What I find really odd about fanfic in general is that you can almost tell what kind of a person is writing it, you know?? Like some people are really poetic in their descriptions, some people almost drown in the feelings they write, others create dialogue that flows so well it feels like you’re watching real people discuss things in front of your eyes… I just really love that aspect of it, and I love placing writers in a kind of “hey look they’re a descriptions/feelings/dialogue kind of person” box so to speak. It’s such a pleasure reading it when it’s written so individually

Grounded! Chapter 1

Yeah, it’s about time. 5100 words. You can catch up on the outline here, and read along at AO3 if you’d prefer that instead.

Summary: Ichigo, a newly minted lawyer, is fascinated with a jet-haired flight attendant he weirdly keeps running into. Okay, well, that was true the first half-a-dozen times. Then he pulled some favors and found out who she was. What? They just wind up flying together a lot and stay in the same layover cities pretty often. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just a coincidence. He’s never even talked to her really, except to occasionally ask for a drink. She probably doesn’t even know he exists. Or maybe Rukia does, but thinks much the same.

But for every awkward problem in the world, there’s an equally awkward solution! Enter Captain Yoruichi, who’s never met someone she wanted to bed that didn’t wind up there the next morning. When all three of them wind up stuck in an airport after a diversion because of the worst blizzard in a century, Yoruichi happily plies her wiles on Rukia, only to soon discover she’s stepped into a thorny situation. Feeling more than a little guilty, because she really likes Rukia, she decides to adopt a new pet project: she’s going to get the two of them together, hell or high water. There’s just one problem: nothing ever works out that cleanly or easily.

Chapter 1 - So Let’s Raise the Bar

Airports exist as liminal spaces, the constant transience of their occupants leaving echoes in the fabric of their reality. This held especially true in the quiet gloom of a mid-February twilight at Calgary International Airport, where a blizzard howled down from the north and cancelled all flights in or out. The floor to ceiling windows which normally offered a view of the mountains and the international gates instead showed only featureless gray.

Yoruichi Shihōin had sent her crew on, done what she could from the plane, and clocked out after they’d received their final forecast for the evening. They’d been diverted into Calgary on their way back from Frankfurt because of the inclement weather between them and Murakumo.

The low pressure system they were confronting was nearly stationary, and projections estimated several feet of snow by morning, with the wind chill taking temperatures well below zero. The front was expected to scour the area for several days, and it was only going to disperse when a Chinook wind swept in from the west to knock it out.

She, her crew, their passengers, and many others besides were all grounded, and would be for the foreseeable future.

They were fortunate in so far as that the airport had recently finished a massive upgrade program. The terminal had been radically expanded to accommodate international flights and more besides—which was the entire reason they were even there—and it had also gained several in-terminal hotels and other amenities. All of that was good news for them, because based on the reports, even traveling as far as the city proper would be impossible. They’d be there for the duration, and everyone so trapped had been billeted rooms in the hotels—she’d gotten quite the suite.

Yoruichi sighed and turned away from the gray-out. It wasn’t long until sundown. She knew that being stuck on the ground for so long was going to make her tetchy, as she’d long ago developed a distaste for being tethered to any given spot for too long a stretch of time.

She mused over joining the rest of her crew for the evening, but knew they’d inevitably be heading out to drink somewhere in the terminal complex. Instead, she decided to act on a thought she’d been harboring for quite a while already. She was going to seek out one crewmember in particular—one she knew wouldn’t join the others in their giddy celebration of paid time off.

Rukia Kuchiki would have found somewhere to be alone.

A lot of reasons. 

Most of them personal things, but i’ve gotten very few inquiries about them and my fics weren’t well read so I don’t think it’s been anything dire.

hiii! awhile ago you had written an obikin fic and I was wondering why you took it down? it was amazing and even if it was abandoned I would be great just to read the chapter again, but if you aren't comfortable with that its alright just curious about it.

I.... I didn’t think anyone would notice if I took stuff down? Was it the Obikin I posted on AO3 or was it tumblr? 

