Audition Tips!
We all know auditioning can be scary as heck, and you want to do your best. It is almost inevitable that you’ll mess up at least once. I do every single time. The best thing to do is to just do the very best you possible can! Here are some of my tips to have your best audition!
1. Pick a song that you: a. can reach all the notes, b. know all the words, and c. are comfortable with. If you don’t feel comfortable singing the part of the murderous and sexy Roxie Hart, then don’t sing the song! It seems like a no-brain-er tip, but please keep it in mind. This also ties in with knowing the character behind the song. Is this person angry? Elated? Heartbroken? Nurturing? Scared?
2. To tie into the last one, pick a song that is age appropriate! If you are a theatre baby, please please don’t sing the Hot Dog song from Bullets Over Broadway! Again, this might seem elementary, but you never know.
3. Have confidence! If you don’t think you can get the part or master the dance, that will show in your audition. Tell yourself that yes, I can do this!
4. Smile! Look like you’r having fun, even if deep down you’re scared. If you mess up in your dance, just smile! I promise that most of the time people won’t notice you’ve messed up if you don’t make a big deal out of it. If you fumble the words to the song, smile, and come in the next part you know. Fake it till you make it!
5. Wear something appropriate for the audition. You’ll want to look nice and presentable, but not formal attire. You’ll also want to wear something that you are comfortable in, especially for the dance portion. Usually, there will be a small break between singing and dancing, so you can bring an extra set of exercise-oriented clothes. Another point being dress for the part. I don’t mean a straight up costume, but something that would suggest the character. You want something that could slightly emulate the character to the director(s). When I auditioned for Glinda, I wore a light pink shirt, gold flats, hair curled and pinned, and leggings. The key here being color. I got Dorothy instead, but that besides the point. If you’re auditioning to be Wednesday Addams, bright floral and flashy jewelry would not be your best option.
6. Have fun! It’s okay to mess up! Everyone does. I think auditions are important because it can give you a space to present yourself in a (usually) closed off environment, which can also help you to evaluate yourself. If nothing else, audition just to get more comfortable with auditioning.
Feel free to add on! Hope this helps!
