On the first of May, besides the tradition when girls are kissed under the cherry blossom otherwise they will wither, everyone remembers a poem learned in elementary school.
Máj/May - Karel Hynek Mácha (translation: Edith Pargeter)
Byl pozdní večer – první máj –
Late evening, on the first of May—
večerní máj – byl lásky čas.
The twilit May—the time of love.
Hrdliččin zval ku lásce hlas,
Meltingly called the turtle-dove,
kde borový zaváněl háj.
Where rich and sweet pinewoods lay.
O lásce šeptal tichý mech;
Whispered of love the mosses frail,
květoucí strom lhal lásky žel,
The flowering tree as sweetly lied,
svou lásku slavík růži pěl,
The rose’s fragrant sigh replied
růžinu jevil vonný vzdech.
To love-songs of the nightingale.
Jezero hladké v křovích stinných
In shadowy woods the burnished lake
zvučelo temně tajný bol,
Darkly complained a secret pain,
břeh je objímal kol a kol;
By circling shores embraced again;
a slunce jasná světů jiných
And heaven’s clear sun leaned down to take
bloudila blankytnými pásky,
A road astray in azure deeps,
planoucí tam co slzy lásky.
Like burning tears the lover weeps.
A student who had burnt himself in a protest against communism and a priest tortured to death by communists now have an illegal monument on the hospital, where they have died. The installation was made by a great designer and teacher who was angry that those remarkable people were forgotten and that the hospital is in a terrible state.

Tonight’s (Christmas) experiment….. A variation on our classic (Czech) apple strudel. Substitute phyllo dough for puff pastry, and layer rather than roll….it turned out amazing!!
it’s based on karel jaromir erben’s fairytale and it has the best songs and it’s one of my favourite czech fairytales because it’s my mum’s favourite and we were watching it since we were little
Hi! I'm going to study Czech in Brno this summer, for a month—any advice?
Hello! This is rather vague questions... you can read this blog to familiarize yourself with the country/culture (if you view our page on pc there’s whole menu with topics) and perhaps try to learn some basic phrases in Czech.
If the school has a facebook page just join and try to befriend anyone who is already studying there.
Yeah, also it gets pretty hot here in summer and air condition is in some places still a novelty or luxury. There are a lot of people who have it in cars. Only just started installing it in trams. Many Czechs still struggle with this concept and keep opening the windows.
Also one of the admins actually studied here so maybe she can offer some more advice.
