LOTTIE  HAD  PROVEN  TIME  AND  TIME  AGAIN  THAT  SOMETHING  GREATER  THAN  HER  WAS  AT  PLAY,       yet  she  found  herself  worried  that  the  mythology  her  compound  was  built  on  would  shatter  completely  if  she  brought  emily  home.       that  safe  space  she  created  for  herself  in  the  name  of  the  wilderness  would  slip  from  her  grasp  and  she  would  be  left  with  nothing.       it  seemed  trivial,       didn’t  it?       when  the  woman  who  loved  her  stood  here,       devoted,       and  willing  to  move  past  what  she’d  done.       why  couldn’t  that  be  enough?       all  lottie  had  ever  wanted  in  her  whole  life  was  to  be  loved  and  accepted  for  who  she  was.       she  had  that,       right  here,       on  a  silver  platter  and  she  could  not  bring  herself  to  accept  it.       why?       what  was  so  deeply  broken  inside  of  her  that  made  her  this  way?       there  was  no  amount  of  electroshock  therapy  or  sharing  circles  that  could  convince  her  that  love  could  exist  without  demanding  a  sacrifice.       but  regardless  of  the  fault  line  running  through  her  soul,       there  was  no  denying  the  emotional  attachment  she  felt  toward  emily.       it  was  why  she  was  here  at  all.

[       YOU'VE  NEVER  SCARED  ME.       ]       ❝  i  hunted  you.  ❞       she  stated,       admitting  it  out  loud  made  her  stomach  twist  into  knots.       much  of  that  night  was  blurred  in  memory,       but  it  didn’t  change  the  deep-seated  guilt.       ❝  i  was  going  to  kill  you.  ❞       [       YOU  SHOULD  HAVE  DONE  IT.       ]       it  was  this  next  part  that  was  making  her  heart  pound  against  her  ribs,       an  admission  of  self  -  awareness  that  she,       quite  frankly,       avoided  up  until  this  moment.       she  swallowed  hard.       ❝  that  isn't  normal.  that  is  not  love.  ❞       this  was  the  only  other  mercy  lottie  knew  how  to  offer       :       if  she  could  convince  emily  that  loving  her  was  dangerous,       maybe  it  would  be  easier  for  her  to  move  on  with  her  life.       to  build  something  that  belonged  solely  to  her.       a  life  away  from  lottie.       away  from  the  wilderness.

lottie  released  her  from  her  grasp  then,       realizing  the  contradiction  in  her  own  actions.       she  couldn't  possess  something  she  was  simultaneously  trying  to  push  away.       ❝  it  doesn't  matter,  ❞       she  said  quietly.       ❝  what  matters  is  that  i'm  giving  you  the  means  to  start  a  life  away  from  It.  will  you  please  take  this?  ❞       she  reached  into  her  pocket,       offering  emily  the  envelope  of  money  for  a  second  time.       ❝  i  want  you  to  take  it.  i  want  you  to  open  a  bank  account  so  i  can  send  you  cashier's  checks  every  month.  ❞       the  intention  behind  it  was  good.       at  least,       she  wanted  to  believe  it  was.       but  somewhere  along  the  way,       she  had  inherited  the  same  instinct  her  father  had  carried  for  years       :       the  belief  that  if  you  gave  someone  enough,       maybe  they  would  forget  what  you'd  taken  from  them.       that  money  could  fill  the  space  where  an  apology  should  have  been.       it  was  the  same  lesson  she'd  learned  as  a  child,       standing  on  the  receiving  end  of  malcolm  matthews'  attempts  at  making  things  right.       the  money.       the  gifts.       the  empty  gestures  that  were  supposed  to  mean  something.

lottie  had  spent  her  entire  life  resenting  him  for  it, and  now  she  was  doing  the  exact  same  thing.

i hunted you. as if she had forgotten. emily remembered sprinting through the woods. she remembered lottie catching her. pinned to ground with her wife hovering over her with a knife. in that moment , she had felt fear. but not of lottie. but of what she was in that moment. the look in her eyes just before the knife slashed across her cheek. it was wild and it was unlike the lottie she knew. but she had come back. she had stopped. even scarred and bloody , emily was allowed to leave. emily knew that went against everything lottie taught. she knew that there were consequences and beliefs and things at play that she could never claim to understand. ❝ i don't care. ❞ she huffs. she believed , maybe naively , that their love for each other could still rectify this. that it wasn't really over.