Either way, none of those were technically abandoned. I just pulled everything because I reaaaally hate my writing and think it’s mediocre shit ^^; Plus it takes me months to get one chapter done and it’s kind of disheartening. 

But I mean, I am considering putting up the chapter maybe after a re-write of it. I’m really attached to the entire story, and I have almost the entire thing outlined already.

Watching the dynamic slowly change between Hannibal and Will while they’re working their way in Europe was always really fun.

Transcendental Orbit. Adam Raki/Lucas. It’s a beast of lovely writing and lovely character interactions. It’s so sweet yet fraught with this great emotional quality.

Riptide and Mortar and Pestle. Hannibal/Will. If folklore and/or magical realism is your thing, they’re worth a look or ten. The atmosphere of both is a delight to partake in.

The Formidable Giants. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker. It’s written with wonderful imagery. The wilderness setting is a highlight and the word building is going to be great.

For the first few weeks, Poe finds Finn everywhere. Where the visits from Jess and Snap happened enough to be habit - once or twice a week with periods where Poe knew their lives were just too busy - hardly a day goes by that Finn doesn’t check in.

Between Snap and Poe, they’ve partially outfitted Finn with hand-me-downs. Finn’s grateful, and honestly he looks better in Poe’s old leather jacket than Poe ever did.

“Hey buddy, you can’t be here,” Poe says, the hair standing up on the back of his neck and his change crackling to readiness in the back of his skull. He could have sounded a little less like a pushover.

Packs aren’t supposed to fight anymore, but Poe knows that the invasion of his pack’s territory can’t be taken lightly - and he's supposed to be on guard out here at the edge of it.

The stranger’s expression turns pleading. He’s breathing hard as if he’d just run all the way here from Bangor. It’s a cold night out there, even for a wolf.

“I need sanctuary,” he says.

In which Finn is a runaway from the massive First Order pack and Poe exists on the outskirts of his much smaller pack, living by only existing, and how they each change each other as they discover the true meaning of ‘pack’.

I’m finally arranging this up on AO3 after working on it for a while and updating in the comments section of TFA-Kink until it was past 20k. Ooops. This will update quickly!

”Overtime”, Merger AU piece. Ship: Rhack Word Count: 2912 Contains: Ableist terms

“Bro, you can’t fall asleep on the couch.”

Rhys cracks an eye to find Vaughn peering down at him. His cheek has tried to become one with the cushion fabric. His leg that’s awkwardly hanging over the opposite couch arm has a muscle ache in it.

“Fight me,” he slurs.

“Dude, I think you’d lose,” Vaughn says and straightens. “Please just go to bed. Your spaghetti limbs will appreciate it.”

“Hey,” Rhys says, turning slightly onto his side, “Hey now.”

“How many aching limbs do you have right now?”

“None,” Rhys says.

Vaughn raises an eyebrow.

“Okay, a few,” Rhys admits. He pulls his legs up and moves to a sitting position. “Alright, alright, I’ll go to bed. I’m already half there.”

“Don’t sleep in your clothes again,” Vaughn tells him.

Rhys waves him off as he stands. Definitely feeling a few aches. There’s pop in his spine as he stretches and whatever sleep he got didn’t seem to have mattered much. He can feel Vaughn watching him intently.

“What?” he asks.

“I know you can’t change your hours,” he says, “but I’m a little worried.”

“The hours are perks of being Jack’s personal assistant,” Rhys mimes in Jack’s voice. “Quality time, kitten, quality time.”

He falls quiet and they watch each other.

“Bad luck,” Vaughn says.

“Something like that,” Rhys says, “but I’m going to bed. I have to be up early. Again. Like always.”

“Night, man,” Vaughn says and Rhys waves at him, shuffling off down the hallway towards his bedroom. He does as asked, changing into sleep clothes and managing to brush his teeth before falling face first onto his bed.

He’s only ever home now days to sleep, and even that’s limited sometimes.

Rhys checks to make sure his alarm is set for the ungodly hour he needs to be awake. He sets multiple alarms. His desire for sleep is tempered by his fear of being late. So far, he’s managed to avoid it. No reason to break that string of success.

