Melanistic variants of the kodkod, or güiña, the smallest cat species in the Western hemisphere. Found primarily in dense montane and coniferous forests on both sides or the Andes, kodkods only weigh about 4.4-5.5 lb. A shy, solitary creature rarely glimpsed by human eyes, the kodkod hides under dense vegetation and in treetops, waiting to ambush birds, small mammals, lizards, and even insects. Prehaps due to its elusive nature, the kodkod was traditionally seen as an ill omen by some Chilean and Argentinian communities. Though they sometimes prey on chickens, kodkods are also excellent rodent catchers and can help prevent the spread of disease.
