Well, I know I’m back in London when it starts raining.

Every time I’ve returned it’s been rain or wind but then again, it’s always the winter I arrive. Isn’t there medication for that? Oh It’s not bad. I admit. Reluctantly. I love the rain. I’ve returned from new Mexico and it was scorching. I gladly welcome bitter weather.

Then you must bring it with you then. There is medication for it but I’m on my third once a day tablet and it’s still not working. Okay, when you have been to places like that you welcome the cool down

There couldn’t be a possible better time to run into Gillian than today. Chris had all these random questions that only first parents would ask or be concerned about and knowing that she had done it over and over again with three somehow made him feel relieved. He smirked at her while he put his phone down and out of his mind. It had been more often than not that he had found some interesting things about himself using Google and heaven knew what would be on there about Gillian. Probably something with aliens no doubt. “I can’t believe you have a 22 year old,” he started, “you don’t look the part at all.” It was surprising but then again he had a feeling that Gillian would definitely be the type that aged well and there was nothing wrong with that. “Is it weird having a child out and about doing their own thing with two still at home,” he asked purely out of curiosity and knowing that he might not ever go through that himself. He was lucky that he was fortunate to have the one. And as Chris sat there talking with her he didn’t feel uncomfortable like some people would be around her. Of course she had to protect herself and by distancing herself it made sense. In the end Chris hoped she was as comfortable with him as he was with her. It only further established her personality as being particularly British with her dry humor.

There were times when she didn’t understand how she had a daughter that was 22. Although at the same time, there were moments in her life over the past few years when she was thankful she had her. She was an extra shoulder to lean on, especially when Gillian was rather well known for isolating herself from her friends for long periods of time. “I was about 26 when I had her, I’m almost fifty which is the scariest bit about it.” Luckily, even though she was heading towards that age, she found that she was still getting the roles that she could stick her teeth into. It meant that she had to switch back to television more than film but that was where the roles and the more interesting characters are. “It does feel weird, and I’m sure there’s times when Piper is more a second mum than a sister. But she’s been training to be an art director so she’s been working with me over the past few years. She’s actually spending more time with me now than she did when she was younger. I still feel like I have 3 at home.” Once they had moved to London and she was away from the show, her relationship with Piper moved on leaps and bounds, mostly because she had more time to be a mum.

Gillian wasn’t’ sure how much Chris was telling the truth about keeping up communication with Megan but it was more important with new borns. They grew so quickly and routines would need to evolve with it. The thing was, she could tell Chris this but at the same time, people never fully listened to advice like that until they had no other choice. She could remember when she first broke up with Mark, the communication over the boys had fallen apart and their sleep pattern went to hell along with their attitude. It was only after a few weeks, when they had gotten over their split that everything seemed to settle into how it should be. “Talk show? How the hell did you manage that?” Okay, maybe that came across as harsh but talk shows normally went to TV personalities rather than actors. Maybe he had some strings to pull but it would be easier on him than the hours that they pulled when doing films or shows. “I would offer myself up but according to several journalists I am the worst person in the world to interview.” Mind, they pushed her now days to do TV because it proved that she wasn’t cold, she was just sarcastic and it never came across that way on TV.

“I can’t. I’m stuck in the middle of contract issues. Fox want to bring back to show again but I don’t want to go back to 24 episodes a season, which is what they want. There’s also a film version of Streetcar in production, I’m signed on but they’re having some issues somewhere along the line. I don’t really understand it. It’s weird but it’s nice.” She was enjoying it at the moment, to have time to herself. She had been on holiday with some friends and now she was back home. She got to be a mum, she had given the nanny two weeks off since Gillian could cope for the moment. Gillian nodded her head at Chris suggestion, she had planned on some time for herself but she could do that any other day. Plus, she had vowed to be that bit more sociable now that she was back. “Sure, and you won’t have to deal with me being a backseat cook because I still can’t deal with anything that I can’t just throw in the oven or microwave.” Gillian pointed out with a smile as she stood up and threw her things into the bag that she had brought with her. “Okay, I wish I’d worn heels now.” She added with a laugh now that they were stood up, the height difference was a lot more noticeable.

