Tips on flying & vacationing with your infant-
So through trial and error along with advice from other parent friends, Iāve digested a lot about flying and vacationing with an infant.
When arriving at the airport, I advise you to bring a baby bjorn/carrier to put your baby in. This is because the stroller has to be folded up and go through the security machines. So it is a hassle if you chose to get out the car, unfold the stroller, put the baby in, step up to security, take the baby out, fold the stroller, unfold the stroller again and put the baby back in. Carrying your baby on your own might be difficult for certain parents. This is because you have to go through security as well. You have to take your shoes off, jewelry etc and you also have to make sure your luggage is moving forward towards the scanning machines. After your stuff is scanned, you have to take them off the conveyer right away to avoid luggage pile up. Now this is all going to be extremely difficult if you chose to carry your baby by hand. Right before you are actually about to board your plane, take the baby out and fold the stroller. This is because if you choose to leave the baby in the stroller up until the door of the plane, you tend to cause traffic with other passengers while you guys take the baby out and fold the stroller, again, to be put away.
Second, check in all your luggage. It is extremely difficult carrying your luggage especially when it is time to board the plane cause at that point, you have to carry your baby because obviously the stroller needs to be folded up, again. I did not intend on checking in my luggage at all until we officially got to the airport and I realized that it was going to be difficult. A baby bag DOES NOT count as a carry on but I suggest you pack lightly and pack everything else in your checked in luggage. I packed a few diapers, puffs, formula, 2 toys, headphones and that was it. All other essential items such as clothes, bibs etc were packed in my luggage.
Third, donāt pack too much toys.Ā There isnāt enough space in your seat or even baby bag to pack toys.Pick his favorite toy, bring some puffs and perhaps an ipad. I used an ipad where he watched a bunched of nursery rhymes. Not all planes have wi-fi so make sure to download apps that dont need internet. I advise you to bring headphones as well. NOT EARPHONES, headphones. This is because other passengers do not want to hear nursery rhymes over and over again, neither do I.
Fourth and most important,Ā ear popping. Taking care of the ears is crucial because babies CAN blow their eardrums to death, sadly. Babies do not know to swallow every time their ear pops so parents have to assist them. By doing so, make sure your baby is awake during take off and landing. Give them a bottle of milk or water and if they refuse it, give them a pacifier or some puffs or any type of food they are ABLE to eat.It is pivotal for parents to wake the baby up to avoid blowing the babyās eardrums. When I first got to my destination, I thought everything was ok until it was bedtime. My sonās ears were in pain and he could not sleep and cried all night. I had to give him tylenol which helped his pain subside and was able to sleep. That is another thing, make sure to bring medicine.
Fifth, buy extra space. Im not sure if other airlines give you an option to buy extra space but Jet Blue certainly does. Not only do you have priority boarding on the plane which actually is useful in preparing your baby for the flight such as changing their diaper, but it is helpful when you have an infant on your lap. There is enough room to have a baby sleep on you comfortably as well as for them to stand around the foot space. I HIGHLY suggest buying extra space when traveling with your baby.
The one thing I regret not bringing was my pack and play because I had assumed I was not going to check in ANY luggage. There are mini size travel pack and plays which I already own and should have brought with me. Traveling is exhausting with a baby and sometimes you just want to rest and leave the baby in the pack and play. With my son, he gets bored very quickly. So having him play on the bed and giving him restrictions so he does not fall off made my son go crazy. This is why I wished I brought my pack and play for him to safely roll around and stand up in.
Another thing I regret was not bringing my original stroller which is the Graco 3 in 1 click connect. Instead I bought a lightweight stroller opting for the weight so it can be easier to carry on the airplane. He did not like to be in that stroller for a long period of time especially because the seat did not sit as upright as my Graco stroller which happens to sit upright in a 90 degree angle. Not only that, but it did not shade my baby as well as my Graco so my son being chunky as he is, was very irritated with the heat from the direct sunlight. So suggestion, bring the stroller your baby is most comfortable in regardless of how much it weighs! And if it weighs a lot, it gives you more of a reason to check in ALL your luggage.
Depending where you are going, the weather may vary. We went to Miami and the weather that weekend was 90 degrees. The next thing I regret was not bringing portable stroller fans which again, I ALREADY own. Like I said above, my son is very chunky and gets hot easily. He was not prepared for the heat and he was not liking it all. Stroller fans are a must when going somewhere warm.
It was my sons first time playing in the pool and the beach and I was prepared for that. I brought a floatie with me as well as swimming trunks. Sun block is a MUST and applying it every so often is crucial. Going to the beach, you have to watch your child closely cause my son kept eating the sand. Baby powder is great for the beach to take off the sand on their body and on their hands. You want to make sure there is NO sand on their hands as much as possible because the minute a sand particle gets in their eye, youāre screwed. They can scratch their eye until the sand literally scratches and rips their cornea leading them to be blind. So when in the water, always dip their hands in the water to make sure they dont have sand on their hands, and when on land, take the baby powder and pour it on their hands to get rid of the sand.
Since it was so hot in miami, my formula kept spoiling and I had to constantly throw it away which was so damn annoying but I would rather throw it away then feed my son spoiled milk. Suggestion: bring one of those bag coolers that fit in your baby bag to keep the milk chilled. With that being said, when you are dehydrated due to the heat, your baby is dehydrated as well. So carrying two bottles one with milk and one with water is important. But because of the heat and me not bringing a bag cooler, the water was literally hot water that it would not even quench my sonās thirst. I had to keep buying new water or asking the bar for chilled water.Ā
Overall, this trip was enjoyable. I learned a lot traveling with a baby and I hope you can prepare yourself to travel after reading my tips and suggestions! I am excited to go to Disney in June with my son especially because I feel I will be more prepared!
