“I haven’t spoken with my mother in quite some time. ...Of course, that’s mostly due to the fact that she’s no longer with us. But now I’m here in this strange city... Regardless, my mother was a fearless leader. She would do anything for our people, but she always made sure she had enough time to spend with me. I have no idea how she did it...Gerudo Town seems to be constantly busy now that I’m in charge. Every night, she would tell me a story about Hyrule, the Gerudo, or Lady Urbosa. She spoke of Vah Naboris being a protector to our people, and of the fallen swordsman of old. I always wondered how she knew so much...but I suppose now I will never know. I hope to be like her someday; a strong presence for our people who can live without fear, while also giving enough love and attention to my own family.”

This seems pointedly about her Thunder Helm, and Riju looks down at the fake helm she’s been holding. It wasn’t her Thunder Helm, no...nor was the stuffed Sand Seal she had Patricia. So naturally those things would be better.

Also, this helm was still too big for her.

“You may be right about some of that... As any replacement for my Thunder Helm could never truly work in place of the real thing. But it doesn’t matter now--because I am the real Chief of the Gerudo, and that will not change until my future daughter succeeds me.”

Which was a very long ways off, she’s sure.

“So maybe...if I, the real Chief, make use of these fake things...they’ll work just as well as the real thing until I reobtain those.”

More than anything, her heart is set on being the best leader for her people (despite the fact that they didn’t appear to be in this city). Perhaps in that sense, it was true. Regardless, the kind words still bring a smile to her face.

  The weather getting cooler again meant a significant increase in people asking him if he needed a shirt, or a coat, or a sweater or- anything, really, but he’s never been concerned about himself in that regard. He does, however, care about two others; Edna and Theo. Matching sweaters would be cute. Maybe he’d even get a bell to put on Edna’s to match Theo’s collar. Then he’d be able to keep track of both of them! A good investment, he thinks.

  Except… he can’t sew. Or knit. Or anything even remotely useful. He can patch his own clothing if he needs but that’s the extent of that, and likely always will be. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

  He’s in the middle of resolving to just go and buy something cute when he’s interrupted by… a small child. She looks about Edna’s size, actually.

     “I’ve got no idea what that means, so probably not,” he says, shrugging apologetically and giving her a small smile. “Was thinkin’ about makin’ some gifts, but I dunno if I can manage it. Was just about to bail, actually.”

So...he’s not a Sheikah? That was disappointing, and Riju fails to conceal her crestfallen expression for a brief moment before brightening again. She was looking to make some clothing, and judging by his current attire, he’d likely enjoy wearing the traditional Gerudo garb. It’s also probably for the best he’s not a Sheikah, because she doesn’t have the slightest idea what Sheikah clothing was...actually made out of. 

“I’d be delighted to assist you in making your gifts as well! Do you think they would enjoy Gerudo clothing? I don’t mean to be forward, but you seem like you would like them as well!”

Since he doesn’t seem to be from Hyrule, Riju assumes she should probably show him what Gerudo clothing looks like, aside from what she’s currently wearing. 

“Here, I have a couple pictures...”

It’s nice that her Sheikah Slate has the proper references to help her in making both vai and voe clothing. She turns her Sheikah Slate for her new acquaintance to see what she’s talking about.

“Is that something you think they--or you--would like? It seems the weather here is slowly becoming colder, but they do help with heat resistance!”

‘I don’t think I ever saw any sand seals before…. that’s a shame. It looks cute.’

Not that he had anything against the horses he’d seen in the valley, though- he loved horses! And the gerudo people seemed to take very good care of their horses, so really, he’d had nothing to say about it. Maybe they had had those seals, and he’d just missed them… who knew?

She was definitely giving him a lot of information, but most key about it seemed to be her question about his name… Link shuffled on his feet for a moment before shaking his head, a bit of a frown on his face. 

‘No, I wasn’t named after anyone. I don’t think we’re from the same period of time in Hyrule… I’m probably from a time a long while before you.’ It seemed like a safe bet, considering he’d only ever met one Zelda who’d been from a time before him, and she’d been from a time before Hyrule had even existed! ‘I’m the Hero of Time! Have you heard of him? That’s me.’

