Review on Philippine Contemporary Aesthetics
Renowned art critic Allice Guillermo imposed a significant ideas on understanding what aesthetics is, and stir up many Filipinos in the matter of traditional art that exist here in the Philippines.
Strangely, Filipinos nowadays (perhaps some of them), are easily fed up by Western Culture. Sounds like being alienated to own way of living, right?
However, Allice on this issue gave awakening thought on "Alternative Materials" under her context “Philippine Contemporary Aesthetic". She then cites a solution to fought Western Industry as this became a clique trend. Guillermo imply not only artists, but everyone to use the traditional and indigenous material rather than patronizing from those of the West.
This concern had presented the advantages and relevant of indigenous materials whereas it is no doubt that traditional material is merely accessible than the westernized one since you can easily find them on environment, plus the fact that it is cheaper and nature-friendly.
Guillermo emphasized that we shouldn't really depend on the West instead we can also be rely to materials produce by our natives that is can be helpful to their source of living . Anyway, beside on painting, sculpture etc., we can also show arts in other ways such as in film, without being westernized, these films may featured those events which reflect the current issues faced by Filipino society where many of us could enlightened.
Meanwhile granting as what mentioned above, Guillermo did not limit everyone on material be use, only It depends on what you prefer. But supporting our fellow would be nice concept.
To put it briefly, Guillermo on this view, offers us to go beyond and have a deeper understanding on contemporary art of the Philippines.
In either case we, ourselves must first to embrace our diverse culture and more importantly, Local ones would not be forever are of no quality at all.
