’t." She spoke up quickly, her body perking up slightly before she bit her lip and retreated a little. "I just… mean… I know… nothing… about my power except from what I’ve taught myself in how to use it." She pulled her legs up to cross pretzel-style, looking at him expectantly. She really wasn’t used to such intrigue with others, and she felt like she was almost betraying herself for encouraging interaction, but she was yearning to learn more. "I promise I’m willing to hear the lecture all over again in class. I’ll listen just as diligently."
George smiled indulgently, sitting down on the empty side of the stone bench. Meeting students who enjoyed learning was like the Holy Grail for educators. He picked up so much from his travels and studies, and it was a joy to be able to share the knowledge. "Ah...far be it from me to discourage diligence in class." Retrieving his lighter, the man lit the cigarette he had tucked away and took a slow drag, smoke pushed out from his nose.
"Within the voodoo society, they believe that God is manifest through the spirits of ancestors who can bring good or harm. It is a sacred cycle between the living and dead that must be honored in ceremonies. Those in slavery during colonization would ask for their misery to end through ritual, and that included prayers, drumming, dancing, singing, and animal sacrifice." His brows creased in mild concern, and he hoped she didn't think that meant the school condoned animal sacrifices.
Judging from how she lit up to hear that Voodoo wasn't actually evil, George figured that she had very little positive associations with her power. In that case, it was important that she know of the historical context behind her power. "Now, I cannot confirm that this is how your ability works, but spirits are central to the faith. The image of serpents is most commonly used. In Voodoo faith the supreme deity is Bon Dieu. Surrounding that, there exist hundreds of spirits called Loa who control everything--from nature to the health, prosperity, and happiness of mortals. A very practical religion that plays an important role in the family and community. In times of trouble, people go to the high priest or high priestess to seek advice or spiritual guidance. Through channeling divine aid, they offer help such as healing--by use of herbs or medicines passed down through the religion--or healing through faith itself. Voodoo is rooted in teaching a natural respect for the world."
He tapped the cigarette that had burned down quite a ways while he spoke before taking another drag. "You see, voodoo rites and rituals do not only point to evil or maliciousness like most people believe. There are healing spells, nature spells, love spells, purification--even joyous celebration spells. Spirits are invoked to bring harmony and peace, birth and rebirth. Of course, there are more variations of divinity. If it interests you, perhaps you would like to borrow a book or two?"
eviljezebel:
His repetition of the words back to her sounded less like an affirmation and more of a question. She was… probably wrong, wasn’t she? It was just a name for something, trivial at best. She felt foolish, and she figured he thought so too. But the feeling was quickly shoved away as her hair was tucked behind her ear and she numbed to emotions, though she wished she hadn’t put out her cigarette when her lighter wasn’t working.
Nodding at the information, she poked at the cake with her fork, inhaling the cold New Hampshire air. Her eyes narrowed on her thumb, frosting smeared across the side, which she lifted to her lips to suck off. “I believe they title my power…. Human Voodoo. A curious name, though I suppose it’s appropriate. I never knew it had one until I came here. My father just always called it sorcery, though it seemed that is… an entirely different ability here at Morgana.”
It occurred to him that she would be studying under him with her human voodoo powers. Or...she's already been in his class. It was possible, thus far, most of his Personal Physical Abilities class has been theory.
"It is an entirely different ability." He emphasized firmly. "We've yet to cover it in class, but the origins of voodoo can be traced back to the oldest known religions in Africa. It comes from Vodun, the African word meaning spirit. But the structure of it--that was birthed in Haiti during the European colonization. Voodoo is a fusion of various ethnic religions. It is only due to the effort of invading Europeans that Voodoo's noble status--as one of the world's oldest religions--has been perverted and characterized as barbaric, primitive. They painted it as sinful and immoral." George shook his head ruefully.