Riju’s beginning to feel a bit self conscious about never hearing of another Link. And one who was the Hero of Time? Oh dear...weren’t there...legends? From before the Great Calamity? Riju feels a blush creeping up her cheeks, and she looks awkwardly down at the “Thunder Helm” she’s holding. 

“I’m...afraid I haven’t.”

Time...and a Hyrule long before her own, that had Gerudo that must have aided this Link. It was nice to know she was upholding a long-standing tradition, but all the same...

“I’m sure there may be some vai in my town who know of your legend, perhaps even my bodyguard, Buliara. But...my mother wasn’t around long enough to tell me of the legends of Hyrule aside from the Great Calamity...I’m very sorry.”

Her life had been dictated by the events that occurred 100 years before, with Lady Urbosa’s death resulting in the Divine Beast Vah Naboris sleeping in the desert until very recently. She wonders if the Divine Beasts were from his time, or perhaps after...

“I...don’t suppose you’ve ever heard of the Divine Beasts? Ours is known as Vah Naboris, and was piloted by our Champion, Lady Urbosa. She died 100 years ago, during the Great Calamity, and her tale was one of the only ones my mother was able to pass on to me before she...”

It’s becoming most vexing to her that there are very few sand seals around, and the ones she could find were wild. Still, with a purple shield made of an unfamiliar material on her back, Riju was hoping to creep up on a sand seal she’d discovered at the beach, and is quietly making her way towards it. She thinks maybe finally she’ll be able to practice her favorite past time again when apparently the seal sees her and dives into the sand, resurfacing about 20 feet away.

She sighs, standing up and giving the offending seal a glare, even as she hears an amused chuckle from nearby. Turning to the stranger, Riju wonders if perhaps he knew how to handle these particularly difficult sand seals.

Or maybe if there was a rental location...

“Are all the seals on this island so difficult? I would hope to find a place to rent one since I don’t seem to have my own...”

Riju wanted to make some traditional Gerudo clothing, as it seemed the clothing provided to her was...different. Uncomfortably different, in fact. So her first stop was going to be to a fabric shop, where she hoped to find the proper materials to make herself (and maybe some others!) Gerudo clothes. 

It seemed she wasn’t the only one in need of proper materials, as she turned the corner into an aisle and happened upon what appeared to be a half-naked Sheikah voe. Which was properly startling in its own right, as the closest to interacting with most Sheikah Riju had ever gotten was the Yiga clan, and also this was a man. Miniature moment of panic over, Riju approaches the man, a bit curious to note that he didn’t have pointed ears like everyone else in Hyrule. 

“You look quite deep in thought, so I apologize for bothering you, but were you looking for materials to make Sheikah clothing? I would be happy to help!”

It’s been a long time since Riju has attended a party of any kind. With Vah Naboris’s presence in the desert, she’d been far too busy worrying about her people’s safety... It seemed she definitely had time to relax ever since Link had come along, and she had no way of getting home, but all the same...she had no idea what kind of holiday this was. It appeared to be a holiday where those in attendance dressed up as someone or something else, which she was pretty sure was just the normal daily activity for Link...

In her recollection, the Gerudo had no holiday like this, but she had been invited, and a message on her Sheikah Slate had informed her there would be people she knew at the party... So Riju had decided to attend. She had made a costume based on images of Lady Urbosa, and was feeling rather proud of herself, but that didn’t mean she felt confident going alone. 

She perks up upon seeing someone in a lovely costume, fine enough to rival even a regular Gerudo outfit, and gathers the courage to speak to them.

“Excuse me, but I couldn’t help but admire your outfit! May I ask who you’re dressed as?”

There are times she thinks about home, about a world she longs to see again, but knows she can’t return the way she is. Most days, however, her thoughts are preoccupied by what’s happening here and the friends she has made here. It’s comforting, to say the least, that even though she stands out in various ways, that others have come to accept her. In turn, Mipha does her best to make a genuine home of this place, even when she realizes the circumstances of her being here.

On her way towards the lake, she easily spots garbs and elegant accessories that are distinct as they are distinguished. How could she forget? Such a proud people they were, they thrived in a sea of heat and sand…a Gerudo, here in the city. It must be a dream, that’s what Mipha told herself, but it wasn’t. She knew better than thinking this was a figment of her imagination.

