A witch puts a spell on a girl, a sleeping spell that promises the girl shall wake through true love’s kiss. Men come and kiss her. She slumbers. Women come and press their lips to hers, but still she sleeps. Many years past, and the girl remains still. One bright morning,  a lost little boy finds her resting spot and clears the dust and grime from her face. He offers her a kiss on her forehead, and her eyes flutter open. She never feels romantic love for a man nor a woman, and she cares for the boy until the day she dies.

A young woman is imprisoned in a castle by a monstrously formed prince. The servants of the castle hope for them to fall in love, and when the spell is broken they assume their prayers have been answered. They are all surprised, but nonetheless pleased, when it is revealed to them that the young woman and prince are the truest of friends, and nothing more.

They say the kingdom is ruled by an evil queen, a woman who is incapable of loving. She is unmarried, she has no consorts, and she wishes for no partner. She is the wretched queen, the heartless queen. She must hate her daughter, for her daughter is beautiful, and women are incapable of liking another woman who’s prettier than themselves. It must be for this reason that the princess was sent away, not for how she was attacked by a man in the woods. They say the kingdom is ruled by an evil queen because she cannot love. The queen loves her daughter, and that is enough for them both.

There lives a prince who is forced to choose a bride at the ball. He meets many beautiful women, but find none which he loves. He spies one in a gorgeous gown and wonder in her eyes, and he dances with her all night long. The kingdom is sure he has found his bride. When the clock strikes midnight he tells her how he will never love a woman, or a man, in the way he is expected to. The beautiful woman smiles and tells him she expects nothing from him. The next morning the prince and the beautiful woman are missing, having run off together to see the world. They leave their shoes behind in their haste.

Listen man, I'm all for shipping, but bloodymary kinda gets on my nerves sometimes. I'm sorry to my mutuals who love it very much, but it's just not for me. Let me explain:

After Project Hail Mary released, a large majority of people were making art in regards to Grace being aroace (like me). After the emergence of bloodymary though, that number decreased SIGNIFICANTLY. I was (and still am) barely seeing anything related to Grace's aroace-ness. Not only that, but what bloodymary content I was seeing kinda just??? Completely forgot about Rocky????? He became like a side character. And it just pisses me off because it totally undermines one of the reasons I love PHM so much, that being that it shows platonic relationships mean just as much as romantic ones do. And it frustrates me. I get that people are allowed to play dolls however they want, but it is SUCH A STRUGGLE to see aroace representation being actively erased. I don't mean to attack anyone with this post, if you don't like it please just go about your day and ignore me. Just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

I may be a hardcore bloodymary enthusiast, but I've also noticed this problem. I think a lot of bloodmary work tries to "fix" the fact that Grace doesn't have any romantic relationships, completely ignoring the theme in the movie of him being deemed less than for not having any.

Then there's also the reducing of Rocky (a fully sentient and intelligent being with his own agency) to a pet, or worse, not even present.

Don't want to completely overhaul prev's post, so below the cut are my opinions on the topic and how I include that in my writing. (SPOILER WARNING)

While I do love bloodymary and am writing a fic for it (Cocaine Jesus, Don't You Pray), I don't like the whole "they got together and everything was sunshine and rainbows because ✨LOVE✨🥰🥰🥰". No, that's a cop out to avoid having to write good relationship building.

I want their relationship to be fucked up and codependent, completely harmful to both parties. I want to force them to be alone after that and keep them that way until they learn to find inherent value in themselves separate from relationships. The relationship fixes nothing. Grace may not technically be aroace in my fic, but I'm ace myself so I know the pressure to put relationships and sex above ones own self. I want to make him unlearn that. Sure, he does choose to have a relationship with Simon, but only after he accepts that he has inherent value as a person outside of romantic and sexual relationships and doesn't have to rely on them to feel good about himself.

Unfortunately it's an AU, and I feel weird making Rocky into a human. That shit's like the alien version of whitewashing to me. (ya'll's human fanart of him is really pretty, but that's the equivalent of drawing Pinkie Pie white for me). So he's not present as an acting character, but I still managed to cram him in some way because I'll be damned before you can take that little boulder spider away from me!!!
