I like to believe I add nothing of value to my friend group
woke up and someone spilled vanilla extract all over my dash, so as punishment you strange little beasties are getting all the VANILLA FACTS i know:
vanilla is the 2nd most expensive spice in the world (2nd to saffron)
which is why more than 99% of what we call "vanilla extract" is actually vanillin (vanilla's dominant flavor compound) and is not extracted from real vanilla.
luckily, even professionals struggle to tell the difference when it comes to things like baked goods. but there is a distinct difference in non-heat treated products like vanilla ice cream. real vanilla has a more complex, individualized flavor profile.
why is vanilla so expensive? because it is a ridiculously delicate & demanding crop. complete primadonna.
vanilla beans come from vanilla orchids. these crazy flowers bloom for A SINGLE DAY and have to be HAND-POLLINATED in a process that is exhausting, delicate, and requires specialist knowledge passed down over generations.
then, if you're lucky, you get vanilla beans.
which then require months of further specialized treatment.
the entire process takes about a year and can go wrong at any stage
vanilla has been cultivated for over 800 years (possibly much longer). the first known cultivators are the Totonac, an indigenous people of Mexico.
the Aztecs used it as a sweetener to balance out the bitter taste of cocoa. it was popular in a drink called xocolatl--the precursor to modern hot chocolate!
it is only pollinated by a very specific orchid bee!!!
which is why no fruit could be grown outside of Mexico until the 1800s
Edmond Albius, born into slavery, invented the pollination method we still use today--launching a global industry when he was just 12 years old.
today, the majority of the world's vanilla is grown in Madagascar
if you want real vanilla, read the labels carefully--it's harder to find than you think!
in conclusion, those tiny black specks you see in fancy vanilla ice cream? those are vanilla bean seeds! itty bitty orchid seeds!!! they are delicious and also a PRISSY BITCH!

me. me when a poem says something ive felt before
Opens my palm to show you a bird man
Have my OC, Weiro 🦜
Ever since I learnt bout angel tiers as a kid I always wanted to draw em all but only now did i get around to it-
Wanted to have it where they progressively get more abstract and inhuman the higher the tier goes cause who doesnt love a lil cosmic horror? I also took some liberties with the descriptions of all the angels cause lotta them kind of overlap and sound similar.
everytime an app asks me for a review i feel so scared when i decline because i feel like the app will somehow just become worse
the unbelievable feeling of knowing that you are loved as much as you love
orv drawns
online friends are just. i miss you like we’ve met before. you know my family inside and out and none of them know you. the ocean is achingly big but you know i’d cross it for you. you text me good morning as i finish dinner. i wish you could come over for dinner. we have a hundred plans of things to do together and they all feel so far away. i love you as if you were here. for now i’ll love you from here.
To all my friends from far away
growing jealous and resentful because i will never make my wife laugh as hard as those little guys’ asses in princess mononoke
when we watched this together she laughed for like 10 minutes at this dudes little cheeks
unironically one of the funniest things i think ive ever seen on this fucking website and yes im going to reblog this like every other day
we are all very lonely and desperate for friendship i dont think you will really embarrass yourself by unabashedly seeking it out. i think you will find many other people are also looking for it. people will gravitate towards you if you just let them. its going to be fine

How traditional pitchforks were made.
It took 6 years starting from orienting branches
I love this so much
I would very much like to have one of these.
Writers?
If you have a chance, help preserve this nearly forgotten knowledge in your stories somewhere!
Wooden pitchforks are a bit safer than metal ones (little fear of rust causing lockjaw/death if you get poked), and when they’re grown like this, they’re far sturdier in many ways than anything assembled that isn’t metal...and they’re often lighter / better balanced than metal, too!
I still don't know what I'm wearing to the living room New Years Eve... I might not even go.