 He can hear Vaughn shuffling around their shared apartment, opening the fridge, running the sink. Rhys yawns and turns over, drawing the comforter over his head.

It’s not the alarm that wakes him.

Rhys lifts his head, bleary eyed and confused. There’s an obnoxious sound in his room and it’s not the alarm. He squints as he tries to find the source. It tracks to his ECHO device which is sitting on his night stand.

“Wha….?”

He gropes around for it, fingers missing it the first time. Someone’s calling him. The line is private and anxiety trickles through his ribcage.

Oh no.

He presses connect.

“Good morning, pumpkin.”

Oh no.

“Jack?” He slurs, “Do you even know what time it is?” Rhys technically doesn’t even know, but he suspects. It’s before his alarm.

“Yes, I can tell time, kiddo,” Jack says. He sounds more awake than he should. More awake than Rhys thinks he should, anyways. “Listen, I need you to rally that sweet little ass of yours out of bed and come meet me in my office. Comprende?”

“You’re kidding me.”

“Uh nope, no. I don’t recall making a joke, kitten,” he says, “and let’s be real, if someone’s got good jokes it’s me. I’m a funny guy. But there’s no punchline here. I need you to get up.”

“Jesus,” Rhys mutters and drops his head back against his pillow.

“I’m not asking, Rhysie.”

“Alright, alright,” he says, “I’ll be there as soon as possible.” The line goes dead and Rhys begins untangling himself from the covers. He wonders how many employees have fantasized about murdering their CEO. But for him, there’s a better chance of himself ending up dead rather than Jack.

He rummages around in his closet, smacking his head against the door when he bends over. There’s no patience in his veins and he throws on a casual pair of pants and a hoodie, fighting to slip it over his metal arm. Jack can deal with it.

Soft snoring can be heard from Vaughn’s room as Rhys walks down the hallway. Envy sits deep in his stomach. He weighs if he can spare the time to make a cup of coffee but decides against it. If Jack needs him, he can have Rhys and all his grumpiness.

  Everything is quiet on the way up to Jack’s office. The emptiness unsettles Rhys a bit, and he wonders why Jack would need him in the middle of the early morning. All the lights are off in the foyer to his office. Rhys hovers at the front door a moment, runs a hand through his hair to push it from his face, and then opens the door.

The office is a mess.

There are stacks of folders piled all around and on Jack’s desk and Rhys can see numerous discarded empty cups, which he assumes housed coffee in them at one point. Jack’s jacket is hanging off his chair along with his vest and white shirt.

The man himself is flopped back onto his chair, one arm resting on the chair arm and his face burrowed in the other. Even from this distance, Rhys can see the signs of exhaustion. There’s a chance Jack hasn’t slept at all. His grumpiness shifts to anxiety.

Jack looks up over his hand. “Kiddo,” he greets, “I was beginning to wonder if you’d somehow gotten lost or if you just move as slow as a drunken skag.”

“Haha, very funny,” Rhys says as he approaches the desk. “Not everyone wakes up on a ‘go’ setting, you know.”

“And that’s why I’m the CEO.” Jack throws his weight forward in the chair and straightens.

“Clearly.” Rhys pauses across from Jack. “So, why have I been summoned in the wee hours?”

Jack watches him silently and Rhys fidgets.

“There’s a thing,” Jack says.

“Okay,” Rhys draws the word out. “What thing?”

He swears he can see something settle on the man’s shoulders, something tired, something heavy. Jack pushes a hand through his hair, glancing down at the paper mess all around him.

“You know that idiot Hooker?” Jack says and begins to rifle through one of the paper stacks.

Rhys frowns. “Uh, that’s the guy from the Quality Assurance department, right? He’s the head of it.”

“Not just looks are you, kitten?” There’s a lazily smirk on Jack’s face.

He almost rolls his eyes, but the fact Jack knows this man’s name is unsettling. That’s Rhys’s job. “What does Hooker have to do with this?”

