Thereâs no one who saw her speak last night who could not have left knowing that, for all her faults, she deserved that presidency and it was stolen from her. Now itâs our job to claim that power back.
Last night I was in the same room as Hillary Clinton â and the 2,500 other people who, within two hours of the tickets being released, sold out the London theatre where she was being interviewed.Â
Despite our relative proximity, the audienceâs fidgety anticipation and adrenaline-fuelled nerves were in no way reflected back at us as Clinton presented her usual calm, charming, witty and breathtakingly eloquent self.
She didnât say much you wonât already have heard if youâve listened to any of the myriad interviews sheâs been giving while promoting her book about the 2016 election campaign, the poignantly titled What Happened.Â
But in those 90 minutes I spent in the audience, furiously taking notes and revelling in the buzzing atmosphere, I saw for the first time that she shouldnât just have won that election because she was the votersâ rightful choice, or because of the sickening alternative that came to be, but because the passion and awe she can inspire with the faintest of smiles or by answering the driest of questions is unparalleled.
âŚBut itâs not just her clear credentials, experience, level-headedness and mind-boggling intelligence which would have made her a great president; itâs her humanity, humility, humour and genuine passion that really hit me when I saw her speak live.
As a woman with the temerity to think I have the right to publicly voice my opinions, Iâm no stranger to having abuse and threats hurled at me by droves of strangers over the internet. Yet I will never â hopefully â be able to fathom the level of vitriol Clinton has endured.
And yet at every fall Clinton gets up, dusts herself off, and climbs back into the ring for another round. Some may think itâs masochism, or a desperation to stay relevant, and Iâll admit that her strength seems so alien that sometimes Iâve wondered too.Â
But seeing her onstage speaking so passionately about the positive change she hopes to make in the world made me realise sheâs dedicated her life to the causes she believes in because someone has to. The rest of us donât get it because most of us would never be willing to make such sacrifices.

who knew a white guy could be capable of such an iconic response, he knows whatâs up and is having none of that shit, every other white guy take notes tbh
I love that he said Pakeha
Can someone write what its being said in this?
Male co-host: We have had a whole heap of feedback regarding Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davisâs proposal to institute a prison run on MÄori values into New Zealand. Heâs looking at potentially establishing this prison up north. It isnât Labour policy just yet, itâs just an idea of Kelvin Davisâs. And this has been really really divisive on our Facebook page this morning. (sarcastically) Here I think we have the single greatest email, the single greatest message we have ever had on breakfast.
(clears throat deliberately) ââJaniceâ says: Good morning. Iâm sick of hearing that MÄori need different treatment. If they donât want to live in our society, then maybe we should put them all on an island and leave them to it.â
Male co-host: âJanice. That is LITERALLY what happened! That is the history of our country. Last I checked, MÄori WERE on an island, they were left to it, and then PÄkehÄ (MÄori term for white New Zealanders) turned up and look how that worked out. But thank you very much for that brilliant insight. Goodness me. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, they actually-â
Female co-host: âActually, you canât even get angry, you just actually need to laugh and then screw it up and put it under the desk. Just when you thought-â
Male co-host: (mimicking letter) ââPut them all on an island, leave them to it.â Yeah. What a great idea that is Janice.
I really need âWhat a great idea that is, Janice.â to be a meme filled with those stupid complete cognitive dissonance bigoted statements.
