Hellooo! This is a little premise-post for a personal project of mine!
A snarky broke art thief college student and a crazed old fairy janitor are swept up in a buddycomedy-style adventure and get in trouble with the fae mob court. Father-daughter found family bonding, mystery, and gritty violence ensues.
INSPIRATION SMOOTHIE!
THE WORLD
This is a casual, low-fantasy sorta setting, taking place in around the early 2000s.
The mythological is a regular part of day-to-day life. You might see a study group of tree spirits at your local cafe, or an agency recommending you travel by Gateway Of The Giant Eternal Portal Stag instead of by train :)
THE SETUP
There’s a whimsical, magical fairy school hidden deep in the woods… and two of its students are set on discovering the secrets amongst its walls. Can they solve an enchanted academia mystery and pass their classes at the same time???
NO! :D They are children! Capable ones sure, but they still get way in over their heads with the magical equivalent of a gang war and one of them dies horribly! Now the other’s like 54 and she probably lives in Germany! The school’s gone to pot and it’s been sitting abandoned in the woods for decades! The whole property is just weeds and thorns now! :D
Enter our protagonist: Ann. A burnt-out college kid doing repo work for a Very Not Seedy lawyer.
Her latest assignment’s a bit odd. Going into wild Fairy Country —especially to take something from it— is a huuuuuge hell-to-the-no for her. The problem is, her contract’s fine print is a bit more overreaching (and a bit more cursed) than she realized.
“It’s all just animals, darling! You can handle a few rodents, can’t you?” Leave it to a lawyer to be vague. Might as well get it over with and try not to die.
She gets stuck out in the woods and is, in fact, probably going to die.
She won’t be alone if she does, at least. The ruins hold more than just the junk she was sent there to collect — the school’s old janitor is still trapped there too, and he’s gone a little crazy.
The duo quickly goes from constantly bickering to teaming up to survive the horrors of a fairy forest dead-set on eating them. They’ll have to fight, shmooze, or ignore their way out of encounter after encounter with its royalty and residents… some of them left over from that old mystery those two students never did solve.
Over the course of the story, they form a pretty wholesome found-family, father-daughter bond as they tough it out in their terrible environment.
…They gotta find a way to get outta here.
MAIN CHARACTERS
A tired, deadpan college student just trying and failing to stay afloat on her own. A thin veneer of dry humor and David Attenborough penguin documentaries are the only two legs she still stands on.
She does what she can to avoid risky situations and use her common sense, but she tends to get stuck in tight spots all the same. She needs a nap. She needs five consecutive naps. And then another nap.
She’s like if an ingrown hair was given a shrimpy lil’ toothpick vessel to pilot. Lesbian but way too quiet to act on a crush. She just keeps spiraling in about how pretty women are. Living is wayy too much responsibility and now there’s. Girls??? Ough . .. (Doesn’t help that she meets a fine young lady of the forest court that’s absolutely lovely~)
A janitor stuck in the ruins of the school he used to clean, left to go insane for decades.
He’s a little dinky and clumsy, but his heart’s in the right place. Despite their madness they’re cleverer than it seems, and he’s got a feisty streak of charisma to ‘em! It can get a little theatrical sometimes. Maybe they just do it to make someone laugh. There’s not typically an audience, though… not until Ann came along, anyways. (Right?)
Loud and pathetic all at once. They’re VERY petty, unless they decide you’re a friend. Then he’ll forgive you for just about anything. Also they’re just a big ol’ goober :)
For this duo’s dynamic think Jim & John Silver, with hints of Vanessa & Doofinshmertz, Eda & Luz, and Marceline & Ice King!
I’m a sucker for kooky mentors and their wonderfully weird kids — I absolutely LOVE it when stories make that relationship a main focus, so expect plenty of fluff and comfort from these two!! Also The Horrors. They’ll be going through The Horros a lot :)
SOME FUN FACTS, FAIRY LORE & TIDBITS!
Most Fairies are AFAB (Assigned Fungus At Birth) and unless the pronouns are The/Spore you can always assume that their thigh-high boots are equally thigh-deep in all the pronouns they collect. They wear em’ around like rhinestones.
Lots of the Folk are pretty casual about rules these days. Laws are only as powerful as a society’s belief in their necessity, and when that same belief is what fuels the magic tying you to them, wellllll… after a few generations, you start jaywalking. Just remember to be polite in front of the old ones — the binding magic surrounding how you interact still has its merit.
Haven’t put a lot of thought into world history yet but I’m declaring Right Now that in this universe several important figures from throughout the eras were tiny little gentleman beetles with mandible mustaches. Et tu Bugtus
HOW WILL IT TAKE SHAPE?
I wanna keep it small, and learn some things from having fun playing around with it :) I’ll be takin’ my sweet time, that’s for sure! It should have a nice, slow, “cozy but like it’s trying to coax you into death’s sweet embrace sometimes” feel!
However I decide to make content about it, it’ll always be 100% human! I’d like to keep its main stuff on a secret little website people’ll be able to find, with some posts on here and other social media. I’ll probably put a link for it here when I make it hehe

Gonna write out a detailed premise for Vermin Road real soon! Parts of it are gonna be articulated with these panels :) I’m excited to finally spew some of the ideas I haven’t been able to phrase yet!!