“So, get this,” Jack leans forward in his chair, resting his elbows against his knees. The sudden energy and posture causes Rhys to almost take a step backwards. “This piece of crap is overseeing the newest weapons launch line, and all I hear is ‘Oh, Jack the guns are great’ and ‘Jack, everything is going perfectly like it should because this is Hyperion and you’re in charge’ but that wasn’t the case I found out.”

“Isn’t the line launching in the next day or so?”

Jack stares at him and Rhys swallows.

“Okay, so something went wrong. What happened?”

“Idiots,” Jack says, and Rhys can see his jaw clench. “The gun line had this annoying thing where the reverse recoil was busted. The accuracy started out dandy and then became such shit you might as well just throw the gun at the fucker you were shooting. That would have been more effective, ya know?”

“Okay, but I thought everything was approved? You know, fixed?” Rhys said. “Didn’t Quality Assurance, uh, assure quality?”

“Wow, kitten, figure that out yourself?” Jack asks and Rhys glares at him.

“I’m just trying to figure out why this requires me here, present at, god, whatever time it is,” Rhys says.

The CEO suddenly pushes himself out of his chair, and paces past the desk. Rhys bristles instinctively, Jack sitting is safe. Jack mobile means unpredictability, especially when agitated.

The man stops pacing and stares Rhys down again. Rhys holds his gaze for as long as he can stomach it, then glances down at his metal hand as he flexes his fingers.

A smirk graces Jack’s lips. “It’s no secret I’m smart, kiddo, in fact, I’m fucking brilliant. That’s why I’m the head honcho and you all serve under me.” Rhys almost rolls his eyes. “And I take important things very seriously, important things like guns, pretzels, and murder. But mainly guns. Well, and pretzels. And murder. Okay, you know what, my first statement stands.”

Rhys scratches his neck, raising an eyebrow.

Jack crosses his arms as he faces Rhys. “But look, kiddo, here’s what I’m saying. I wanted to double check all the information and notes and documents and all that business jazz before the launch. Because that’s what good business men do.”

“Okay, you doubled checked everything like a well-behaved and responsible CEO,” Rhys says, “Got it. And?”

“Well, here’s the thing, Rhysie. When I checked the reviews of the gun testing, the kind where they can’t do anything else until I give it a Handsome Jack stamp of approval, I found a review that I don’t remember signing,” Jack says.

“Jack,” Rhys pinches the bridge of his nose. “You see bunches of documents a day. Half the time I ask if you remember something, you tell me no, and I quote, ‘Kitten, do I look like the kind of person who remembers all the mundane details?’ because I remember that quite distinctly being said.”

Jack snorts. “Pumpkin, did it ever occur to your pea-brain that watching your feathers being ruffled is hella funny?”

Rhys mouth gapes.

“If you’d stop interrupting with pointless stuff, I’d tell you what’s up,” Jack says, “Look, this is something I’d remember. Because it was the review for that reverse recoil fuck-up being fixed. The one that pretty much green lights the new gun line launch.”

A frown settles on Rhys’s features. “Wait, you’re saying there was a forged document? If so, then why aren’t you firing the person?”

Jack tilts his head. “Because Rhysie, usually people don’t stop at forged documents.”

Rhys’s gaze strays back to the desk, where the paper piles still are. Something clicks.

“Oh,” he says. “Oh.”

“Now does your dumb self get it?” Jack walks back to the desk, and throws himself back into his chair.

“God, uh,” Rhys wets his lips. “Yeah, okay. Yeah.” He approaches the desk then. “Where do I need to start?”

“I know that piece of shit Hooker forged the document,” Jack says, “What I need to know is if anyone in the R&D department stuck their grimy fingers in the honey jar with that idiot.”

“We also need to confirm if the glitch in the guns wasn’t actually fixed,” Rhys says, picking up a paper and glancing over it.

Jack levels his gaze. “Ya think, kiddo?”

“Quit with the snide remarks,” Rhys says. “I’m here to help, alright? Jesus.”

