Horst P. Horst experience
Yesterday a group of year 1&2 went to the Horst P. Horst Exhibition which is being held at the V&A. The name Horst P. Horst was a new experience, I had never heard the name or seen any of his work before.
From the start of the exhibition it was apparent to me that Horst P. Horst focused on models mainly. Horst career began in e 1930s, he meets the Baltic Baron George Hoyningen-Huene, star photographer at French Vogue. Huene became Horst’s mentor and partner, teaching him about photography and inviting him into the creative world of 1930s Paris. From this point his career blossoms and goes on till 1992. Stops taking photographs due to his failing eyesight. He died in Palm Beach, Florida, aged 93.
This exhibition has made me rethink the way I look at photography. All his work was done with out photoshop or any of the modern editing softwares, but his work is so clean & sharp. There are technics in some of his images I personally only thought where possible using software. Horst big prints have made me want to see the difference with my work on big print to Horst (quality of using modern technics).
Walking around the exhibition I was very critical and looked at every little detail. There where a few pictures that were out of focus or the focus was on a object in front or behind the model. So i asked one of the tutor what they thought of my findings and I was very surprised by the answer. All the images that seems out of focus where things like the face or subjects hands. The reason was because the cameras of that period used a much longer exposure time, so the subjects maybe couldn't keeps still doe 2 seconds which I find normal. The photographer only had a few attempts to get the perfect picture. In todays photography there is a lot of influence from Horst P. Horst work and style of colour and contrast in his images.
There is so much more to art, after my Horst experience I will be reading up more on Horst P. Horst and other Photographers like him. Dedicate a module on my course to recreating his work might be something I do in the future. On the V&A webpage you can enter the Horst competition #MyHorstPhoto

Golden Ratio
This image was created using golden ratios. It took me a little while to figure out how golden rato works but after looking at other famous examples the process was easier to understand. Thought using something thats very popular at the moment (selfies) to create the final image. Below we have the before/after.
Triangles Composition
This week the group where looking at Triangle compositions, using models to pose and create triangles. A lot of famous artists have used this technic to create well known pictures. Triangles can be used to direct your eye to focus on a specific point in the image.
As you can see each point on the image can create a triangle.
For more impact the final image is in Black and White to bring to charlie Chaplin part of the image to life.

Lighting Styles
Been busy this week editing and arranging all my images from my time in the studio and on location. The group have been looking at different studio lighting styles, ratios and film camera processing.
I will be adding more but here is a taster.
Lighting Ratios & Understanding lighting Diagrams
Its been a busy and eventful week working on different lighting setups.
Below are the different lighting ratios. 8:1, 16:1, broad lighting & short lighting
First Week
First week at college seems to have come and gone in a flash. From learning about the dark room to using Indesign, there is so much to learn before the main project starts.
On day One Barry taught us about a Russian Construtivesim photographer Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko. Rodchenko's work was very abstract. He took a lot of photos from below or above eye level to give a different view and shapes.
This is my image i took to show my understanding.
In Matt`s lesson we used black and white images to develop our own prints using the dark room. This was very interesting because normally pictures are taken and just sent to the printer. This method the pictures where first taken then put into photoshop and inverted. Then the images where printed and we too them into the darkroom and went throw the process of developing our images. Firstly we took photographic paper and placed them under our images with the shiny side up. Then e place a wooden board revealing 2cm of the image and flash the light for 1 sec, then move the image another 2 cm and repeat the process till we have revealed the whole image. the image is the placeced in the first bath for 2 mins, next bath 30 sec, next bath 3 mins and finally rinse for 5 min. When finished take the image out and look at the image and decide which time works best. For my image 5 sec under the light worked perfect.
In Sarahs lesson we looked at using Adobe Indesign for all or projects. Looking at the software at first seemed daunting but after following Sarahs instructions i quickly realised that is very easy to use and most of the shortcuts are the same as Adobe Photoshop. We Took screenshots to show our work flow and help us in future.
