JAKE:
Jake startled awake, pushing away and scrambling to pull himself into a seated position. Once he noticed who it was who had woken him, he settled somewhat. Still, he gave a sour face at being woken up. Didn’t get much sleep these days.
“Y..yeah? How long was I out?” He was hoping hours, but not too many. He had no idea if it was night or morning or what-have-you.
"Shit-” him jumping made her jump too, tapping the old back of the couch and rocking on the balls of her feet, “Sorry... You okay?”
She pats his shoulder, "-About three hours. C’mon, Jake, hate to make you move so soon but we gotta get out of here. Isn’t safe to be hunkering down in a hot zone even if it’s real quiet in the area.”
book silently read a story with them.

❝ If your mother asks we went out to eat and- ❞
❝ -and a we saw a movie. ❞
❝ Sure. Yes, I mean. We saw a movie. ❞
They didn’t have much time, weeks or maybe even days. His office has been stripped of the essentials slowly. Picking scraps from such a large body of research like some vulture, taking only enough that it wouldn’t turn heads. A book here, a box there. Sometimes it was a sample destined for a microscope he’d slide up the sleeve of his coat. Bits and pieces of all his life had amounted to. He was supposed to take Sherry out, buy her dinner then maybe a movie; like so many of her parents' promises that too was not to be. Instead, Sherry Birkin helps her father box books, marking the vast tomes within his corporate office and tossing anything labeled ‘1997’ or newer into the cardboard box set up in the middle. It’s numbing work; the pile grows heavy.
The Birkin’s are, by all accounts, criminals, murderers and thieves. William plays negotiator- seeks asylum with men whose greed masked as patriotism find his research to be worth more than their morals.
But he wasn’t out, yet. It would all come together soon but he just needed more time. Maybe a week to gather his things, maybe less. Were he to rouse Umbrella’s suspicion it would doom him to death- doom his family to worse.
William’s back is turned to his daughter as he shuffles through cabinets of manila folders with a practised hand. Study after study, experiment after experiment would all have to be left behind. So much progress attributed to two decades of HIS work, soon to be sold, all for...what? Family? Predictably the answer he would give suggests not. The woman who sleeps on the other side of his bed at night is his co-worker. The girl helping him sort his research well past her bedtime feels like a stranger, at times.
Yet…
❝ Dad, what do we do with this one? ❞
Curiously, Sherry procures a blue three-ringed binder from his shelf. It was worn- well used but not decrepit. She holds onto it for a moment, eyes brightened by the discovery (a small outlier among the monotony of medical journals or textbooks). William stares at it, pulling his reading glasses down to rest at the tip of his nose though to better examine her findings.
❝ What the devil…. ❞ trailing off, he closes the distance between them with a few brisk strides. ❝ I am… I am not quite sure. Could have been field notes that maybe that got lost in the rabble. Let me see. ❞
Upon opening it no field notes nor college scrawlings met him as he would have predicted but instead a face- HIS face, to be more exact. Polaroid pictures tapped together with markings of journals- writings in such terrible handwriting it could only be his. A few dates stand out, dog tagged among the faded photos: 1978, 1977, 1980. Turning the page reveals only more. There’s a pause that hangs between, a silence that hinges on an unwanted discovery. Sherry, normally so polite, seems to take interest and stretches on tiptoes to stare at what had left her father perplexed.
❝ Is that...is that you with the mustache? ❞
❝ I...A project from a younger time. I kept bits of my personal work and photos of us nearly two decades ago. Reckon I hadn’t wanted to lose parts of us all- Albert, your mother, myself. Not sentimental, but to persevere. ❞ He kneels to match her height with the faintest hints of a smile; it looks alien on his face. ❝ The seventies were a different time, and it worked on your mother. Not a word on the mustache- you owe it your existence and Albert...Gods above that turtle neck was horrid- look at him. He looks like an eldritch tortoise, doesn’t he? ❞
How long had it been since he’d heard his child laugh? Weeks, months, or perhaps it is years? Maybe it is a deeper failing that he can not remember. Yet Sherry Birkin laughs, and that cowards smirk is brought to a full grin. She turns the pages in the book he holds, unveiling more snippets of an older chapter. Albert Wesker scowling as a seventeen year old William Birkin locked an arm around his neck. A small group of young researchers holding a badge presented by one such James Marcus. There are pages there, too, with words hastily scribbled in faded black ink. Sherry point’s to a subset of photos grouped together, and at each notion of inquiry he would explain.
