5 reasons you should see the chosen season 5...from someone who didn't like season 4
no spoilers ahead but feel free to private message me to chat about details!
ok...i did not enjoy season 4. well, there were great moments i loved, but in general the writing direction and the focus on boring, alternate tangents really made me fall off so much that i couldn't motivate myself to post about it. i just didn't get excited about some of their choices, both as a lover of good tv or a lover of scripture. least favorite season so far. but if you, like me, were concerned about the direction of the chosen after s4, not to worry, because season 5 parts 1 and 2 (have not seen part 3 yet) are some of the best episodes of the chosen we have had so far.
5. Return to scripture as a main focus. This was probably out of necessity since there are SO MANY things that happen during holy week, so the show really hits those big moments (and those moments in scripture that don't usually get much attention). they didn't shy away from "controversial" parts of the Bible here - they leaned in more and it pays off. At the same time, the background context elevates and makes sense of the biblical events rather than replacing them - classic Chosen goodness
4. The acting really delivers. Certain characters who haven't gotten to shine in s4 finally come back into the spotlight. the emotions are so raw this season, and actors really put their all into this, no softening blows. also, you can tell that the writers have added details to the characters that highlight the actor's personalities and talents and it is delightful.
3. The writing is better than ever. Not going to lie, in my opinion last season had a lot of long awkward scenes with unnatural dialogue that went on and on...the pacing is better this season, AND the structure of this season is ingenious once you catch on to what's happening. the only words i can use for the way they approached this is that it is just heartbreaking while also so, so ... satisfying.
2. No ridiculous cliffhangers. like, don't get me wrong, they leave you wanting more and wondering what's next, but in a much less painful and annoying way. I think ending part 1 of s4 on a cliffhanger after ramah's death was a mistake, especially since the rest of the season was soo delayed (by unforeseen circumstances with Angel Studios, I know). each part of S5 feels not like incomplete parts of story, but a independent journey worth seeing on its own… with an intriguing material left for a sequel (part 2, part 3).
It really does belong in theaters. Like, i am disappointed that it is going to take so long to get the free online version, and it is wayy too expensive to see everything in theaters nowadays, but if you have the time and the means to see any of these parts in theaters, i recommend it. this is not just a tv show on a bigger screen, the structure is more grand and cinematic while still keeping the heart of why we love the chosen.
tldr; 10/10 no notes
