*picks up phone* All right sir, try and remain calm, we get a lot of these calls and the solution is simple.

Here’s what you do: you appreciate yourself and your features (which are a vehicle for expressing your consciousness, holy crap that’s weird to think about, I’m sort of having an existential crisis now) and dress how you want to and think about what you say and then do what you really want to, because if you are remembered with admiration and love it will be for who you were and what you accomplished, not how bammin’ slammin’ bootylicious you were.

No one thinks about Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s or Stephen Hawking’s bangablilty, because they’re too busy listening to or reading their words. (Although Nikola Tesla wasn’t hard on the eyes, I care more about his whole wireless electricity thing.) It’s what’s in the mind and on the tongue that matters in a person, and you’re brilliant! There are so many factors that make a person attractive or unattractive that have little or nothing to do with genetics, and they are far more important than what you don’t like about yourself on the surface!

If you’re still worrying about your appearance, I hope you don’t for much longer, because a face is just a face and a body is only a body, and the mind makes the human.

I know that some of you feel like you’re unattractive. And, honestly, so what if you were? What’s so great about being attractive? Some attractive people are really lame, and some unattractive people contribute awesome things to society every single day.

People will tell you that you need to be attractive. Those people are silly. The world would be just fine without another attractive person, but it wouldn’t be quite the same without you.

Things I have learned in therapy in the past three months:

there is no such thing as “normal”, but there is a such thing as “healthy”

it is okay to ask for what you need

it is okay to say that someone is hurting you

healthy people show that they love you by respecting your needs and boundaries, not by throwing temper tantrums and insisting you pay attention to them

it’s not your fault if someone is hurt by your need for boundaries

it is okay to ask if you’re behaving in a rational matter

it’s still a valid accomplishment, even if it was easy

it is okay to not face something if you’re not ready

it’s okay to not be strong - that is different from being weak

you might have a great sense of humor, but it’s not your job to make people laugh or make them feel better when you feel like crap

life hack: remember to compliment people on qualities other than their looks. remind them of their kindness, thoughtfulness, and intelligence. tell them about how powerful and capable they are.

and you don’t know them and they don’t know you, but maybe that photo is framed on a desk or stuck in a photo album

and you were just going about your life, but you’re also somehow a part of the life of this stranger you’ve never met, forever connected by that one photograph

Have you ever tried to take a picture of a sunset with a crappy camera? It turns out like shit.  I mean that could be the most beautiful sunset you’ve ever seen in your life and the photo looks gross. 

That doesn’t mean the sunset  isn’t breathtaking, it just means the camera can’t contain it’s beauty.
