Gerald Moore Gallery is a new centre for modern and contemporary art set within the grounds of Eltham College, an independent school in South East London. Working with its interesting and unusual context within an educational environment, the Gallery takes a strong focus on learning. This blog is a platform for use to share our projects in an informal and accessible manner.

Images taken during a G.C.S.E workshop with New Haven Pupil referral unit, Greenwich. Students were given the downstairs gallery space at GMG gallery and encouraged to use it as their studio for a day. 

We explored the theme Natural Forms in textiles and contemporary fashion, with responses ranging from paper sculpture, drawings and projection play.

Inspired by our new exhibition IN QUOTES, students from year 6 Eltham Junior school created analogue collages zines using playful collage techniques and processes demonstrated in the show. 

The show is on until the 19th of May and includes work from Rebecca Byrne, Tim Davies, Christina Garrido, Jorge De La Garza, Mike Goddard, Susan Hiller, Rowena Hughes, Ann- Marie James, Sharon Kivland, Linder, Alex March, Holly Stevenson and John Stezaker. 

We will be running a free family activity day on Saturday 28th of April from 2-4pm. Booking advised.

'Folded Plinths' is a Gerald Moore Gallery exhibition with Eltham College Upper and Lower sixth opening on Thursday 18th of January 4-6pm. Following a series of drawing workshops at different sites at the school, each student has produced a drawing on a large scale ready for exhibition.

The pupils have been working with Stephanie Farmer, the current artist-in-residence at Eltham College. Pupils have experimented with folded paper to produce a sculptural reinterpretation of their drawings. These sculptures will be exhibited alongside the original drawings.

Continuing with our Rocks and Minerals project with year 3 students from Gordon Primary in Greenwich, we spent the morning exploring the possibilities of Sculpture with paper. Inspired by the photography of geoscientist Bernardo Cesare, we looked at magnified rock samples as inspiration for some really interesting sculptural responses. The students individual pieces will become part of a larger installation we will install in the next couple of weeks!

A group of Year 3 students from Gordon Primary working on some abstract watercolour paintings. We worked from collages the students had made in the previous week and explored the galleries current contemporary painting exhibition ‘Tender Blues’. Work from artists including: Hannah Turner-Duffin and Poppy Jones encouraged experimentation through mark making and pattern work. We love the variety of work from the students!

Shadow play and sculpture making with year 3 Eltham Junior School. We explored the work of Phylidda Barlow and experimented with found materials. Students were encouraged to work with actions for making, inspired by artist Richard Serra.

 This summer we opened our doors again for a series of sell out Summer art and design workshops for young artists. We experimented with everything from architecture, printing, fashion to drawing machines.

At our Architecture and spatial design workshops we explored geodesic domes and set ourselves the challenge of creating an installation using this design principle. We considered its impact on the built environment and looked to architects such as Norman Foster and the Gherkin building as inspiration.

 In our Future fashions workshop we continued to look at architecture as our inspiration and built wearable sculptures. We had lots of fun adding pattern and textures using lo-fi projection techniques.

MUSCLE WIRE was Gerald Moore Gallery's spring commission. A process driven project, it consisted of research-led residency and exhibition involving two contemporary artists and a diverse group of A Level students from three south London schools.

For one month, Amy Ash and Emma Finn worked alongside fourteen dedicated young people, using Gerald Moore Gallery as their studio space. Together, they carried out collaborative action-based research related to the future of memory. The artists were brought together by a shared interest in humankind's ever-evolving relationship with information gathering and storage. The young people involved in MUSCLE WIRE were selected from the diverse communities of Eltham College, Erith School and Thomas Tallis School.

MUSCLE WIRE aimed to offer an alternative to traditional learning environments by inviting a group of young people to work alongside artists, both leading and assisting in the research generated. Working towards a common goal, the project strived to develop a shared trust in the value of collaboration and the emergent creative process.

In keeping with the gallery's mandate to operate as a space which considers new approaches to learning, the MUSCLE WIRE commission was a space where regular educational hierarchies were dismantled.