The weight of the information sits heavily on Rhys, and he wonders how long Jack’s been holed up in his office, pouring over months worth of information. If things don’t add up, the weapons line will have to be postponed. If there’s one thing Rhys knows about Jack, it’s that Jack takes great pride in the quality of Hyperion weapons. And he won’t let a weapons line launch with problems and allow Hyperion to get a bad reputation.

Well, worse than its normal reputation.

Rhys retrieves the extra chair he keeps in Jack’s office and sits across from the man at the desk. He’s never been more grateful for the coffee machine in the office. He considers not getting Jack another cup, as he can’t even tell how many the man’s had outside of the herd of empty cups on and near the desk. But he also doesn’t want to deal with a less caffeinated and even more exhausted Jack.

Jack is surprisingly quiet as they work through all the stacks. His focus is both impressive and mildly alarming.

They pour over the reviews of testing, the financial accounts of budget and expenses, the contracts, the documented process of design. Rhys’s eyes burn and at points, he has to stand up and stretch, take short walks in the office.

He’s holding one of the blueprints for a gun design, thumb rubbing the smooth surface of the page. He wonders what Hooker was thinking. Hyperion is not a simple company to trifle with. Plus, it’s common knowledge that Jack’s method of dealing with offenses tends to be extreme. And permanent. Hooker has to be aware of that.

“Jack,” he says.

Jack looks up from the report he’s been flipping through.

“Why,” Rhys says, rubbing a hand over his face, trying to get rid of the heavy feeling in his eyes, “would someone forge a document like this and more than likely sabotage a weapons launch and think they’re going to get away with it?”

“Because people are stupid, kitten,” Jack says.

“No, I mean, I get that,” Rhys says, “But Hooker has to know he’ll be found out. There’s no way he won’t, right? Once the guns would be launched it’d be obvious. So what’s his plan? He wouldn’t be able to stay at Hyperion.”

Not without losing his life.

Jack seems to mull this over.

“There’s questionable choices, I get it, but I don’t feel like this went unplanned or not thought out,” Rhys leans on the desk. “I feel like there has to be something else. This can’t be the end goal.”

“Maybe so, kiddo. That happens to be why we’re here.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Rhys mutters.

His eyes only barely register the Weapons programming update report in his hands. But he recognizes it, as he’d been in R&D while being given this info in person.

“You sent me down to R&D two weeks back or so,” he says.

“You want a cookie for your good memory?”

Rhys ignores the comment. “According to all this,” he motions to the paper piles, “that was after the glitch had been found. Which I didn’t know about.”

“You going somewhere with this, kitten?”

Rhys sets the paper down that he was holding, still slumped partially over the desk on one elbow. His face warm against his hand. “I remember all the lead developers were really excited. They told me everything was ready to go and it’d be on time.”

Jack has fallen quiet.

“Which means, either they were in on this or they did actually fix the glitch and the fixed model is somewhere else,” Rhys yawns. “And Hooker kept the faulty model for some reason and swapped it with the good one or who knows. It’s too early for this. I think I had too much coffee.”

“You need to beef up that stomach of yours,” Jack says, leaning back in his chair. “You need to have a digestion of steel.”

“Not all of us can be the great Handsome Jack with a stomach that could process a moon shot,” Rhys says.

“Har har, you’re a real funny guy.”

Rhys just flashes a tired grin. They’ve been at this for hours, and there has been timestamps that haven’t added up, and info Rhys doesn’t remember entirely. But he’s exhausted, he’s had too much caffeine, and his focus is starting to blur the words.

He picks up the next page anyways, closing his eyes for a moment to remove the fuzziness from the corners.

Rhys doesn’t remember falling asleep.

But he must have, because someone shoved him and his face is sticking to a flat surface. Something is dragged off his shoulders. He swallows, feeling dry cotton in his mouth. His head hurts a little and he raises it off the desk, squinting.

Jack’s looking down at him, somehow appearing more energetic than Rhys remembers.

“Wake up, kiddo.”

Rhys looks around the office. All the documents are in neat piles now. He sits up, feeling a twinge in his back. “What,” he pauses, “what time is it?”

