This post breaching containment has taught me that a lot of people seem to think they can accurately profile complete strangers. For the record, no the fuck you can't.
Sometimes there are moments that make me (native Korean) go "Huh?" while reading fics for K-Dramas. Sort of cultural differences I notice? Let me name a few.
- We don't use imperial units except "inches" for screen sizes. Whenever I see those units, I think, "So how tall/heavy/far is that??"
- We don't keep the first aid kit in the bathroom. For me, it was always the bedroom or the living room, in a closet or cabinet.
- "Yah" is not an exact equivalent of "hey." If you say it to someone older than you, it's a sure way to insult them and/or start a fight. Even if that's not the case, some people might find it offensive to be addressed with "yah," as this can sound a bit "harsh" or "not gentle" depending on the circumstance.
- We don't name children after our family members or close friends. In general, it's a taboo to call someone older than you by their name; therefore, this way of choosing a baby name is a disrespect, not an honor. Because of it, there's no such thing as "xx Sr." or "xx Jr." in Korea.
- "(family name) + ssi" is not an honorific when addressing someone. It's more like "Hey, you!" or "Oi, there!" in a very specific situation. Say, a manager calling one of the workers at a construction site?
- Some dishes take a long time to make, using various ingredients and are for special occasions. Having japchae for breakfast is kind of... heavy, unless it's your birthday. Spicy dishes, such as budae jjigae or kimchi jjigae are more suitable for lunch or dinner, not breakfast. Standard breakfast would consist of rice, (mild) soup and a couple of banchans (kimchi, namuls, fried eggs, tofu, etc.).
- "(given name) + ya/ah" is technically not an endearment. It just shows that you're being more casual with them.
- At cafes, baristas don't write down each customer's name on their cup. Meaning, it's not possible to find out your crush's name this way in a meet-cute situation in Korea. It usually goes like "Customer #xx-nim, your coffee is ready!" or "Your two iced Americanos and one hot latte are here!"
- Korean women never change their family name to their husband's after marriage. Therefore, no such things as "maiden names," "née" or "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." Plus, I think it can be quite difficult to decide which to use between "Ms." and "Mrs." when making K-Drama subtitles.
- Korean names sound relatively either "masculine," "feminine" or "neutral." Mostly, you can guess someone's gender from their name (just like how "John" must be male and "Jane" female). However, it's only a tendency and not always 100% correct. For example, "Si Eun" certainly sounds like a girl's name but is not in Weak Hero.
I might add some more later, but that's it for now. I can't guarantee that everything I wrote above is accurate; it's just what I've thought/felt so far. Anyway, thank you for reading my rambling!