Early years project- Year 1,  Dorset Road Primary school 

Session 1 and 2: Surface and Print making 

The focus of todays workshop was surface and pattern in architecture, exploring printing with found materials. Along with earlier Bauhaus design references from week one, children were able to explore exciting work from our new exhibitions, 'Tools for the future' by George Charman and paintings by Jessica Wilson.

Students enjoyed creating their own printing tools from recycled materials, including rollers made from foam piping, adhesive foam before printing onto thin cloth with black acrylic.

Inspired by the bold colours from their projections in week one, students experimented with mark-making adding detail to their black prints using a range of bright neon paints in their designs. The results were fantastic!

"Let us together create the new building of the future which will be all in one: architecture, sculpture and painting" Walter Gropius, Bauhaus Master

Over the next few months I will be working on an Early years and Primary Outreach project with Lewisham based primary schools, Marvels Lane school and Dorset road Primary.

 Exploring the theme of architecture and spacial design, we will investigate ideas around art and design and the importance that the architecture of the school plays in the everyday lives of the students and its teachers.

Each week will see learner led play, discovery and exploration through art and design, as early years and KS1 children explore architects, designers, artists and explore new art processes.

 Sharing knowledge between teachers and children, the project aims to provide a holistic approach to Early years and Primary school CPD for teachers across the year groups.

 Here are a few images from Wednesdays sessions with two year 3 classes at Marvels Lane Primary. We focused on exploring some of the ideas behind Bauhaus textile designer Gunta Stolzl, leading onto some interesting experiments in drawing and mark-making in the space.

Please join us at the opening of our newest commission, MUSCLE WIRE, Saturday 25 March 2-5pm, 2017.

MUSCLE WIRE is a research led residency and exhibition involving two contemporary artists, Amy Ash and Emma Finn, and a diverse group of A Level students from three south London Schools.

Amy Ash's practice moves between curatorial projects, teaching and learning, installation and other forms of making. Amy's work aims to reveal the staging within the construction and regeneration of personal and cultural cosmologies, through explorations of contiguity and situated knowledge.

Using moving image and narrative, Emma Finn aims to transport viewers to uncomfortable places that sit between reality and invention. Marrying hi-fi with lo-fi techniques, she constructs worlds where multiple planes operate independently of one another, reflecting how technology allows us to create our own private heterotopias, as we attempt to communicate with one another.

In keeping with the gallery's mandate to operate as a space which considers new approaches to learning, the MUSCLE WIRE commission is a space where regular educational hierarchies are dismantled. Everyone leads and everyone learns. The exhibition is the culmination of our research and experience together.

Sketchbook Circle 2017

On Saturday the 18th February art teachers gathered at Gerald Moore Gallery from all around the country. The event which has taken place for the last four consecutive years in the gallery, is a chance for art teachers to come together to celebrate the project Sketchbook Circle. This is a project which was established in 2009 and supports art teachers to continue to make their own work despite their busy lives as teachers. Each month art teachers exchange sketchbooks through the post, sharing ideas and developing an interesting creative conversation. The event at the gallery was a chance for the teachers to meet their sketchbook partners, to take part in some excellent workshops and to celebrate the circle through an exhibition.

 Matisse: Drawing with scissors exhibition

 Young visitors explore the Matisse show 'Drawing with scissors', through collage and projection, part of our weekly primary school Outreach programme, led by learning curator Laura Phillimore.  

This Saturday is the last chance to see the exhibition before it goes back on tour. Gallery opens from 10am till 4pm.

 For budding young artists, why not get involved in our free Matisse inspired drop in session this Saturday. Work with our brilliant team of artist educators from 2pm-4pm, and delve into the vibrant world of Henri Matisse through making and play!

A few action shots taken from last nights session with the galleries KS2 stArt squad programme.

The group explored themes from the Matisse show 'Drawing with Scissors' and created playful collaborative 3D cut ups and installations from found materials, props and LOTS of vinyl tape!

Learner led making and play in the session, gave the group confidence in their own thinking and work. We had lots of fun!