“Time for you to wake up and stop snoozing on my desk,” he says, “Geez, you’d think you were an old fart or something.”

Rhys curses under his breath. “Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?”

“You were out cold.” Jack slides his jacket on. “Plus, you were bitching so much about being awake I didn’t want to hear it anymore.”

“Did you-“

“Take the rest of the day off, Rhysie,” Jack tells him, clapping him on the shoulder. “You’re pretty much useless to me, and while that’s a nice look with your hair, all natural and rugged, you’re kind of a mess, so you ain’t even eye candy.”

“But-“

“It’s all taken care of,” Jack pushes his fingers through his own hair. “Don’t worry your tight little ass about it. Get up, get your stuff, and get out of my office.” He’s walking away from Rhys.

Rhys rubs his arms. “Where are you going?”

“I got an office visit to pay,” he says, and with that he’s gone.

Rhys considers tagging after him, but as soon as he’s on his feet, he reconsiders. He feels like he’s been dragged through a Skag’s digestive system and he’d much rather sleep. He’s sure Jack will fill him in later.

It occurs to him, when he’s at the door to his and Vaughn’s apartment.

Jack called him.

Rhys weighs the knowledge.

He finds that his response isn’t anxiety, but rather some low-key satisfaction.

And with that, he opens the door to the apartment.

This piece took much longer than I wanted and is not even close to how I wanted it to be. I apologize. 

Will stares at Matthew.

His lips are parted and his arms are paused mid movement.

“Wait,” he says, “Repeat that.”

Matthew is gazing at him with a mixture of amusement and impatience. “I said, next week when your heat happens, I have the beach house all ready to go. We can stay there for the length of your heat.”

Once again, Will finds himself speechless.

“We’ll be all alone,” Matthew continues, “completely undisturbed. We can fuck anywhe-“

“When did we talk about spending my heat together?”

Matthew glances at him, appraisingly. “Well, I just sort of-“

“If you say assumed,” Will says, gaze unwavering.

Matthew snorts. “I just of thought we’d talk about it and prepare in the best case scenario.”

“What’s worst case scenario?”

“You go by yourself to the beach house.” Matthew shrugs. “You’d still have privacy and not worry about being in your crappy apartment.”

Will can’t argue with that. Instead he just sighs and wrinkles his nose a bit. It wasn’t that the thought hadn’t crossed his mind, but indecision was the trouble-maker.

“Do you not want to spend your heat with me?”

Will bristles at the Alpha’s masked disappointment. Anxiety slithers in between tendons and muscle, and he feels he should be concerned over his reaction. But instead he says, “I didn’t say that.”

Matthew glances at him sideways. “So you’re saying yes?”

“I just,” Will pauses, the weight of how far in he is, now nagging at his mind, “I feel like we’re in too deep.”

“In too deep? You’re making this sound like it’s some sort of troubled love story,” Matthew says. “No one cares that we’re fucking.”

Will opens his mouth to respond, but stops.

“Unless you’re ashamed of this entire thing?”

The anxiety is back and Will replies almost immediately, “No, I’m not. No.”

Matthew levels his gaze at Will, and Will knows he’s being assessed for the possibility of lying.

“Look,” Will says, running a hand over his face. “This is all new to me, okay? I came here to train fighters, I didn’t expect,” he motions between Matthew and himself, “this.”

Humor trickles back into Matthew’s face. “Falling for someone is new for you? Wow, I knew I was awe-“

“Stop that,” Will says, but his lips are quirking upwards. “Don’t let your ego go crazy.”

They watch each other for a bit, Matthew’s lips set in a casual half-smile and Will’s expression hesitant but fond.

“So when are we supposed to leave for the beach house?” Will asks.

Matthew straightens, beaming. “Sunday. We’re supposed to leave Sunday. That should give us enough time.”

“More than likely,” Will says, “My heats are pretty predictable at this point.”

“And no less fun,” Matthew adds.

“You don’t know that yet.”

“I guess we’ll find out.” He’s grinning at Will.

Will only rolls his eyes. “Now that that’s settled, how about dinner?”

“I vote for Italian.”