lottie releases her grasp and emily feels the twisted urgency for more. to ask her to come closer. to hold her like old times. to just be together. and if not , at the very least , put your hand back on my throat. it makes her stomach churn and she looks down at the ground to try and sever the ache she felt. lottie was the center of her universe for so many years , now she was floating lost without a center. emily was still trying to figure out who she was alone. so much of her identity had been left behind, she wasn't sure who stood in her shoes now.

then it's the money again. lottie pulls it out and offers it forward , with instructions on how to continue receiving more. emily's annoyance flares into anger. she shoves lottie's hand with the money away , stepping back with a scoff. ❝ i'm not taking your money ! ❞ she doesn't mean to yell , but all the emotion she's holdng in her throat is bubbling over. all the things she didn't say , all the betrayal that she felt. ❝ you can't have it both ways, lottie! either you want me in your life or you don't. but i'm not going to live on your money so that you feel better. ❞

❝ ― and if i did ? then i would get a random check once a month and pretend it wasn't from my murderous wife ? pretend that it doesn't break my heart to see your name written on it ? ❞ she pushes the heels of her hands into her eyes , rubbing away the stinging feeling. ❝ i'm not doing it. and i don't care if that makes you feel guilty or whatever. you did this to me. ❞

she takes several long deep breaths to steady herself , rubbing her face again before moving her hands away and crossing them loosely over her chest as she leans into the doorframe. not casually, but almost as if she needs the support. her voice is lower and quieted , and she sounds tired , ❝ i love you, lottie. i've loved you since i first met you. you're making a mistake. ❞

hands are buried deep in the pockets of her coat , she's scanning the room carefully , but dare not leave a fingerprint beind. nerea didn't usually come back to the scene of the crime. it was roped off with yellow police tape , the entire apartment off limits from the world. she'd told the officer outside that she lived on the top floor in order to gain access. even showed him a believable fake key. he'd conceded and she snaked up the stairs to the second-floor apartment where she'd killed someone only a week earlier. normally she took every precaution , but she'd gotten sloppy , left a piece of jewelry behind. a necklace that would appear suspiciously out of place in such a modern apartment.

she crouches down and finds the necklace , chain broken and kicked under the sofa. she picks up the chunky medallion and pockets it. it was better to get out of here as quickly as possible , lest the police officer comes inside or a neighbor shows up. she straightens herself up, dusting off her long coat and heading for the door. she freezes in place when the handle begins to creak and turn. composing herself , she grabs a pile of mail off the counter and turns to face the new arrival.

❝ oh hello , so sorry. i work with the landlord and she asked me to come check that all the appliances were off. ❞ she waves the envelopes in the air , ❝ ― and i brought the mail. you are ? ❞

THE  DEFIANCE  FROM  EMILY  WAS  NO  SURPRISE,       BUT  IT  WAS  SOMETHING  THAT  LOTTIE  WASN'T  USED  TO.       the  thing  about  painting  yourself  as  a  savior,       or  messiah—       was  that  people  rarely  challenged  you.       reverence  was  expected  and  respect  was  never  withheld.       day  to  day,       she  surrounded  herself  with  people  who  had  traded  their  former  religion  for  hers—       people  who  would  do  anything  she  asked  of  them.       that  was  the  life  she  created  from  the  ruins  of  a  past  filled  with  fervor,       harsh  words,       and  years  of  being  made  to  feel  like  a  monster.       she  hadn’t  been  faced  with  the  latter  in  a  long  while,       but  standing  here  with  emily  in  the  aftermath  of  what  she’d  nearly  done,       forced  a  different  kind  of  perspective.       only       …       perspective  didn’t  change  anything.       lottie  would  always  believe  that  her  purpose  was  sacred       ;       more  sacred  than  promises  made  at  an  altar,       more  sacred  than  love  itself.

