Can I ask where you got your arm tattoos for newt?
[[I actually made those by hand. What I did was I took pantyhose and made arm socks out of them by cutting a hole in the crotch and sewing the ends into fingerless gloves. I then put them on and drew mockups of what I wanted the tattoos to look like.
I then started painting them with fabric paint. Don't use regular paint or they'll crack when you move. It took many many layers of paint and mixing to achieve the colours and shades that were the end result. it took me about 4 hours a day every day for a week and a half to make them. I used a hairdryer to get the layers to dry quicker so I could continue painting.
I started with orange, and the I painted up the various shades of blue and green for the actual kaiju, then I did a red gradient, then the white striping, then any detailing left like the red of the mouth or different shading I wanted on the kaijus.
After that I outlined everything and did the rest of the detailing in black. I did all the painting directly on my arm so that it would be the exact shape I wanted it to be on my body. The end result with the black was this:
Now, you may notice that they are a little different than the traditional newt tats. At the time that I made them, there weren't too many references of what his actual tats were, so I took what I could find, and combined it with my own design. I actually really like them, because now they're a little more personal, like this is what I would get if I were Newt. I know that because I used paint instead of sharpie, they don't look as "tattoo like" but because they're so vibrant and the design is a little different, I like to think it sets me apart from other Newts. I always get tons of compliments on them at every con I go to, so I guess I did something right!
Overall, I'd say they cost me about $15 dollars in materials, and about 48 hours of overall work. WARNING: If you are going to attempt this tutorial, PLEASE FIND A MANNEQUIN, DRESS FORM, OR OTHER KIND OF MODEL LIKE THING TO PAINT ON, PLEASE DO NOT PAINT DIRECTLY ON YOUR ARM. That is what I did, and here's the thing: pantyhose are mesh, so the paint goes through them and it sticks to your arm. you have to peel it off your arm once the layer is dry. It took so much skin on my left arm that I almost got an infection and now have permanent scarring on my left forearm so PELASE PLEASE PLEASE try and find a mannequin to do it on.