Will tosses him the phone. “You call it in.”

“Sure thing.” Matthew takes the phone and wanders off.

Will watches after him, gaze falling to the calendar.

Five days till Sunday.

  “What was that,” Will barks, motioning with his hand. “What even was that?”

Poe turns around to look at him. “Sorry. I slipped.”

“You slipped because you didn’t balance your stance,” Will says. “This isn’t fighting 101, you know how to hold a stance.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he says.

Will feels restless, he feels twitchy.

It’s three days till Sunday.

“You okay?” Poe asks, eyeing him.

Will pulls in a deep a breath and exhales slowly. “Yeah, yes. Just feeling a bit on edge.”

“Heat?” There’s a subtle smirk on his face.

Will raises an eyebrow. “Not necessarily your business, but yeah. Got one coming up.”

“Matt going to spend it with you?”

Will’s face goes slack. “What?”

“C’mon captain, it’s no secret that you two have a thing for each other,” Poe says, “To be honest, it’s kind of amusing to see you put up with Matt. He’s a cocky shit.”

Will snorts, pushing the nervousness away. People don’t care here. “He is,” Will says, “I guess sometimes it’s charming.”

“Has to be.” There’s a toothy smile pointed his way.

Will nods at him. “Alright, enough chit chat. Try again.”

Poe turns his back to him and assumes his stance again.

He watches as his next round of movements is better, not perfect, but it has the balance between relaxation and tension he wants.

But Will’s mind is elsewhere. Him and Matthew haven’t been the shining examples of discretion, more due to Matthew’s overtures, but Will knows he could have stomped out any interest in the beginning.

Only he didn’t.

And now he’s in his current position. He searches for any trails of regret inside of him, and there are threads, threads connected to what his Department would think of him. But in relation to himself and his personal life, there is no regret.

The anxiety is once more squirming through his chest and muscles.

Will runs a hand over his lower face.

He can’t back out now.

He doesn’t want to.

It’s three days till Sunday.

  Matthew’s face is angled towards the ground, one hand rubbing at the back of his neck.

“What do you mean?” Will asks.

They’re in Will’s office, Matthew sitting on the edge of the desk and Will standing only a few feet away.

The Alpha looks at him, embarrassed. “I have a match-set-up meeting thing. I thought it was going to be earlier but the boss decided on Sunday, so you’ll have to head to the beach house before me.”

Will fidgets a moment. “Well, alright.”

Matthew watches him. “Are you mad?”

“No,” Will says. “This happens. It’s alright.”

“Are you sure?”

Will looks at him. “Yeah, I am.”

“I’ll be there, worst case scenario, monday afternoon,” Matthew tells him. “Best case scenario, Sunday evening.”

“My heat shouldn’t start until mid-week so we’ll be fine,” Will says. “It’s no big deal. Plus,” he grins, “I’ll be able to enjoy some peace and quiet for once.”

Matthew puts on a pained expression. “Hey, now.”

Will shrugs, still grinning.

Matthew pushes off the desk and steps into Will’s space, hands settling on his hips. The Alpha noses at his neck, tongue laving at the junction between ear and neck. Tingles go straight down Will’s spine, a mild spread of heat across his face, and he puts a hand between Matthew’s mouth and his skin.

“Not in the office, I’ve said that before,” Will says.

Matthew gives him an amused look.

“Okay, not when anyone is here,” Will corrects.

“Alright, mhm.” Matthew licks the fingers against his mouth and Will pulls his hand away.

“Just give me the travel info and I’ll be fine,” Will tells him, wiping his hand off. The grip on his hips tightens a bit and then Matthew releases him.

“Alright, but if you need me, you have to promise to call me, okay?”

Will looks at him, a wry smile on his lips. “I’m a mature Omega. I’ll be okay.”

Matthew opens his mouth, pauses, and stops. “I know,” he says.

Will pats Matthew’s shoulder. “I have some paperwork to finish. I’ll see you later.”

The Alpha heads to the doorway, pausing for only a second, before leaving. Will stares after him.

It’s one day till Sunday.