there  was  a  distant  voice  in  the  back  of  her  mind  telling  her  that  she  could  rectify  her  choice.       that  she  could  give  the  wilderness  what  It  wanted  and  prevent  further  slaughtering  of  the  surviving  yellowjackets.       this  fraudulent  version  of  herself—       the  one  that  betrayed  the  very  thing  she  swore  to  honor  for  as  long  as  she  was  alive  when  she  was  only  eighteen—       couldn’t  do  it.       her  fingers  twitched,       as  if  she  were  physically  trying  to  restrain  herself.       this  was  why  she  shouldn’t  be  here—       she  was  the  very  thing  that  emily  needed  protecting  from.       ❝  it  was  wrong  of  me  to  come  here,  i  understand  that,  but  please  don’t  be  foolish.  this  money  will  help  you  get  on  your  feet.  ❞       in  other  words       :       it’s  the  least  i  could  do.       despite  her  insistence,       she  did  take  the  envelope  back  when  it  was  handed  to  her,       but  that  was  only  temporary.

[       LOTTIE,       THIS  ISN’T  MY  LIFE.       ]       lottie’s  gaze  left  emily’s  for  the  first  time  since  the  door  opened  and  wandered,       taking  in  what  she  could  of  the  family  home.       there  was  nothing  to  indicate  emily’s  comfort  here  and  from  what  she  could  gather,       the  house  was  catered  to  a  man’s  needs—       her  brother,       she  assumed.       [       I’M  SUPPOSED  TO  BE  WITH  YOU.       ]       ❝  that’s  not  a  possibility  anymore.  i  was  never  dishonest  with  you  about  the  risk  you  were  taking  by  being  with  me.  ❞

it  wasn’t  meant  to  place  blame  on  emily,       though  the  words  did  come  off  that  way.       ❝  my  faith       …       it  has  always  come  first.  before  everything.  It  is  greater  than  you  and  i  and  my  purpose       …       my  purpose  is  to  give  It  what  It  wants.  ❞       there  was  a  brief  pause  in  her  words,       her  gaze  returning  to  study  the  scar  on  emily’s  face—       her  expression  softening.       ❝  what  It  wanted  was  you.  ❞       lottie  reached  out  again  slowly,       giving  emily  every  opportunity  to  move  away.       there  was  no  anger.       no  threat.       no  desire  to  cause  harm—       only  a  strange,       quiet  act  of  possession.       her  fingers  settled  against  emily’s  throat,       gentle  enough  to  be  taken  for  tenderness.       the  rhythm  of  her  pulse  beat  softly  against  lottie’s  palm.       ❝  but  i  didn’t  want  to  hurt  you.  ❞       she  whispered,       leaning  in  to  press  a  kiss  against  the  scar  on  her  cheek.       ❝  i’m  sorry  that  i  did.  ❞

something  had  changed  in  the  way  emily  responded  to  her  touch.       understandably  so.       the  distance  between  them  hadn't  existed  before—       not  like  this.       she  searched  emily's  face  for  a  long  moment,       as  though  hoping  she  was  wrong. ❝  have  i  made  you  afraid  of  me?  ❞

emily couldn't help the pang of betrayal in her chest as lottie tried to explain. that's not a possibility anymore. she physically winces as the momentary flash of hope was once again extinguished. lottie wasn't here to fix things. her eyes are stinging and she blinks repeatedly to try and hide the way her pain manifested. she wanted to believe that she could come home now. that they could share their morning coffee together again.

her lips press into a deep frown , looking away at first when lottie discussed her faith. as if emily hadn't given everything to the same faith. she was being spoken to like some stranger. some outsider. she had followed every command , every trial and test , she turned over everything she had for that faith. she stood behind lottie at every intersection , backing her decisions , believing in what she saw.

emily remains frozen in place , forcing herself to hold lottie's gaze as her hand stretches out. she follows the woman's gaze to the scar on her own face. notices the way lottie's eyes keep catching on it. she lifts her chin slightly , remaining steadfast as her wife touches her. her heart thuds heavier , but not in fear. she doesn't fear lottie. it's anticipation , longing for the familiarity of a friendly touch.

