A young male pileated gibbon on his mother. Both males and females of pileated gibbons are born blond like their mothers. Females will stay blond and develop their black chest plate and cap as they age. Males will stay blond until they approach sexual maturity when they undergo a color change to black, like their fathers.
Happy family. Tuk is grooming domino while her newest offspring hangs on tight. Mom's really do do it all! Grooming is an important bonding behavior between gibbons. Domino laid down in front of Tuk and requested she groom him.
Simpang is an endangered Javan gibbon, also known as the silver gibbon, can you guess why? There are about 3000 gibbons left in the fragmented forests on the Island of Java, Indonesia. The main threats to the gibbons is habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Java had experienced massive habitat loss in the past, but rate of deforestation has slowed significantly in recent years which has allowed the gibbon population to remain stable.
Domino is a male pileated gibbon native to SE Thailand, SW Loa PDR, & Western Cambodia. There are approximately 47000 individuals left in the wild in fragmented forests and protected areas. This is pretty good compared to some other gibbon species, but it is still pretty bad for the gibbons as their population is on a declining trend. The main threats at habitat degradation and fragmentation as well as hunting and the illegal wildlife trade. pileated gibbons have one of the most impressive vocalizations which is unique to this species and I highly recommend hearing their song if you get a chance!
Featured here is Pierre, a Northern white cheeked gibbon. These gibbons are listed as critically endangered, they number approximately 1000 individuals left in the wild. Their primary threat is hunting and habitat loss. These guys are native to Vietnam, Laos, and China, though they have not been seen in China since 1990. Northern white cheeked gibbons are named for their white cheeks, though the females of the species look quite different. They are sexually dichromatic, with females being blond/orange with a black cap and a white rim around their face. As Pierre can attest, they do not show any sexual dimorphism! Parker, Pierre's mate, is much larger than him, and Pierre is rather small for his age. The white cheek song is unmistakable with males starting the duet off with a high pitched tone that is truly unique to them. Gibbons are classified as frugivors, as you can see Pierre fully supports this classification as he is sporting some papaya leftovers on his chin. They are beautiful, intelligent creatures that deserve recognition especially today, on #endangeredspeciesday !
Happy Mother's Day! Here's Phy Gyi grooming Elwood as he sleeps. These Eastern hoolock gibbons had a rough start as Elwood had to be hand reared. Initially Phy Gyi was not producing enough milk and Elwood quickly grew weak. Staff at the @gibbonconservationcenter had to separate them and feed Elwood, who quickly took to formula. Unfortunately, Elwood also developed an inguinal hernia and at three weeks of age, weighing 600 grams, had a hernia repair (herniorraphy). Lucky for all the surgery was a success and Elwood and Phy Gyi were fully reunited when he was 6 months old. This video was taken during their reintroduction process almost two years ago! Here's to all the mothers out there! Gibbon or human, it's no easy task!
Parker is a female Northern white cheek gibbon. Native to northern Vietnam and southern China there are only around 1000 of them left in the wild.
Parker is an adult female white cheek gibbon. White cheek gibbons are native to the forests of southern China and northern Vietnam. They are sexually dichromatic; males are black with characteristic white patches on their cheeks that give them their name, females are blond with a beautiful orange tinge and a black cap. There are approximately 1000 white cheek gibbons left in the wild, mostly due to habitat loss and poaching, the remaining patches of forest are not currently well protected and their numbers are still declining.
Alan Mootnick Jr. A juvenile male Eastern Hoolock gibbon. Eastern Hoolock gibbons are native to the forests in Myanmar. They are sexually dichromatic; males are black with district white eyebrows and goatee, whereas females are blond with a white face mask. Both male and female sing a duet and have a unique characteristic guttural vocalization.

About 98% of their natural habitat has been lost. There are less than 4000 gibbons left living in unconnected forest patches in Java, Indonesia.
Less than a day old and already strong and nursing well! This baby gibbon will nurse for up to two years and will stay with her family for around 8 yrs before becoming sexually mature, finding a mate, and starting her own family unit.
New addition at the #gibboncenter. Phy Gyi, a female Hoolock gibbon gave birth to a female! This is important for conservation purposes as more males are born in captivity than females. So far both are doing great, Phy Gyi is a great mom!

Baby Boo is a 4 month old pileated female gibbon. Pileated gibbons are born blond like their mother regardless of their sex. Before the males reach sexual maturity they start switching to the black coloration that characterizes the adult male pileated gibbon.