  The beach house is expansive.

At least compared to Will’s apartment.

He’s standing on the door step, key dangling from his fingers, and staring down into the entry way. It feels dead, or maybe just dormant. His suitcase sits next to him and he hovers a moment more, before grabbing it and stepping into the house.

It’s spacious, with lots of windows. There’s sunlight everywhere and he assumes it’d feel more cheery if it wasn’t void of life. The interior is a crisp, clean white, as is the exterior. Will feels like it’d be a source of squinting during the day when peering at it from outside.

The back faces the ocean and is made up mainly of windows and glass. The patio is enclosed by glass dividers and Will stands before the back door, staring out at the quiet beach. There’s a dark wood ladder leading from the patio to the sand and beach.

Will doesn’t think he’ll spend much time out there.

The master bedroom is large enough to make Will raise an eyebrow. Space is luxury, he decides.

But it feels as empty as the rest of the house, and being in it gives him goose bumps. He opts for one of the smaller guest rooms. The walls are closer, more boxed in, and it soothes him. There’s too much open area and being the only occupant is setting Will on edge.

He doesn’t unpack anything. He stays confined to the guest room for an hour or two, then wanders back out into the house.

Will feels lost.

He meanders through the hall ways, looking out each of the windows. He doesn’t fit here, this isn’t where he belongs. It’s the life of someone else, anyone else really.

His small, cramped apartment seems more appealing. At least it’s his own space, built to be his, and bearing his scent.

In the end, Will retires back to the bedroom he selected, shuts the door, and tries to get some work done.

It is Sunday.

And he feels restless.

  There is no sign of Matthew Monday afternoon.

Will hasn’t heard from him all day and he tries to not give into worry. The Alpha isn’t the pinnacle of responsibility.

He’s sitting out on the patio, trying to enjoy the sunlight. But every muscle in him is tight and he feels a desire to start pacing. He considers tromping down to the beach, but decides against it.

The itchiness is back. It’s less physical and more psychological. Will isn’t a stranger to it. Apparently his heat is less predictable than he thought it was. It’s only Monday.

Tuesday was supposed to be the start of his heat.

Will makes a soft inviting sound and the Alpha freezes, posture suddenly stiff.

Matthew’s gaze snaps to Will. “What-“

Will shifts his weight from one foot to the other, the soft, high pitched sound popping up in his throat again. Matthew licks his lips, and he tips off his shoes fast, padding towards Will.

Will surges up into the kiss, locking his arms around Matthew’s neck. He feels hands stroking along his sides, down to his hips and settling there. Matthew holds him close, licking across his teeth and taking the time to savor Will’s mouth.

Matthew maneuvers them through the hallway, a doorway, and Will finds himself being tossed onto an unfamiliar bed. Matthew glances around the room and back to Will.

“Why isn’t your stuff in here?” he asks.

Will recognizes the master bedroom. “It’s in a guest room.”

“Why?”

“Too strange,” he says, motioning for Matthew to join him. Reasoning can happen later.

Matthew strips off his shirt and shucks his pants, then crawls over Will. This kiss isn’t as aggressive as the last, but no less desperate. Matthew’s lips trace down along his neck, and a rough chuckle escapes as he feels Will grinding against his leg.

“Alright, alright,” he says.

Will tries to fumble with his pants, but Matthew shoos his hands away. The Omega lifts his hips, feeling relieved as he’s freed of the material. He can feel that he’s wet already and he quickly pulls his shirt off, tossing it away.

  It is Tuesday.

Will finds himself awake before Matthew. The Alpha still slumbering besides him.

“What?” he says instead.

“Nothing,” Matthew says, “Just admiring you.”

Will snorts. But he falls silent after, gazing back at Matthew. He’s always conscious of the fact Matthew is the picture of desirable young alpha. All muscle and confidence. A good balance of intimidation, power, and safety. Their eyes meet and Matthew’s grinning at him.

“Do I live up to your expectations?” he asks.

Will rolls his eyes and moves away from the sink. He’s beginning to feel shaky again, skin both chilled and feverish.
