emily-jackson
Emily had accepted that things just didn’t turn out the way they’d planned. Happiness and being content was only temporary, the most challenging moments of her life only just around the corner. All of the anger and pain and frustration she’d felt after he left fizzled out but the damage had already been done, a wall being built.
But there he was, standing in front of her, as if they’d never been apart. The familiar way his words sounded tearing the wall down. He looked pretty much the damn same, but she knew that she was far from the Emily he knew.
“What the hell are you doing here?” she asked, harsher than she anticipated.
emily had every right to hate him and more. the way he had left her was cruel, but necessary. in his mind, he did what he had to for her own protection, no matter how much that voicemail hurt her. “i could ask you the same thing.” the words spilt from him before he realized what he was saying, and immediately felt guilty. he ran his fingers through his hair with a sigh, looking around for any of his bandmates, desperate for backup. atlas was the only one he could see from here, but he was too far for olly to get his attention. “we’re uh...we’re recording our new album here. i haven’t been here long.” he admitted, awkwardly scratching at his beard. this was going to be a long night. he knew emily better than anyone, and he knew he wouldn’t be leaving here without answering for his actions.

As she spoke Archer ground the sole of his boot into the puddle for good measure, nodding at her sentiment as if it substituted for any actual words of reassurance. On his hip, radio crackled with chatter and ten codes, and he patted down his pockets to find his own phone. “Here, I’ll let you use mine.” But the offer was sold short when he found his phone in the same state. “Oh. I guess this thing died on me too. Were you trying to get down to the event? It’s a few blocks over, I can walk you there if you want.”
she found the fact that his phone was also dead to be surprisingly calming. at least she wasn’t the only one. he seemed to be on duty, and she felt a little guilty for taking up his time, but he didn’t seem bothered by it. “wait so i’ve been this close the whole time? i’ve been going in circles for the last hour trying to find this thing!” she whined, dropping her head into her hands. it only lasted a moment though, before she jumped to her feet. her balance was slightly off and she wobbled a little on the tall shoes, but corrected herself easily, brushing the dirt off the back of her dress. “i would appreciate that, as clearly i can’t be trusted on my own.”

Madeline smirked a little, tilting her head to the side. “Scammed a few? Well, I’ll be damned, speakin’ to a silver tongue con artist ain’t what I thought you’d be. A face like that, a face ya can take home to your mama - I thought ya were some baker or somethin’. Good to know ya can’t judge a book.” Madeline laughed, shrugging. “I don’t judge - only the lord himself can and mighty boy, does he got a lot to judge on that I don’t think your little scam the rich scheme would even reach his desk.” She had to laugh at his cynicism. “Oh, yeah? I would say mine is back in Virginia, but I don’t think it’s ever been there. Who knows where it is? Maybe I’ll find it here, in the Keys. People here are very nice.” She shrugged, smiling. “As long as I don’t run into any scam artists, hmm?” She laughed. “Livin’ in a hotel? Why on earth are ya livin’ in a hotel?”
“oh, i’d be a great choice to take home to momma. moms love me. well, most of them, at least.” his own mother being the most obvious exception. selene was many, many things, but fond of her son was not one of them. olly had only ever been a tool to her, another piece in her schemes. he’d been a million different people at her command, and now had no idea who he really was. “oh, babe, if the good lord was judging me, the scamming would be the least of my problems.” he’d certainly gotten into some trouble in his lifetime. “i don’t doubt you’ll find the perfect place to land your heart here. it seems like this town was made for it.” he couldn’t help but laugh at her comment, licking his lips slightly before grinning at her. “as much as i love takin’ money from those who have too much, i do have a day job. i’m a musician, in a band. we’re in town to record our new album, but kitty here isn’t a fan of the hotel life. loves the tour bus, though.”

open to all location: franks deli & liquor
it had been a long day and drew was in two minds of whether to go out and get a drink, or sit with her feet in the pool and drink wine alone. she’d found herself walking into franks before she even realised, hand reaching for a bottle of wine before she shook her head and looked for a bottle of bourbon instead.
“ can you be a doll and pass me the makers mark 46? ”
admittedly, kip wasn’t a big drinker. he didn’t like the way it made him feel, but sometimes, especially the hard days, it seemed unavoidable. so here he was, standing in franks, staring dumbly at the rows of alcohol. he turned at the sound of the woman’s voice and then turned back to look at the shelf. “i’d love to, darlin’, but it seems none of this makes any sense to me. i haven’t bought a bottle of my own in years.”