❝ you've never scared me. ❞ she says , feeling somewhat proud of how steady her voice remains. she'd seen lottie in every stage , from the girl in the psych ward , to the revered prophet. emily had never faltered. never questioned. and while she had been afraid ― that night on the compound , she wasn't now. ❝ you should have done it. ❞ she said more quietly , still within the woman's grasp. ❝ if that's what the wilderness wanted. you should have done it. ❞

she leans into the touch on her throat , pushing against her hand slightly. it's the first time in thei entire relationship that she's dared to question lottie , or to assume that her way wasn't the best way. and what did she have left to use ? this place was a punishment in itself. ❝ ― is it punishing you lottie ? for letting me go ? ❞

LOTTIE  PUT  ON  THE  PERFORMANCE  OF  A  LIFETIME  THE  NIGHT  SHE  MADE  THE  ENTIRE  COMPOUND  BELIEVE  THAT  SHE’D  GUTTED  HER  WIFE  IN  THE  NAME  OF  APPEASING  THE  WILDERNESS.      she  stood  there  in  the  center  of  the  ceremonial  circle,      covered  in  pig’s  blood      ;      the  knife  in  her  hand  dripped  crimson  onto  the  ground  and  around  her,      helionites  watched  in  both  silence  and  awe.      she  claimed  she’d  fulfilled  her  purpose  and  the  goddess  that  she  prayed  to  was  pleased  with  their  sacrifice.      the  only  thing  that  hadn’t  been  performed  was  the  shock  of  what  she’d  nearly  done.        lottie  had  every  intention  of  fulfilling  the  prophecy  when  she  caught  up  to  emily.      as  the  knife  sliced  across  emily’s  cheek,      lottie  looked  into  desperate  eyes  pleading  with  her—      eyes  that  still  held  love  despite  the  blade  pressed  against  her  throat.      the  rational  part  of  her  mind,       the  piece  of  herself  that  had  been  buried  beneath  visions  and  unwavering  devotion,      suddenly  seized  control.      so,      lottie  told  her  to  run.      she  gave  emily  directions  on  how  to  escape  the  compound  through  the  eastern  side  and  gave  her  a  head  start,      but  not  without  a  warning      :      if  she  caught  up  to  her  again,       she  would  have  no  choice  but  to  finish  what  she  had  started. lottie  tried  to  repress,      to  remove  herself  from  the  regret,      and  to  detach  from  years  of  having  a  companion–      whether  deserved  or  not.      there  were  days  where  it  was  easy,      where  it  felt  like  emily  had  never  existed  but  those  moments  where  she  was  in  her  cabin,      alone,      with  candles  burning  that  she  remembered.      then  travis  died,      needlessly,      and  sparing  emily’s  life  became  all  she  could  think  about. travis’  death  felt  like  a  punishment.      something  she  was  forced  to  witness  and  endure  for  sparing  emily’s  life,      proof  that  the  wilderness  was  no  longer  satisfied  with  her  choices  and  Its  hunger  for  the  survivors–      for  her  friends,      was  worse  than  it  had  ever  been.      no  longer  could  she  keep  the  spirit  of  that  place  dormant  with  monthly  sacrifices  at  the  compound  of  helionites  that  have  reached  their  most  primal  selves.      she  had  gone  against  her  beliefs,      against  her  god,      and  for  what?      was  it  love?      lottie  never  could  quite  admit  that  to  herself,      or  out loud,      but  it  was  something  bordering  on  it,      at  least.      an  attachment,      or  a  devotion  that  she  only  felt  deeply  when  the  knife  pierced  emily’s  flesh  and  blood trailed  down  her  cheek.

lottie  hired  a  private  investigator,      using  every  detail  she'd  memorized  about  emily's  life  before  she  arrived  at  the  institution  in  switzerland—      where  they  had  first  met—      to  track  her  down  in  her  hometown.      she  excused  herself  from  the  compound  for  a  few  days,      leaving  her  brother  to  oversee  things  in  her  absence,      and  made  the  trip.      emily’s  childhood  home  was  smaller  than  where  she  had  grown  up,      the  kind  of  place  that  she  might  have  enjoyed  living  in  just  to  feel  closer  to  her  family.      there  was  something  deeply  isolating  about  living  in  a  house  so  large  that  you  could  go  for  days  without  running  into  a  single  person  that  wasn’t  staff.

