TIME STAMP: 00.00.45 - 00.02.24
Iris’s voiceover:
“Most of the time, it’s like… I don’t know. It’s like there’s this thick, black cloud covering everything. Like we see the world, but we don’t really see the world, you know? We’re all just stumbling around. Directionless. No sense of meaning. No sense of purpose. I know that might sound super depressing, but honestly, I think it’s a good thing. Because it makes us appreciate the other times. Those brief, transcendent moments when the lights flicker on, the black cloud parts, and you see the world for what it really is. And suddenly there’s meaning. Suddenly there’s purpose. If you’re lucky, you’ll experience this once in your lifetime. For me… it happened twice. The first was the day I met Josh. And the second… the day I killed him.”
Breakdown:
“Most of the time… …No sense of purpose.”
This section references Iris before she was love linked to Josh. During her walk through the store during her meet cute before she first saw Josh. She was likely turned off during the time she was held before Josh had her and possibly after a previous love link was broken (depending on if she “belonged” to anyone pre-Josh). It also highlights the difference in programming between being love linked and not being love-linked. The before love link makes her feel unfinished and empty to show contrast between the before and after of being linked. The after, finally having a purpose.
“I know that might sound super depressing… …Suddenly there’s purpose.”
In this part of the scene, Iris finally sees Josh on the other side of the fruit stand aka when their love link starts to connect. She looks towards him multiple times before Josh walks around to meet her, ending up with the oranges spilling onto the floor when he picks one off the stand.
“If you’re lucky... …The first was the day I met Josh.”
This is when they get linked fully. They both laugh at the oranges falling together and Iris starts looking at him with adoration despite having just met him. They introduce themselves and it’s sealed.
“And the second… the day I killed him.”
This is the end of the meet cute. Iris smiles at Josh, and then she wakes up in his apartment (shown later in the movie.) At this point, Iris isn’t aware that she is going to kill him, has no want or urge to do so either. She is incapable of even trying to induce harm onto anyone.
Scene Analysis
00.00.53 - 00.01.19
Iris is walking through the store alone. She has no one with her and there are no other people around her. Since this is a fake memory (shown later in the movie), it is focused heavily on only Iris and Josh being in the store, so he is the only thing Iris would be able to focus on.
It also displays the amount of memory gaps/things that were brushed off or erased with Iris. She had a shopping cart full of food that was never taken home or used, as at that moment she was sitting in Josh’s apartment (later in the movie). But since she is love linked to Josh, her focus was primarily on him, making her not question/forget anything that didn’t make sense.
I also appreciate the attention to detail Sophie Thatcher put into making Iris realistic. As she is a robot, her posture is very straight and naturally stiff, and she walks more with her legs (seen in gif 2). Meanwhile, Josh is a lot more relaxed and moves more fluently (seen in gif 3). This helps show the differences between robots and humans at the very beginning.
00.01.20 - 00.01.38
Iris smells a peach and makes eye contact with Josh, who is standing on the other side of the fruit stand watching her. Iris’s gaze is drawn back to him multiple times before she smiles at him. Most likely, programming adjusting to the love link by making Josh her main focus.
00.1.38 - 00.01.59
Josh walks around to speak to Iris, he grabs an orange from the stand, making all of them fall onto the ground. I feel two ways about the choice of meet cute Josh chose. I find it quite surprising that he would choose something that would kind of embarrass him and cause a slightly awkward situation. Even though he wasn’t directly there, Iris has a memory of him doing that and taking in the type of person he is, I’m not sure he would’ve liked it.
But on the other hand, Josh puts himself above Iris and always has. He doesn’t care how he looks in that memory as he knows Iris adores him due to the love link. And also I think he just picked what seemed most normal to get him and Iris linked quickly. Unlike Patrick and Eli’s (later in the movie), who were at a Halloween party in full costume, a store meeting is a lot more mundane and less out there.
00.01.59 - 00.02.24
Josh and Iris introduce themselves to one another and Iris smiles at him. That is the end of the meet cute memory, meaning the love link is fully finished and Iris is linked to Josh.
note: my headcanon is that van was a hunter turned vampire by taissa !! rhrbhdsh but can you imagine tai caressing van’s hair as she’s about to turn her. muttering “it’s okay, baby. it only hurts for a second.” right before she sinks her teeth into vans neck and van willingly lets her AAA
