This blog has been a diary capturing the process of creating my short film Kaleidoscope. Because of this it is chronological order with the most recent posts on the front page. to start at the back and work your way forward CLICK ON THIS LINK and start from the bottom of the page. This is the final version of the edit. Overall i am very happy with how it turned out although there are lots of things i would do differently if i had to repeat the process again. lighting is something that i think is both the films strongest and weakest elements. the scenes that i artificially lit are a closer realization to what was originally in my head than some of the darker naturally lit scenes.
That being said i love that i have been able to produce something were I could truly be experimental and learn things that will benefit me in all my future projects.
after finishing the rough cut of the film with sound and music complete I showed the finished product to Jo. she felt there was still more that i could cut out especially the dialogue when Rey orders a takeaway. I removed they entire monologue so it was just a quick line "hello can I order delivery" It felt a million times quicker without it as I have had negative thoughts towards that scene for a while.
I decided not to colour grade my film. instead I chose to simply correct certain scenes that where too dark or have an incorrect white balance.
above are images showing the before and after so you can see the difference made. all colour correction was completed in Final cut pro.
this is how originally i thought i wanted the music to be, under three sections of the film:
the beginning
the dream sequence in the middle
the second dream sequence
however on creating this i feel as though my tutors reservations about the motif wearing thin are correct. in my next edit I think i am only going to use it during the beginning (titles till she leaves her bedroom) and the end climax of the film (from after the second dream sequence) to bookend the film. that way the motif isn't too overbearing and the silences are more pronounced.
instead during the dream sequence I am going to play the nature sound effects that i use at the end as a for shadowing technique.

after looking for copyright free music on archive.org I ended up with a choice of three different pieces. I listened to all of them while playing my film over the top. After discussion with my tutor and classmates the general consensus was that this fitted the piece the best and gave the day dream sequences an otherworldly feel.
I used Dafonts.com to find a suitable typeface for my opening titles. I wanted to use a simplistic san-serif font to fit with the theme of the film. In the end I settled with Avinr as i liked the completely circular "O" which fitted directly in the centre of the Kalidoscope footage in the background.
Narrative and musical structure Opening:
-credits - title - establishing unique visual motif and accompanying musical motif Beginning:
- liz fading out of daydream (music fades with her) - going downstairs, picking up post - reads letter from mother, has emotionally returned to reality - mundane living - feeding cat, reading book - hears disturbing news broadcast, triggers a need to return to daydream world, motif returns Middle:
- daydream sequence - wakes up and motif ends - hungry and orders food - has encounter with takeaway man but is prepared - returns to reading and is disturbed by visitor knocking on window - triggers a need to return to daydream world - short daydream sequence, motif returns - builds fort to escape world even further - time jump from january to april Ending - liz accidentally drops kaleidoscope out window (motif plays) - runs downstairs to retrieve in back garden, opens door (motif fades) - once outside, motif is replaced by nature sounds (nature's music) she doesn't need music (her imagination) anymore and is awakened to the beauty of reality once again
Opening titles to Orphan black. one of the inspirations for my opening credits
Laura Marling - Alas I cannot swim
Rey's theme song
Recce shots taken before filming.
This is my second idea for the opening titles sequence and the one I have decided to use due to the consensus of both my class and tutors.
The Kaleidoscopic effect was applied using Final cut pro and I had already experimented with it previously in my early research, when deciding whether or not to digitally alter the dream sequences or use a hand made Kaleidoscopic lens. I decided I liked the effect but it felt too artificial and less easy to distinguish what was happening.
The effect reminded me of the opening titles of the BBC show the Queens Nose (referenced earlier on in my blog) and eventually this led me decide to try and create my own, using a more Modern Type face.
I took one of my own Kaleidoscope shots of flowers and used the tiling filter to create the background, then exported the sequence to Adobe After effects where I applied the type face.
I feel as though this opening is more effective that the minimalist one I have designed previously, and more consistent with the motif through out the film.
This is the first idea I had for my opening titles. I created them using Adobe After effects which we have been taught earlier in the year by our tutor Danny Turner.
This is a very simplistic opening sequence, with a subtle connection to the theme of the film. I used a clean san-serif typeface which fades in and rotates 90° leaving a trail of colours. I wanted it to be suggestive of the movement and vibrant colours in a Kaleidoscope without being so overt.