So with little else to go off of, she makes her way to the unsuspecting young lady, curiosity and hope getting the better of her.

“Pardon me…” She calls out before fully approaching the other. “Your clothes–you are a Gerudo, yes? It has been so long since I met someone from our world, let alone someone like you.” 

The words leave a pang in her chest as she remembers her fellow Champion.

It seemed Riju had lost her way again. This city was much larger than Gerudo Town, and Riju was beginning to feel larger than the entirety of the Gerudo Desert. That was a less than comforting thought, considering Riju had never been past the Gerudo Highlands, but perhaps her perception was still being thrown off by these peculiarly tall buildings and strange Sheikah Slate-like devices. Though speaking of the Sheikah, she had yet to run into a single one...

A voice draws her from her thoughts, and she perks up upon hearing someone properly identify her as a Gerudo. Turning, Riju sees someone that she strongly believes is a Zora. She’d seen pictures of Zora before, and was vaguely familiar with the current Zora prince as he was her fellow royal peer, but Zoras rarely if ever ventured to Gerudo Town. It was likely due to her town’s location, placed right in the middle of the desert, the next closest civilization being the bazaar that was still a ways away. 

“Yes, I am Riju, current Chief of the Gerudo.”

She smiles at this newfound companion, though something about her seems familiar in a way that Riju can’t quite place... She looked a bit like Sidon, didn’t she? Though perhaps that was because Sidon was the Zora that Riju was most familiar with... Still, the blue cloth she wore also seemed to remind Riju of something or someone. 

“Pardon me for asking--but the Hyrule you are from, there’s a Prince Sidon, correct?”

Riju figured it was worth the possibly peculiar question, but she had met someone from a Hyrule that was not the same as her own, and Riju was filled with an odd desperation to find others that knew that same world as her, and possibly the same Gerudo.

Riju has never been in a place without sand. In the very short time she had been alive (particularly compared to her Zora peer, who was nearly a century her elder), she had never even left the Gerudo Desert. The furthest she’d gone from Gerudo Town were the lookout point, Vah Naboris, and once when she recalls her mother took her to the bazaar. 

Now, as chief, she hardly has time to leave Gerudo Town, let alone the desert. So being here, in this strange city on an island, Riju is understandably a bit out of her depth. She wonders who would even be available here for her to turn to for help, until it seems a blessing from the goddess herself is dropped in her lap.

“Link!” 

There’s no way she could mistake that bright blue tunic, particularly with that unique design. At least it’s her Link this time, though this particular Link being “hers” is still something rather odd she’s having a hard time grasping. Perhaps he would know more about this strange place and any others who claim to be from a Hyrule similar to their own, but with a different Link and Zelda.

She only manages to refrain from throwing herself upon him in relief because she has a position to uphold as the Chief of the Gerudo, and such actions would be unbecoming. Particularly in public. Still, she does wish rather badly to hug him, just to reassure her that he’s here.  

“I’m so glad to see you! I was beginning to fear I was alone here... You haven’t seen Buliara, have you? Or...Patricia? I haven’t come across a single Gerudo I know, and it’s becoming very disheartening...”

It seemed there were more voe in this city than Riju had ever seen in her life. Which...to be honest, wasn’t surprising, but it was a little unnerving. She had managed to deposit her “Thunder Helm” in her living quarters, along with (reluctantly) her replacement Patricia. Now, she was wandering around with something very similar to the Sheikah Slate, attempting to find the place she’d be most likely to find sand seals in lieu of a desert: the beach.

She definitely wonders about the people who brought her here. What an advanced civilization they must be to offer everyone who came here a Sheikah Slate! Though it seemed perhaps they were having issues replicating the real Thunder Helm...perhaps that’s why she had a pale imitation instead.

Looking up, she spots a stranger with long white hair--possibly a Sheikah? Regardless, they would likely be able to help her decipher the map on her own Sheikah Slate, so she could find herself a sand seal.

“Vasaaq! Could you assist me in using this Sheikah Slate to find the...” She pauses, looking at the name of her destination. “Spirale Municipal Beach? I’m hoping to find a sand seal.”