I’ve got to be honest, the most exciting part of this whole move to London for me is finally getting to find out what the hell a “cheeky Nandos” is. Where will I be able to find one of these mystical restaurants and why is the chicken so supposedly “cheeky” over here?

“Now why would I pick on your height,” he gestured with a laugh, “don’t you think I wouldn’t be insanely jealous over you being able to fit in literally anywhere? The amount of times I just enter a room and hit my head on either the door frame or the light fixture above is countless.” Though some people might think it was strange there their characters on their only project together were heavily involved in the prostitution world of Victorian London he knew it all apart of a day’s work. Plus it made for some fond memories of seeing Gillian in the kind of attire he would most likely never see her in if the project hadn’t come up. It was nice to hear that Gillian’s advice wasn’t something he hadn’t heard before. It seemed like parenthood was one of those things that everyone struggled through until the child was old enough to somewhat take care of themselves. Obviously some were born to be parents and others weren’t and Chris was starting to believe that maybe just maybe he wasn’t born to be. It didn’t help that he had no one to tell him otherwise. Though it was the first time someone had told him to get help. Foolishly he had made arrangements to have some stable job locally while he thought he could be with his daughter whenever her mother didn’t have her and now looking at it he knew that that wasn’t possible after all, not with the amount of time he was with her.

“Because my height is an easy thing to make fun of, I normally have to have this little box to stand on to add a few inches.” Gillian couldn’t even think how many times she had fallen off that box during her career. She would forget she was stood on it and then go to move and end up falling flat on her face. “I suppose height does have its disadvantages but so does being small, I need to ask for help when I’m shopping.” She was lucky if she could reach the second highest shelf never mind anything above it. Also if she was clothes shopping, she couldn’t reach very far back when looking for sizes. But wasn’t this just a case of what you have never being enough?

“Straight away. We were only on the second season of The X Files; Fox had wanted to fire me for getting pregnant anyway. I was back to work 13 days after a C-section. Piper actually mostly stayed with her dad until we finished the show, I moved over here, so did she then picked to go to boarding school just outside London when she was a teen. But the boy’s dad is in London so we can keep it a bit more normal but they have the same nanny with their dad and I. But we didn’t get one straight away with the boys, I wasn’t so busy and Mark could work from home if I was.” Fuck, life had been easier when she was in a stable relationship, at least it had been with Mark, but she wasn’t good at holding onto relationships. She got bored or things just fell apart. “It’s just easier having a helping hand with our careers, especially if you’re not in a relationship. I didn’t want my kids having to move schools every few months.” She wanted them to stay somewhere that they were comfortable, she wanted their life to be on their terms.

“Please don’t google me, I dread to think what comes up. But I have three. Piper, who is 22 and Oscar and Felix who are 10 and 8.” She had never googled herself but she had read interviews she had done in the past and she hated the way they portrayed her. Cold, humorless, dry. She wasn’t always like that; she just took a while to open up to people. It was why she typically only allows herself to do interviews with the same people. When Chris tried to explain the living situation, Gillian nodded her head and just decided to label it complicated. Not that it was a bad thing, which was a stamp she felt like she could put on a lot of her life. It wasn’t normal, but didn’t that make life boring if it was?

“You’ll get used to it. Routine is important but it’s not easy if they’re not settled. You need to communicate with Megan and decide fixed times over things.” It was the only way Chris was ever going to get rest, especially with a newborn baby. Things needed to happen the same time everyday, she didn’t do it with Piper and ended up having a crying baby almost every night because she couldn’t settle. “There are agencies. You tell them what you want in a nanny and they’ll give you a list of people who they think would work. But stick with one, you need to be sure they’re the right person but it doesn’t work if you go through a million nannies in one month.” A part of Gillian had always questioned whether she had relied on nannies too much. Especially when it got to the point where Piper would cry for hers rather than Gillian. “You still need to find the right balance between work and your child. I fucked that up big time the first time around but it’s easier to find that balance when doing films and mini series.”
