A beast with many faces, Andrewsarchus was once thought to either be a mesonychid, arctocyonid, or even a basal whale, it has since been recovered as a basal member of Cetancodontamorpha, the family of artiodactyls that includes the whales, hippos, and the entelodonts, with Andrewsarchus being closest in relation to Entelodontidae. Andrewsarchus would have had an omnivorous diet like its close entelodont relatives. It lived in the Middle Eocene Irdin Manha Formation of Inner Mongolia.
