ok so august is absolutely from the perspective of the girl James cheated on Betty with

the repetition of “cause you were never mine” and the part where she says “remember when i pulled up and said ‘get in the car’” 

and then in Betty, from James’s perspective, there’s “if i told you it was just a summer thing” and “she said ‘james get in, let’s drive’”

the teenage love triangle is cardigan (Betty), august (girl #2) and Betty (James)

i think it’s hard for me to compare folklore to any of her previous albums, because to me this album stands like on its own in the sense of like. this is the album you listen to when it’s dark and youre trying to find comfort in something, when youre trying to like catch your breath after a panic attack, when youre like walking alone in nature. like her past albums have all been very unique but also similar whereas folklore is its own piece of work entirely.

honestly this is when it pays to be a taylor stan well-versed in her entire discography, including and especially her early work and unreleased songs. because the general public knows her for her confessional, straightforward songwriting. they’re used to taking her lyrics at face value. hence the many MANY texts i’ve received in the last hour asking me if taylor “broke up with her boyfriend” or if she’s ok. 

but if you listen to early unreleased songs and selections of her work throughout the years, she’s proven she’s great at putting fictional storylines or other people’s stories to song. the emotions are real – they’re hers. but the details of the events are not ripped from the pages of her diary this time. 

letting go of this insistence that every detail of every song is a clue to her personal life really frees us up to analyze these songs and find the universal humanity in them instead of just celebrity gossip fodder.

I’ve been up since 5am to listen so these are my sleepy faves after two listens - the 1, exile, august, betty, illicit affairs and hoax! The album is soooo good she is really flexing on what a great WRITER she is. The themes, the lyrics, the story telling, the imagination is all just 👌 honestly I hope she writes a novel some day it would be incredible!

If you’re upset about what Taylor hasn’t said, I totally get it. There could always be more to say. But here’s something to think about - maybe she feels that it’s better for her as a white person to back off and not take all the attention from the black voices. She did her part; she gave resources, she CALLED OUT TRUMP AND IT’S ONE OF THE MOST FAVORITED TWEETS OF ALL TIME WOOHOO It’s not like we’re wondering what she supports. She hasn’t made a peep in self-promotion since the murders happened. Maybe the “silence” means reverence. Just a thought.