❝ Henry Montauk. Biologist I worked with before your mother. We dated briefly. Don’t know where he is now. That there- that’s 1981, no? I bought a Pontiac after a substantial raise. Bit of an impulse buy but i’d park it in Al’s spot from time to time. It would drive him up a wall, I think.❞
❝ Is that mom? ❞
The woman is almost unrecognizable. Smiling a smile that was not forced, before the dark circles had become permanent fixtures under her eyes. Before her brows were always furrowed in concern. How different they had both been, then. When the horizon had felt so bright.
❝ Same year we were married, yes. Right after we bought the house if memory serves right. Because you had just... ❞ his voice trails with his eyes. There he was, holding the bundle of cells and flesh all wrapped up beneath a blanket, twelve years ago. This one is blurred and smudged worse than the rest, though the practiced eye might deduce that William Birkin, in that snapshot of history, had tears streaming quite unashamed down his cheeks. The writing beneath the pinned picture is bold in contrast: “ My greatest creation !! ”
His greatest.
Quickly, he clears his throat and stands as if ripped back to the now. He had a purpose, a thing to do- no time to get sidetracked nor look upon what was; there was no point, either. But he’d seen it, and she had too, and now there was a feeling in his gut brought about by the constricting talons of uncertainty. Doubt, discomfort and anxiety all blending into a very familiar chemical cocktail that sees his jaw tighten.
She continues to examine silently as he sorts files and books. It was quite the task to decode the hieroglyphs of his writing; at least it kept her enthralled enough not to notice the grimness of her father’s demeanor. Only an hour later would he break the silence, sealing away the last of his work into cardboard; hopefully it would be the last time he’d set foot in his office above ground.
❝ Sherry, why don’t you hold onto that for me? Maybe you could add a few of your own pages once we move, no? ❞
Sherry

On the Mechanics of the G-Virus (Golgotha)
1. Implantation of virus through a “G Embryo”, a packet of infected and adaptable tissues, exposure to infected biomass, or a direct injection 2. Global bodily infection in 1-3 hours unless DEVIL is administered to dissolve infected tissues and vaccinate the host 3. Dissemination through the body via attachment to the spinal cord by the G Embryo
Origin The G-Virus was created through the torture and experimentation on Lisa Trevor by William Birkin and Annette Birkin. Golgotha came about when Lisa’s body obliterated Progenitor strains and her body adapted the loose RNA transcriptions into its own genetic structures, which destroyed her body and mind. I can not stress enough that Lisa was tortured by the research team. After Lisa had “outlived her usefulness”, plans were made to eliminate her. This proved almost impossible due to the virus.
William Birkin took the G-Virus and T-Virus to continue research and experimentation in the recently constructed NEST, below Raccoon City and beside its power plant. After some time, Albert Wesker planned to leave Umbrella, prompting William to do the same by stabbing Umbrella in the back. William entered talks with the US Government, intending to offer to sell Golgotha research for asylum.
However, Birkin’s actions were noticed by Spencer and Umbrella’s paramilitary, the USS, was called to take the Doctor into custody. The USS instead shot Dr. Birkin, who injected himself with Golgotha before he expired. William then began to mutated uncontrollably, and infect those around him. Those without compatible genetic structures died and became G-Mutants. During this rampage, William infected Sherry with a G embryo. Sherry Birkin was then treated for the infection with DEVIL.

Time Traveler Sherry Birkin goes back in time to try and face her fears. (x)
Sherry whats a dab- whats that mean? Im a Cool Hip dad I need to be in the know.
"I think it’s a pretty flat fish...”
leap
having that weird dream you become your father again.
Dad:
What happened to dad, she asks. Well what was Will to say? That he’d destroyed their chances of asylum all on the pin point of pride? That in the moment Delta team had squared him down, in his own lab, he thought himself righteous in drawing the sidearm (which had never once been used) in some poor mockery of Albert’s antics? That as he lay, dying, his thoughts had not drifted to the family framed on his desk but to the brief case that masked man would pluck from his corpse; his life’s work, stolen. Does he tell his weeping daughter he put his own vendetta before her safety?
❝ Misss….take.❞
Of course she knows it was a mistake. Look at you- you are crying harder than she is.
❝ I don’t- time. We need….GO.❞
You are the smartest mind in Umbrella and you can’t find the brainpower to speak? Come ON WILL.
Irons is, by some stroke of irony, the second thing that grounds him. William’s head turns only slightly to stare at the twitching, frothing body he’d mutilated. The anger that fills him could have set his blood to boil. It is an indescribable thing that burns hotter than the panic, brighter than the pain; pure divine fury which sees him choke down a bestial roar.
That’s it. Hold onto that. Protect her.
Dragging himself closer William reaches to her with the hand that is still his. Slow, though in some assurance he would not harm her. His fingers (the nails have long since turned purple and there is a coldness to his flesh that mimics death) seek to curl around her own.