"There is an entire population of people who revere powers such as yours. Vous deux, you two, you too, they say. The universe is all one. Each thing effects something else. What you do unto another, you do to yourself, because you are the other. Practitioners believe that we are mirrors of each other's souls. The more I research, the more beautiful it becomes to me." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, realizing he probably got carried away. "Ah, but I should save the lecture for class, hm?"
violet-donova:
Since Violet had the next two periods off, she didn’t feel the need to stick around. She was hungry, not hungry for the cafeteria food the school offered nor did she want to make anything. So, she grabbed her keys, her helmet, and just headed out to her bike. Given the heat, she didn’t feel like wearing her leather jacket, so she figured she’d just have to deal with the feeling of bugs scraping against her skin. If only she could mimic metal to make sure that wouldn’t happen. Smiling, the woman touched the metallic part of her keys and mimicked the material. Most of her right arm became brass, a dark gold and a little rusty.
However, hearing someone chuckling only a few feet away from her, Violet glanced up and was a little surprised to see her French teacher. Seeing as she had plenty of time to waste, the woman approached him whilst having a curious look on her face. “Est quelque chose de drôle, monsieur?”
"Qu'est-ce qui est si drôle?" He repeated back to her automatically, raising an eyebrow in gentle reprimand. "That wasn't Google speaking for you, now was it? You know how I feel about that lippy engine. Thinks it knows everything." He smiled, secretly pleased by his own joke. Unfortunately, he didn't have his usual class of victims to groan at how lame it was.
"Nice brass knuckles," he took the opportunity to remark and did a mental fistpump in the air for his 2-hit combo.
eviljezebel:
Jezebel nearly choked on the food she had in her mouth when he mentioned devil’s food cake. “They have cake for Satan?” Those multicolored eyes widened with immense curiosity, sipping from the cup of milk so she could speak properly; chocolate cake made it hard to use your mouth. “Is there… a place where I can buy said Satan food? Doesn’t matter how far away it is, I’m really good at walking.” She walked a good portion of the way up from Alabama to New Hampshire, only hitch hiking a few times. Walking felt incredibly nice, being out in the open was something Jezebel almost needed, even now in school. After being restrained and strung up… the fresh air was like an answered prayer she couldn’t be more thankful for.
Cakes...for Satan? He really couldn't help but squint his eyes at her now, trying to determine if she was just messing with him or not. He looked a bit like he was cutting onions and trying not to cry. "Satan food." He repeated dubiously, but managed not to sound like he was patronizing her. George automatically went to correct her incorrect assumption, but then he caught a glimpse of the pentagram hanging around her neck and thought what the hell, let her believe it.
"Ah, well. Not that I'm calling your willingness to walk long distances into question, no--it's more of...there's the issue of curfew. Unless you possess extraordinary speed or teleportation, I would not recommend going off-campus to buy devil's food cake. However. Kitchen staff would never turn down an extra hand to prep food or clean dishes...I'm almost certain you could arrive at a mutually beneficial arrangement and persuade them to bake more often. Not that they put aside desserts for just anyone." He punctuated this clarification by eating the last bite of his cake with an innocent smile.

This whole situation made her curious. Is this what came with social interaction? Treats? She’d be disappointed to learn in the future that was not always the case, and that along with ones that went very downhill very quickly would be enough to push her back into her shell of cynicism and bitterness.
But for the time being..
The fact that he actually returned at all — especially with what he promised — sat with her. Eyes slipped down to the cake he offered her, and she took it once she’d stubbed out the cigarette on the side of the cement bench and tuck it behind her ear. It felt heavy in her hand, the piece of cake, cold even through the paper. With the fork, she penetrated the cake where it came to a point and took a bite. It was so… perplexing, but incredible all at once. The flavor was rich and demanded to be tasted and experienced, leaving a curious desperation on her tongue for something— ah the milk. She took a sip, cleansing her palette.
"I think that’s the richest tasting food I’ve ever had." She marveled quietly, looking to him and noting how the majority of his cake was gone already. The sight brought the corner of her mouth to curl upwards slightly in a subtle smile.
George was amused by her amazement, which made him smile to see her earnest enjoyment of something as simple as cake. Well, whatever he could do to help students settle in here was fine by him.
He swallowed the bite in his mouth. "Yeah? You'd like some devil's food cake then. Like chocolate cake off the rails. The dining hall might have it from time to time."
