The Café Wall Illusion was popularized by Richard Gregory after it was spotted on the tiled exterior of a Bristol café in the 1970s. The horizontal lines appear tilted, yet every one of them is perfectly straight and parallel. Earlier versions were described by Hugo Münsterberg as early as 1894, but Gregory’s rediscovery gave the illusion its modern name. Animated interpretation by @xponential.