That terrible monster takes his daughter’s hand and gives it a small squeeze. It is a promise, though to tell Sherry what his broken jaw made impossible to vocalize. Even if it were only for an hour, her dad was still there.
❝ Where is…. your friend?❞
She wishes Claire were here- neither of her parents were god-believing folk enough to pray, and they never imparted on her even the idea of anything that could alter fate, space, time... but she could bank on a wish. She wished Claire were here because she wouldn’t be petrified enough to freeze like a prey animal while a wet, clammy hand took her own. It looked dead. These things bite you or scratch you and you turn, right?
She’d have nightmares about it for years.
She doesn’t move because everything refused to move- he yells that they have to go and she feels that visceral anxiety felt when Annette would wash a dish angrily, or when she was awake when she wasn’t supposed to be, listening for specific footstep patterns on their home steps.
Claire would beat the shit out of it. Claire nearly got shot for her, and went after Captain Irons even after he took her. Claire would beat the shit out of or run like hell. Sherry bit the side of her cheek to keep from screaming and succeeded on steeling herself enough to put her shaky feet under her.
“... a.... An accident- wh... you’re...”
The massive monster blinked at her, swollen and angry. Its eye was glowing ferociously under the bad florescents. It was staring at her. She slips her hand out of his, inching around Iron’s seizing corpse. Blood and foam sputtered out of his mouth and he slapped the wood flooring with vicious throes.
His heavy flailing was enough excuse for her to run to the other side of the room.
Her father had slaughtered him.
“You’re a monster! You just... disappeared.”
The last thing she had of them before this was her mother’s voice over their home phone reminding her to call the police- there’s food in the fridge.
There wasn’t much food in the fridge in the first place. School was canceled the morning after that message, so she didn’t go. She didn’t go out when the television warnings began to circulate. She didn’t see her parents for a week. Cried about it then.
Panicked about it now.
“Don’t... don’t come any closer!”
There’s something that Irons’s frothing and violent body slams against, and it catches her eye. A door in the floor. Maybe it’s a basement.
She wishes Claire was here.
Dad
He is not sure which is louder; the writhing of Chief Irons’ soon-to-be corpse or his own terrible, shifting form. Each breath Birkin draws further cracks his ribs- pulls at his pulsating flesh till sickly tears and rends split his skin apart. From each wound a new growth, BREAKING his body to conform to this cancer which had seized him. Gods he wishes to scream, but his sobbing is lost to a snarl and from his bloodied mouth comes nothing but a ghoulish groan. Thick, brackish drool spills down the corner of his lips.
The pain was unimaginable. Soon, please, please PLEASE soon let something bless him with death. A presence tugs at his psyche- controlling- makes the man nothing but a parasite to his own body. William battles with it, knowing this to be a losing fight; it terrifies him. That girl (CREATURE, FLESH) near weeping behind Iron’s desk? His? Yes, most definitely his. It is why he has come (A FEAST, to rip, tear and MANGLE). Ironic that is most beloved creation sought to dismantle his most neglected.
Oh no you don’t.
To rip his mind back is in an effort which is nothing but herculean. There isn’t much time, maybe a fistful of minutes- an hour, were the powers that be forgiving. Dropping to one knee he tore the desk aside, planting his clawed talon into the ground though to pacify it.
Through it all, his heart breaks. A poor father as he was, he’d never wished- WOULD NOT be a thing of his own child’s nightmares.
❝ Sher…eey.❞
Speak to her, damn it. Move your mouth. Get her OUT.
❝ We need to go…now. ❞
The woman’s corpse on the table was in the preservation process, and stinks foul of formaldehyde as it tumbles, limbs over limp limbs off the edge. She must’ve been given something to stave off rigor mortis- Sherry’s thoughts were the ones of a quiet girl that knew too much about too much, and regurgitated too much as she shook like a leaf in place. The hellish noises behind her- she didn’t even want to look.
Irons was dead. She knew that much from the crunching noises of his body, curled up behind the toppled table and praying that nothing would see her so she could bolt at the next opportunity she had.
“Oh god, please no more.”
It didn’t stop, though the sounds lessened with a heavy, heavy thunk and Iron’s mangled, foaming face rolling to watch her behind the table. She yelped, jumped, ran three steps back and tripped on a bottle that had fallen to the floor.
You’re not supposed to think about death at twelve. She knows this, but she also knows that it’s going to be now that she dies. She doesn’t want to, but there’s no real choice in the matter. Putting her hands over her face and crying means nothing to these monsters, so she doesn’t, holding her knees a little closer and looking up at the towering lug of flesh that-...
