“Don’t thank me yet, buddy. You can thank me when we actually get results.” As confident as he was in all things, the fear that Ellen Ripley inspired in all human beings was a feeling that even Penn was not entirely immune to. But for the sake of both his friend and his ego, he would do the best he could. Even so, he was all too happy to set aside talk of Ripley for the moment, and instead rib his buddy over his love life – or lack thereof.
For the briefest moment, Penn wondered if he’d possibly found a crack in Garrett’s armour, but the thought was gone as quickly as it had appeared. “I couldn’t agree more, friendo,” he replied, grinning widely. Since he was technically off the clock, he stretched himself out as long as he possibly could, putting his legs up on one of the desks alongside where he and Garrett were sitting. “Besides, what about you and Samara? Is that still a thing, or am I out of touch with the time again?”
Flirting with Sidney was never serious, always just a fun activity to partake in now and then when he wanted to get on her nerves. He was attracted to her, but for the most part it was in an entirely superficial way. Samara was a different case altogether. She was attractive, but there was something more to the way she made him feel. He ignored it most of the time, the little nagging feeling he had to get just a bit closer or the little voice at the back of his mind telling him to tuck the hair behind her ear or touch her face.
She was a nice girl who deserved better and that was the end of it, really. He shrugged indifferently and folded his arms across his chest. “She’s kind to me. A good friend.” He didn’t have many of those. Didn’t want to risk losing the only one he had. “Not much more too it then that,” he lied. Something that came all to easy to him.
