AU: In a small town filled with muggles killing each other over fear of witchcraft, Lily Evans, a midwife who has a knack for delivering miraculously healthy babies - a talent she attributes to a loving nature and kind disposition -, has thus far managed to keep her identity a secret.
[it's late - early morning by this point - and Lily is brewing a potion deep in the woods, using the cover of night to hide this practice. Suddenly, a small explosion from the cauldron knocks her over, and as she's righting herself, head swimming, she thinks she can make a shape out between the trees] W-who's there?

Thrown from a distance, I don’t think it would have felt like a warm hug. [rolls his eyes and leans against the back of the bleachers, pulling out another cigarette and lodging it between his lips indicatively] Oh, you know. Rushing to get those assignments in.
[gives the cigarette a dirty look] Didn't you just finish one of those? [stops spinning, grabbing the sabre by the hilt and knocking the cigarette from his mouth with the blade] Ah ha! You might have been on to something. Maybe I should fight crime.

Feeling like all the air had been let out of him, Sirius found himself standing there (feeling like he’s going to float away at any moment and god damn, wouldn’t that be a blessing?). The windowsill was his sticking post; he leaned against it with a weight as heavy as the one that felt like it’d been dropped into his stomach.
In the end, the only thing he could choke out –there was no element of cool to him in this moment, none at all– was a simple and tense: “Okay. Fine. Done.”
She almost saw the change in him, though she didn't bother to try and find any meaning in it. Instead, she pushed it out of her mind. "No, it's not. It can't just be done, you said...." She sighed in frustration, not sure why she cared so much what he felt anyway.
She took a step forward, only then finding that she was able to move again. "Is this...I thought this was what you wanted. I thought...." She moved toward him, stopping in front of him and forcing him to look at her. "Is it me? Did I do something? Did I...make this happen?" She searched his eyes for answers, suddenly feeling hopeful - if it was something she was doing, then it was something she could stop doing.

[begins absently spinning the blade with two fingers] Ah, yes, because dull blades wrapped in electrical tape are so intimidating. [eyes narrow] What are you doing here, anyway?

"I know," Sirius snapped, and it came out much harsher than he’d intended. Accusatory, almost, as if he didn’t know perfectly well who her heart lay with. It was the dream, wasn’t it, that he had standing before him? There would never be any paralyzing talks of commitment or convention or having to feel trapped. Not when her heart lay with somebody else. However, he couldn’t help but fixate on the fact that he didn’t care where her heart laid, because she’d laid down beside him tonight like so many others and it was just his luck to end getting stuck on everything she was.
"I know,” he tried again, quieter this time as he pushed a hand through his hair and tried to just think. That’s all he needed: a distraction, a second to breathe. In one swift motion, he extricated himself from the twisted up sheets and the warmth of the bed and stepped out onto the cold floorboards; he was freezing and he was in just his boxers at this point and normally he would have worried about looking foolish because she was already redressed, but the foolishness bar had been lifted for the night. Or so it would seem.
There was a pack of cigarettes on the windowsill where he kept them –for emergencies, he always joked, and yet here he was starkly in the middle of one– and he picked one up to light if only for the fact that he was still stalling for time. Normally it would have also stopped the annoying shake in his hand, but the cause behind that had nothing to do with addiction tonight. Not addiction to nicotine, anyway. Unavailable redheads were, apparently, an entirely different story. With it in his hand, he felt a little steadier and could finally turn to face her, pretending that she wasn’t gawking at him.
"And I know that he’s my best friend. I love him. I love the shit out of him.” And that was where Sirius should have stopped talking. He should have leaned against the windowsill and left the night hanging on the fact that he’d die for James and dismiss her casually in that way he knew drove her up the wall enough to keep her coming back. But despite the chorus of don’t you dare say it swirling around in his mind, that was not where Sirius Black dropped the line of conversation for the night. “But I love you, too.”
Now that she was dressed and therefore out of things to do, her frenzied shock seemed to fade into something closer to incredulity. She watched as he climbed out of the bed, raked his fingers through his hair, reached for a cigarette (stalling tactics, she thought, and she wished she could hear his thoughts right now), but felt unable to move herself; her feet seemed to have grown roots.
She listened to his speech, short as it was, and tried to think of a way she could fix this, a way to put it back the way it was. Because it worked, but it wouldn't work if he kept spouting nonsense about love. So far, she was at a loss.
Realizing that it'd been a while since he gave his damning confession, and realizing that she'd just been starting dumbly in the wake of it, Lily finally opened her mouth to speak, the words stumbling ineloquently out as she did. "Well. Don't."