Oh god it’s him... and he’s speaking. The tears come again and she wishes she weren’t devolving into crying every five seconds.
“Dad...?” Oh god what happened to him?! “... Daddy what... what happened to you?!”
It’s so quiet and strained at first. Her voice comes out in squeaks and she doesn’t move. Her father’s entire body was pushing outwards and breaking in front of her eyes.
claire:
claire suspected it might have concerned golgotha even before sherry picked up the phone. of the remaining figures in sherry’s life, claire had been the one to see her infection, her progression, and finally her “cure” with the antiviral, DEVIL. and in the subsequent years, sherry’s filled her in on the rest; the changes that the virus made to her body, on a cellular level, were beyond anything that claire could ever hope to fully understand. but she knows what it did. and what was done to study it. the experiments, the tests, all of it.
“ no, please – don’t worry about that. you didn’t wake me up.”
a lie that sherry maybe sees right through, but claire doesn’t care. she leans forward, phone gripped to her ear in one hand as she moves through the apartment to the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of water.
“ thirty minutes? sherry, you have me for the whole entire night if you need.”
she takes a sip, allowing the liquid to coat the back of her throat in anticipation for sherry’s words. she’s always worried too much about her, and no amount of tests, however numerous or invasive, could ever explain to sherry what exactly was going on with her body. sherry was the first and only patient to become infected with g and survive it. claire understands how she feels. ever since her infection with phobos, her daily life felt strapped to a ticking time bomb. and yet the lack of research on the virus left many researchers stumped as to what the it was actually doing to the inside of her body on a physiological level – leaving much of it either misunderstood, or simply not understood at all. she balances a fine line between living life as normal and dying suddenly of an adrenaline spike. and that’s if she’s one of the lucky ones.
“ i know, sherry…. “
she pauses for a moment, her voice ever soft, ever assuring.
“ hey, listen. i think, above everything, you’ve always gotta go with your gut feeling. you’ve been dreaming of raccoon for a reason. especially if what you’re seeing is raccoon city now, then it has to mean something. one hundred percent.”
claire doesn’t like the implications of the premonition. but sherry needs to go, and claire’s not letting her go alone.
“ i think you should go. but i’ll be right there with you.”
Claire lies through the exhaustion- she can hear it over the phone with the knife edge of anxiety for her well being. She's a strange mix of a maternal figure and best friend. Claire's been there from the start of all of this, and...
It was hard to explain exactly what she was feeling right now. A drive? A push? Something in her head pulling like a well hooked fish. She kept looking at articles about Raccoon (and every one of them was wrong). There were countless conspiracy theories and papers written, and not a single person could really capture what happened there. Even today, the details were still muddy. Worse, the memories from when she was twelve were rapidly fading.
She didn't want to forget just yet- not when she was a somnibulist trying to find answers on this topic. She'd tried writing it down once or twice, but her recall wasn't fantastic, and only gave the barest minimum of detail. Her father died. Her mother died. Both of them died or were already dead in front of her.
"I know you'd stay up if I asked. I just..." she looks at the microwave's digital clock, "It really is late, Claire."
And they both needed to sleep. God help them if they actually got it. Claire pauses, and Sherry feels her expression fold into a dozen frown lines.
"You think? Claire I... don't know. You got me out of there the first time, but we barely made it. What if there really is something there? Sure, I'd feel better if you came along but I'd also feel like..."
I was dragging you to Hell again.
"We can go together, if you're really up to it. Just please tell Chris and Jill."
Leon:
the tiny cafe huddled despondent among the huge city buildings . washed out under the overcast sky , it hunched in itself , fighting against the drizzle . hundreds of people rushed by it , outside on the crowded street . leon glanced up as the door swung open , heralded by a blast of cold wind . the interior of the cafe was warm and cheery , with bright lights that adorned the colorful walls . his eyes flicker up to the figure standing in front of him – sherry . someone familiar . family . ❝ hey . i ordered us some tea … how’ve you been , kid ? ❞
The place was a sweet spot in historic downtown, a long section of building divided into a mom and pop shop that was flooded with folks come the bite of winter. Decorations lined the streets- huge plastic trees and lights. Turn of the season meant more shoppers in the area, which meant more appreciating foot traffic in her favorite spots. The cafe was one such spot..
She pushed the door open and the smell of coffee leaked out with a familiar voice.
“Leon- hey!”
A few dozen years in isolation earned him a hug at the very least. She snags him in one before the door closed, her jacket damp with fog condensation. She hasn’t seen him in years.
“Oh god, thanks- I’m sorry I’m a little late, I park in the community outside and it’s just a longer walk. I’ve been busy- It’s really good to see you!”
She even had a list prepared of what she could start with, settling into a spot he leads them to..