for: everyone location: higg’s beach
Not sleeping was becoming a fairly common occurrence for Jonah. After a month or so of it, he’d given up on tossing and turning and taken to walking the beach instead, hoping that the fresh air might help. Although, admittedly, after a week of his new routine he’d realised that it was only succeeding in waking him up more. The addition of a flask had followed a few days later. He’d wander for ten minutes, and then plant himself on the sand, lost in his thoughts and the occasional sip of whiskey.
He’d been sitting there for maybe fifteen minutes when he heard footsteps, the sudden sound taking him by surprise. Glancing up to see someone approaching, he did startle slightly. “Shit,” the words came out in a rush, accompanied by a slightly breathy laugh. “I thought I was alone.”
night terrors had plagued kip since his return from overseas, and he had long since given up on the idea of sleeping more than two or three hours per night. he was fueled by an industrial amount of coffee and the love he had for the animals in his care. butter did her best to calm him, and he greatly appreciated her, but once he was awake, he was up for the day, even if that was in the middle of the night. he’d developed a little routine for himself. he packed himself a little breakfast with his thermos of coffee and some special peanut butter cookies for his pup. he would sit on the beach until the sun came up, refill his thermos at his favourite coffee shop, and head to work. it wasn’t much, but it was peaceful.
since the beach was usually empty, he let butter run free through the sand and water, enjoying herself. he’d put her service vest back on her before he left the beach, but for now, they were just a man and his dog. as the pup ran past him into the water, he noticed he wasn’t alone. he left her to play and approached slowly. he gave the man a small apologetic smile when he realized he’d startled the other. “ah, apologies. ‘s a beautiful night to get lost in, ain’t it?” he said with a soft, wistful smile as he stared out at the water.

“He’s all yours, Olly, but just so we’re clear— I am not some package upgrade with this little trip y’all have for this album,” She said, smirk bursting into a grin. It was all games with the man before her, a little banter seemed to be what he needed thus far for getting the best out of him. Even a good comeback was a step in the right direction for some cleverness his band desperately needed. It was her job to figure them out and create the perfect circumstance for inspiration.
“Once? I highly doubt that. What do you define as trashin’ a hotel room, then?”
“oh no, you misunderstand me, babe. he’s the package upgrade that comes with you.” he knew his flattery and accompanying wink would do nothing on the gorgeous blonde, but that was half the fun of it. she terrified him and he was into it. respectfully, of course. despite his arrogant behaviour, he could easily count halen among the people he had a genuine respect for. he had met many women in his long life, but halen was in a league of her own. “trashing a hotel room means anything i can’t charm or fuck my way out of.”

“That wouldn’t be too surprising.” He said easily, used to missing out on things even though he wasn’t usually bothered by it. “Seems like you have it nailed down.” Miles gave her a slight shrug, chuckling lightly. He’d always remember her for that, regardless of what else he saw her doing. “Ah…” Miled reached for his things, tossed a shirt over his body and then picked up his backpack, slinging it over his shoulder. “Why do you prefer texts?” He asked with some sort of genuine curiosity. He’d never really had the choice to choose which he preferred. Miles looked at the blonde, unsure if she actually wanted to follow him or not but he was pretty hungry and maybe she wanted to get some food too.
“i find that people seem to lose all respect for other humans when they’re on the phone. they think that because they’ve chosen this time to contact you, that you have to be ready and available whenever they want to talk to you. text is so much easier, you can answer at your own time. plus, i don’t like talking. well, not normally, at least.” conversation seemed to be easy with him, and since it didn’t seem like he minded her company, so she waited as he gathered his stuff. “you can’t honestly say you enjoy talking on the phone, can you? can anyone?”

Atlas let out a lowly chuckle, “I think the opposite,” he paused as he tuned his guitar, “I feel like Todd would get jealous.” He smirked, at his best friend. He was partially at fault for Todd’s creation: some bet that entailed him getting an ass tattoo of whatever Atlas chose. However, Atlas had been incredibly drunk when it came time to choosing the actual tattoo, hence the awful frog tattoo on Olly’s ass. It wasn’t as if Atlas didn’t have his fair share of drunken tattoos, including Tweety bird on his chest, “I’m down to get something, to commemorate this part of our life.” The two had been through a lot of shit over the last twenty-two years of their lives together. Now they were trying to record a new album in fucking Key West.
“really? he’s never really struck me as the jealous type.” he mulled the thought over in his brain, humming something indecipherable under his breath. “not that i’m all that familiar with him, to be honest. i can’t exactly see him very well.” he chuckled at his own joke, if it was even that. “i don’t know, i guess i just have that itch again, yano? it’s been too long since my last tattoo and there are some fucking hotties at that shop in town.” everyone in this town seemed to be irrationally pretty and olly was just loving it. the tune he had been humming was slowly beginning to take shape in the movements of the sticks in his hands, although they hit nothing but air. his brain often worked while his mouth was occupied, as the sound of his own voice seemed to be the only thing that ever actually inspired him.

