Okay, hear me out: what if Doctor Who was rebooted as a pure, unapologetic anthology series? But not just any anthology. Every single episode would feature a different Doctor.
Think about it. They're a time-and-space traveler who has lived countless lives with completely different faces. Why not make the structure of the show actually reflect that?
12 different actors would be cast right from the start to play 12 distinct Doctors. Ideally, the show would run for 12 seasons, giving us a massive, sprawling mosaic of the Doctor’s life and adventures.
Every week, we drop into a totally different era, a different planet, and a completely different incarnation of the Doctor. Each episode is a completely standalone story. No multi-episode arcs, no post-credits teasers, and absolutely zero cliffhangers. The focus is just writing the absolute best stories possible.
As for the companions, they wouldn't have to have a tragic, universe-shattering exit. Since the show jumps around the timeline, we could see a companion come and go naturally. They could travel with one Doctor in their twenties, pop up again decades later with a completely different Doctor, and literally grow old while still being aboard the TARDIS.
Like I said, the first 11 seasons would be pure anthology. But then, Season 12 would be one massive, interconnected story—the ultimate Multi-Doctor event. All 12 incarnations finally come together to face one final, universe-ending threat.
And here’s the kicker for the series finale: throughout the entire show, we never see the Doctor regenerate. But in the very last episode, the 12th Doctor faces his end and regenerates into a 13th Doctor. The show ends right there. It gives you that bittersweet feeling of a definitive ending but with the comforting realization that the adventure never truly ends.