standing  on  the  porch,      lottie  knocked,      then  braced  herself.      there  was  no  telling  what  was  waiting  for  her  on  the  other  side  of  the  door  and  she  was  trying  to  prepare  herself  for  any  possible  outcome.      when  the  door  finally  opened  and  it  was  emily  on  the  other  side,      her  breath  caught  in  her  throat.      guilt  of  varying  degrees  gnawed  at  her  insides,      but  it  was  when  she  caught  sight  of  the  scar  on  emily’s  face  that  lottie  felt  like  she  might  crawl  out  of  her  skin  in  a  futile  attempt  to  remove  herself  from  this  moment.

without  thinking,       she  reached  up,       gently  brushing  a  strand  of  emily's  hair  away  from  her  face  for  a  better  look  at  the  mark  she'd  left  behind.      ❝  i—      i  had  to  make  sure  you  were      …      safe.  ❞  the  irony  of  those  words  was  not  lost  on  her,      especially  as  she  stared  at  the  pale  reminder  left  by  her  own  hand.      ❝  and  to  give  you  this.  ❞      lottie  reached  into  her  pocket  to  retrieve  an  envelope  of  fifty  grand  in  cash  and  handed  it  over  to  emily.      ❝  i  shouldn't  be  here,  emily,  please  take  it.  ❞

all she can seem to do is stand there in shock. the last few months emily had to rebuild her life from the ground up. she was forced into facing the family she left behind when she chose lottie. emily left everything behind without a note , without an explanation. she was forced into the humbling reunion where she found that her parents had passed. they died never knowing what happened to their only daughter. only that she checked out of the hospital they had spent all their money on , and disappeared. looking back , it was cruel. but emily was so wrapped up in lottie that she couldn't see past her feelings. she knew she wanted to follow lottie into whatever life she created , even if that meant throwing everything else away. turned out she didn't like being on the receiving end nearly as much. she had spent so many nights staring at the ceiling , wondering if she should have let herself get caught in the compound. at least then it was all for a reason. her death could have served a purpose.

emily brushes the hand away from her face. it was just another reminder of how everything fell apart. of how she was supposed to be dead. ❝ ― safe ? ❞ she can't help but laugh at the irony. she furiously wipes her tears , trying to bury the emotions that roared. her life had fallen apart , marriage over , confronting her ghosts in her hometown. but she was safe. ❝ you told me to leave. that i could never come back. how dare you show up here ? ❞ despite her every effort , the words are laced with the emotions brimming in her broken heart. she still loved lottie. she had loved lottie since the day they met. she was devout. did everything that was asked of her. believed that lottie knew better than anyone. followed her blindly. and all that love still sat in her heart , hidden behind momentary flashes of anger.

emily takes the envelope hesitantly. she expects that it's money , but with lottie , she had learned a long time ago to expect surprises. she opens it and thumbs through the money with a harsh scoff , folding the envelope back up. ❝ you think this fixes things ? i don't want your money , lot. ❞ she holds it back out firmly. that kind of money would change things here , would allow her to find a better job or set up a more stable life away from her brother. but the idea of leaning on lottie's sympathy after she was the one who sent emily away , could make her sick. ❝ i'm not taking it. and i won't use it if you leave it here. in fact , i'll burn it. ❞

emily folded her arms over her chest , attempting to retain some semblance of dignity in this conversation. ❝ what am i supposed to do here ? lottie , this isn't my life. i'm supposed to be with you. ❞

over a hundred years ago , nerea deeply betrayed her lover in unforgiveable ways. her lover , in turn , cast a curse upon her to walk the earth forever , stealing from those she tried to be human with. the moment the vulnerability was presented to her , nerea was compelled to steal their face. through an absorption process , she could steal their features right off their skull , leaving a blank , fleshy expanse in its space. the unfortunate victim , left with no eyes , nor nose or mouth , quickly suffocated to death. everyone she attempted to love after that day died the same way ― clawing at their face , making muffled sounds and thrashing about. over time , the loss turned her to a state of indifference. until she began preying on those who presented their vulnerability. she functions as a serial killer of sorts , holding a massive repertoire of faces that she can interchange with her own at will.