poppy had worked tirelessly for three days, but she was proud of the gadget she had produced. she knew nothing about football and training, but she’d done her research in an attempt to make this prototype as useful as possible. as she held out the small box to owen, she felt a strange fluttering of nerves in her stomach. “okay so, it has all the features we talked about, plus i wrote this neat little thing that will track your specific strengths and make recommendations from there. probably. i hope. that’s the goal, anyway.” she flipped the smart-watch style device in her hands, running her thumb across the engraving on the bottom. “it’s secure, so nobody can see your results but you. the passcode is on the back here, and the website is pre-saved in the watches settings. just look for the little ‘stats’ symbol and put in your code.”

“oh my god, i love your dress.” poppy gasped, the words flying from her mouth before she could stop them. she really didn’t like approaching strangers, but that stunning outfit was reason enough to try. “can i ask where you got it? was it around here, if you don’t mind me asking?” she was excited and nervous, some people didn’t respond well to her. poppy was terrible at reading social cues to see if this was a bad time or not, but she hoped the woman wouldn’t be too disturbed by her intrustion.

OPEN TO: Everyone LOCATION: Key West Yacht Club
The club was emptier than usual, only regulars taking their seats rather than any ew faces. Of all the places on the waterfront, it seemed that the KWYC had taken the hardest hit since the storm. After all, it was their name that had been plastered alongside every mourning headline. This was certainly bad publicity at its shit end of the stick. For Bowie, he hadn’t expected to experience it so quickly until he was dealing with the very same summer birds he was growing tired of.
He took a deep inhale of smoke by the stairs, the smell of rotting mangroves joining it. With a huff, he said, “If one more fuckin’ wrinkling kook asks me for a plastic straw, and wants to talk to the damn manager because they gotta have a plastic one, I’ll shove it up their ass. I don’t pay too much attention to that shit, but when you’re starting to develop a hump like that, I’d hope you have some consideration for your distant turtle relatives, for fuck’s sake. Drink from the damn glass.”
the town had grown silent almost suddenly, and it made olly nervous. his instinct told him to run, to get the hell out of here before things got worse. unfortunately he had a job to do and an album to record. so he filled his time with drinking and writing and trying to keep his head above water. he was enjoying a smoke of his own when bowie spoke up, and he shoved his hand into his pocket, flicking the ash off of the still-burning tip. “god, some people are just fucking ridiculous, bitching about straws. fuck, i can’t remember the last time i used a straw that didn’t come from the drive thru or delivery guy.” he scoffed, shaking his head. “what a waste.”
{ @tendiespullum } - aylin
“i’m sure you’re wondering why i’ve called you here today.” it was rare to see kip looking so serious. the vet was basically a golden retriever, and in the years of their friendship, he’d almost never been so severe. but this was no joking matter. in fact, of the few people in town he trusted for their honest opinion, aylin was among the top. “i think i’ve finally got it. i think i did it.” his voice was full of reverence as the oven dinged loudly behind him, indicating that the treasure held within was finished. he very carefully took the pan from the oven, placing the warm, steaming pie on the island between kip and his friend. “the perfect blackberry pie.” and finally, he was smiling again, beaming proudly at his creation.
{ @declanwolfe }
“good, sweet babies! is that your daddy? go get him!” kip cooed at the dogs who’s tails were wagging excitedly as declan entered the vet clinic. he let the pets run towards their dad, turning to face his client with a warm smile. “they were angels, as always. although i think the little one might be a bit underweight. nothing to be concerned about, just keep an eye out and make sure everyone’s eating alright.”
{ @ofthelibertine } - bea
“hey, uh…” kip wasn’t sure if it was how strange the request was or how beautiful the woman, but he was suddenly tripping over his words. the squirming puppy in his arms quickly brought his attention back to the task at hand, however, mewing softly in a demand for attention. “do you like dogs? i’ve got a whole litter here that need experience socializing with people before they can go into a foster family.”
