I am a Project Hail Mary book lover and my biggest gripe with the movie was the fucking microcentrifuge was not balanced
another bit of characterization i noticed this time around that i really loved was how much grace struggled with finding the words to say during the movie's more serious and weighty scenes. when he's doing the funerals for his crew at the beginning, when he's talking to stratt before the karaoke scene, when he's saying goodbye to rocky, there are these distinct moments where he's trying to get his words out - trying to figure out how to say something that accurately captures the gravity of the situation and the intensity of his feelings - but he can't voice those things out loud because he's so afraid of being vulnerable and acknowledging reality. it's such a subtle but realistic way of depicting his general fear and insecurity as a person, especially since - as he says himself in the movie - he usually never stops talking. but when things get real he has no idea what to say. really good writing!!

How do you think it was for me?
So fucking gifted and everyone agreed
Get him a drink at the bar, this kids gonna go far
Lighting up the sky like a shooting star
He's gonna get his PhD
From Oxford or Cambridge University
And then he'll ignite in the night
Like a light just so bright
Soon the whole world will see!!
Why did you build me up to watch me fall
You lifted me up to cut me down so small
Why didnt you help me when I was underneath it all
You just stood and stared and did nothing at all
Whenever I spoke you didn't listen
Whatever I said you didn't hear
Felt like something was missing
Never knew if you loved or you feared
Wandering out on this road
As if it somehow might fill up this hole
That you've ignored for so long
as if nothing was wrong
Now it's so strong that it's pulling you under

Why is it always about Orpheus turning back foolishly and never about Eurydice following him out of the Underworld, likely knowing she was doomed. That Orpheus went all this way, singing the story of their love, hopeful that he will return her to the surface and finally build their life together— but they will not. She knows her Orpheus will turn back. And yet she still follows him, all the way to the top, because the simple pleasure of seeing his back again is enough for her. Isn’t that a foolish thing to do for love?
