Yeah, Gambler, I understand how you feel about this right now, but the fact remains that a member of your band has been sexually harassing people at concerts and online and making them feel uncomfortable. As Iâve said before, I really donât want to hear âbut thatâs just band/music cultureâ because YEAH IT IS part of band/music culture: itâs a part that needs to stop and go away.
I still love your music. I think the songs you guys make are great. Musically your stuff is fantastic to listen to, and a lot of your words still resonate with me deeply. The fact remains that even if Turbo Lover isnât with the band anymore, Iâve had many, MANY women come up to me and say that they donât feel comfortable going to your shows anymore because of Murphy Wellerâs behavior.
Maybe the rest of the band are upstanding angels! Maybe so. But if thatâs the case, you all need to do something to curb this behavior and make it stop, and WE need to hear from you guys that you ARE doing something about this: an actual, genuine apology from Murphy for his behavior, and a promise from everyone in the band that this shit is going to stop.Â
I love the Protomen, but I want Protomen concerts to be a safe space for EVERYONE, and right now, they arenât.Â

Shortly after I posted up this ask, I got sent a second message from her:
âIf you would like to talk to me about things Iâm happy to discuss things on a one on one basis.â
I tried to take this on good faith, and while still angry about being personally attacked by a fucking band member, I replied honestly:
âOkay, Iâll answer privately, then, with a list of complaints: 1) Sending me that ask was rude, unprofessional, and, again, uncalled for, as I seriously have not talked about you guys in MONTHS (mostly because I know some of my friends still support you). 2) Murphy hit on one of my friends constantly and aggressively, including, shortly after she had broken up with her girlfriend, grabbing her without permission. He also made homophobic statements about her being âtoo attractiveâ to keep away from men. Is this even a passing concern? Do you have any plans to deal with this beyond harassing random Tumblr users who just kind of post cats most of the time? I know I said I wasnât going to talk too much about this, but here is what I do know.
I DO KNOW that the man who goes by the name Murphy Weller has a history of sexually pursuing fans of his band, including people much younger than he is. I personally know at least one person who Murphy pursued and slept with and then later guilted and harassed when they no longer wanted to continue having relations with him when they were 18 and he was in his 30s, and while this is not illegal, it is an absolutely shitty thing to do to go after someone that much younger than you especially when you are respected/idolized by them and in a position of power. I know he has done this more than once. I DO KNOW from people who were there that the band member who goes by the name of Turbo Lover has in fact slept with a fan who was at the time under 18, while he was in a relationship with someone else, and that he continued to pursue them through messages after the fact. I DO KNOW that Alanna who made the original post calling out the band members on their actions has been in a relationship with Turbo Lover for the past several years, and would know about his behavior during that time better than anyone. I cannot personally attest to any accusations against any other members of the band, but I have been an active fan of the Protomen for years, and have spoken to/am close friends with many people who have been far closer to the band than I have and were either directly affected by or were witness to the behavior of these members and can verify that the accusations against Murphy and TL are true. I DO KNOW that anyone who thinks the accusations against the band are just the tumblr SJWs trying to defame the popular cis white scum band âThe Protomenâ is a fucking idiot.
I (and others) have known about the behavior mentioned above for a long time, and never mentioned it before now because it is not my place to tell anyone elseâs stories of abuse for them if they were not willing to publicly talk about it. However now that Alanna has made her post, it is my duty to confirm what I can of what she and the other people who have come forward with their stories have said in the interests of informing anyone who is a fan of the band who is either currently or in the future may be approached sexually or romantically by the people mentioned above, and to back them up in the face of anyone who honestly believes they would be making any of this shit up. If anyone has any other stories about this they want to add on in regards to the other allegations Alanna or others made, feel free, but what is above is what I do know and can confirm as being absolutely true.
Alex is 100% correct, and as another former fan I can confirm that Iâve heard all the same stories - probably from most of the same people - from around 2010-2013, when I finally walked away from this incredibly toxic subculture. I had nothing to say about what Iâd heard because I had no real stake in it personally and a much stronger desire to just wrap away that part of my life, a very misguided era where I was looking for something external in the face of my own self-doubt and depression to believe in. The bandom is very culty in that way.
The Protomen are, in broad, a bunch of deep Southern dudebros who treat women like disposable objects. Nobody should be really surprised that a rock band gets into road shenanigans - drugs, disorderly and shit like that are all part of the basic âweâre drunk and 20 years oldâ rock star package. But when weâre talking about shaming, harassing and chasing after naive, starstruck teenage girls, thatâs just skeevy. And only the shittiest bands pull THAT shit.
They have a militant and toxic inner fandom circle that defends their actions and aggressively spins for them beyond the point of logic or reason, making stories like Alannaâs all that much harder to surface. They will be attacking Alex, me, her and anyone else who dares to step off the ranch. Keep Quiet indeed. It took incredible courage for her to say what she did. And it took incredible courage for everyone else thatâs come forward with their stories to do the same.Â
Even more so since the people being named as the problem kids are also the public speakers and mouthpieces for the group. If you expect to hear any âofficial commentâ from the band addressing this, stop holding your breath now.Â

I don't know if it's my pregnancy hormones, or my motherly instinct, but fuck all of this is going to get swept under the fucking rug. This happened to friends, respected women of this fan base and I'm so fucking disgusted that people are just dropping this.

