ngl the change of phrasing from “if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear” to “if you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage” says a lot about what GDT wanted to do with the Frankenstein creature. I think Mary would have sobbed if she heard that
“I will cause fear” is more transitive than “I will indulge in rage” is what I'm saying. cause whose fear? which does align with how the violence the creature commits is in the name of trying to say something to Victor
meanwhile, indulge in rage. aka you know what, I'll just be mad. madness is the out-group created by the violence that it takes for sanity to exist as the in-group that opposes it. to the sane, anything can look like madness and rage as long as it's unlikable. Victor closes every possible door for the creature that he deems as unlikable to enter the company of the sane, the company of normalcy, the company of oppressors, and Guillermo del Toro, master of turning monsters into friends of the oppressed instead, responds like hey what if I need to belong to the sane and the normal and the likable to find my will to live again. I will be ugly and mad and I will enjoy life anyway
While gazing upon the prop of Victor's angel in the exhibit, I wondered:
does the film seek to imply that Victor tried to recreate his beloved angel in the features of his creation? Echoing the cracks in the wood, while piecing together a face?
'...I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful--Great God!'

Of course it had to be this way. Of course. of course.
If Victor Frankenstein is the shitty, abusive parent, of course the Creature has to be the abused and neglected child but by God, did GdT commit.
He did not have to go this hard.
He did not have to film Jacob Elordi like that, curling in on himself, folding all his miles-long limbs up into the fetal position because no one else will hold him. Watching a leaf float away, out of his cold, dark prison, with nothing short of wonder. Gazing at the camera with his big, soulful eyes. Meeting a wild and dangerous creature and gently feeding it a berry.
Being able to speak only one word, the most important one, Victor, because this - his father - is the only thing in the world to him.
And of course Victor, tragically commonly unequipped to handle the responsibility of parenthood, resents him for it. He built the Creature from the ground, exactly as he wanted, carefully chose every bone, every muscle, every neuron in his body. And yet, when he comes to life, when he breathes, and moves, and needs, Victor recoils. All his hard work, the toiling that drove him to near insanity, was only just the beginning. But this, this slow caretaking, this is different: there's no glory in it. Not the excitement of discovery, not the grandiosity of defying God and nature. This work is repetitive, frustrating, exhausting, and Victor very quickly tires of it.
I do not need to explain the metaphor.
This is usually where the story turns around and says, well, it can't be denied that the Creature is horrible to look at. He is violent and dangerous. Victor may have failed but really, can we blame him?
Well. Yes we can.
GdT certainly thinks so, as he cradles the Creature in his arms and tells him, You're perfect, you have never done anything wrong. I have seen people say that this Creature is too sympathetic, the film lacks subtlety and nuance, but damn, don't we need this. Don't we need to fully and unequivocally sympathise with that which is labeled grotesque, and don't we need to condemn people who fail in their responsibility to those under their care.

i am not articulate enough to make this sound coherent rn. but the cycle of familial violence portrayed in gdt's frankenstein, set against the backdrop of the cycle of violence in society with the constant references to the wars. the creature finding beauty and connection in nature, feeding the deer until it is shot dead. his speech about the wolves and the sheep, how they don't hate each other, it's just in their nature to kill and be killed.
it seems like these cycles will never end but they can. you can turn your ship around. you can forgive your father. you can walk into the snow and feel the sun upon your face. you can, you can, you can.
"Isaac laughs remembering "One time we were looking at the monitor and Guillermo said to me, 'A European would never make this movie that we're making. This is a Latino-telenovela version of the story. It is not a coincidence that my Victor Frankenstein isn't being played by an English person, it's being played by Oscar Isaac Hernández from Guatemala." Speaking in Spanish with his director was comforting to Isaac. "It was truly the first time I felt like I was making something with a family member. Even though its Mary Shelley, and the story takes place in Geneva and Scotland, I felt so connected to my heritage. It bubbled up from the earth. It felt like an ancestral journey for me." the monster's left eye being dead and catching in the light. his spine showing through his jacket. elizabeth's wedding dress being an homage to elsa lanchester's bride. that small streak of white hair in a curtain of black. red gloves. hollander's cane and victor's figurine. the milk. elizabeth's red bonnet and claire's casket. the first thing victor and his child do being reaching for each other, à la the creation of adam. victor becoming the exact person he despised the most. victor going back for his son. forgiveness into death, and forgiveness into life. the cinematography. the set design. the score.