Also we are only getting people making claims about the bandâs shitty actions just after the OPâs post started taking off. I have never ever heard of them being jerks until just today which makes this whole thing suspicious.Â
Hell I met the band and had pretty long conversations with some of the members. All of them were extremely friendly and nice. I have pictures of myself with them as proof that I actually met them ânâ stuff if you wanna see those.
Personally I really doubt the Protomen are shitty people, and the claims against them are either total bullshit or greatly exaggerated.
Iâm not about to start screenshotting texts or facebook chats, but myself and other people can confirm that everything she said is true, there are plenty of people reblogging the original post and adding their story. Itâs hard to get the courage to talk about that shit, and Alanna bringing it up has given a lot of people an opportunity.
Honestly I was very hesitant to write about their shitty behavior because of people not believing but it is real. and it is serious. The Protomen were my favorite band for so long i felt so honored that they started talking to me when they did. They tried several times to take advantage of that and I have several screenshots that prove it too (for those who demand to see it in writing). I had seen them only a few times live and it wasnt until Warped last summer that i realized how shitty their behavior really is. Just watching them try and use other young female fans was so disgusting and heartbreaking for me I didnt want to believe it. but its the truth. They do this shit more then many people know and im so happy that the truth is coming out about them.Â
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Everyone in the band the Protomen has long term girlfriends and they all love to cheat on their girlfriends with fans, several of them are abusers and liars and manipulators, stay away from them, especially at conventions where they try to get you drunk. They donât care if their targets are underage either. If theyâre hooking up with you and acting romantic, which I know they are with several people on this website, theyâre toying with you and they all have girlfriends back in Nashville who have no idea. They just do it for an ego boost and really donât care if they hurt anyone in the process.Â
Especially Murphy Weller, Turbo Lover, and Reanimator. So donât fall for it.

I trust Alanna for that reason, and for the reason I previously put in a tag but will just flat out state; Murphy has behaved very creepily to me, has hit on me and been really handsy to me. Â I have personally experienced at least one of these men being a creep so the rest doesnât surprise me.

seriously yâall. this is the truth. Their music is cool and they seem cool when you first meet them but then they get really creepy. M and R started talking to me on tumblr a few years ago (i was 17 and they knew that) and they would say really inappropriate and nasty things. I didnt think much of it cause i was such a fan i was just kind of shocked they talked to me in the first place but it got out of hand and they think they can do whatever they want and be such creeps and its not ok. Alanna was brave enough to talk about it and im backing her up 100%. These guys really will try and get you drunk and do nasty things. I have several saved messages and snapchats from Murphy that will shock even the biggest fans. Please dont project any sort of hate onto any of the people coming out about this this is very serious and I dont want to see any other young fans be taken advantage of.
Protomen controversy act II
The two ways I see this controversy turning out: 1. This Alanna person wants to destroy the cis white protomen from the south, and it isnât working. Theyâre a good band and weâll let the whole thing go, so long as we get act III. 2. TL and some others did actually do something that we have no details of, and weâll let the whole thing go. So long as we get act III.
I wonât take a stance. Thatâs the best thing we can do.

So look I ainât starting shit and I ainât arguing with anybody about this on here full stop but
I can vouch from experience that most of what Alanna wrote is true (the other stuff I canât because I donât have personal experience but have no reason to doubt her).
I never said anything about certain band membersâ proclivities at conventions because, well to be honest, I thought it was well established. The way Alannaâs post blew up now I see that was not the case.
Iâm not dragging out names, I donât care who wants receipts Iâm not bringing her into this mess, but for a while I was close with someone who ended up in a sorta relationship with one of the guys, only to find out he had a long term girlfriend back home, and my friend ended up being harassed and slut-shamed for it.
I still like the band. Love the music. Are some of the members shitty about getting laid? Yes. Are some of them dutifully married with families who mostly keep to themselves and donât fuck around at cons? Yes. Do they monitor their fanâs social media presence and ridicule things made about them? Yes, and this has been known since the days long before âbrotomenâ was ever a coined term. Do what you want with that information.
And like Iâve been saying for a while now, donât put people you donât personally know on pedestals. They are always going to disappoint.
